20th – Last Day of Term for 2024!
Dear CNPS families,
It is getting to that time of the term, where we can’t believe there are only a few weeks left! Teachers are working hard on reports, and we look forward to sharing some plans for our end of year celebrations and activities. Teachers will email you in due course with more details, and we will add events to the Sentral parent calendar, as well as our usual diary dates in the weekly newsletters.
Next week, we are excited to welcome our new Preps for 2025, as they have their first transition session on Tuesday. Miss Else and Nicole have been visiting the students at Kinder as well, so we are keen to get to know them better over the next 4 weeks.
MASKS
We have lots of boxes of face masks (mix of adult and kid sizes) left over from our Covid allocation. Please come and grab some from outside my office, if you like.
WORKING BEE NEXT SUNDAY 24TH
Last Working Bee for 2024! A bit of weeding and general tidying up. Would love to see some new faces, if you can make it. A huge thank you and acknowledgement to our working bee stalwarts – a core group of about 10 parents who are here every time. You are amazing. Nicole T will provide a list of jobs in next Friday’s newsletter.
LUNCHTIME CLUBS
A couple of happy snaps from lunchtime in the Library today. A reminder, if your child is struggling in the longer lunchtime break, with either social overwhelm, or just wanting to get out of the heat; we hold lunchtime options each week:
MONDAYS – Board Games with Sarah (and occasional Chess Club with me)
TUESDAYS – Choir with Nicci
WEDNESDAYS and THURSDAYS – Library with Carly (students can read/draw/play cards or board games).
FRIDAYS – Lego with Nicole W in the Library
GRADE 3/4 HEALTHY WATERWAYS EXCURSION
Your Grade 3/4 child may come home with a tale about waiting for a missing bus today! We booked 2 buses for our excursion to Chewton (90+ students), but only one bus turned up, for the pickup and the drop off! So, half of the crew needed to wait around for the bus to do a return trip! I have heard that it was a great excursion, though. Thanks to Louise, Nicci, Jesse, Luke and Ash for their assistance today.
Have a great weekend,
Sam C
OVERDUE LIBRARY BOOKS
There are several student's that have overdue library books, please return them to the school library as soon as possible.
Thank you
Angela
BOOK CLUB
Student book club orders are due Monday 25th November. This is the last book club for the year.
Hello from the Prep Rooms!
This week in Literacy we have been reading words with our new sounds ‘-y’ and ‘ie’. During reading, we have been focusing on reading automatically, without the need to sound out each word, to improve our fluency. We enjoyed writing our Cold Writes, on the topic ‘Lost’ and were proud to demonstrate the improvement in our independent writing. Students wrote their final Cold Write narrative on the topic ‘lost’. After completing their story students then used a red pencil to edit their writing looking to correct capital letters, ensure it makes sense, include punctuation and finger spaces. We introduced the Maths ‘Minute Challenge’. Students were given a minute each day to write as many numbers 1-10 accurately with correct formation. Each day their personal challenge is to write more numbers accurately than the day before.
A highlight of our week was our swimming lesson, and we were impressed with the brave way students participated, even when feeling nervous. Thank you so much to our parent helpers who not only helped supervise walking to and from the indoor pool, but who also helped manage the chaos that is the changeroom! A big thank you to Carly for organising these free lessons for the students. Everyone is excited for the next session.
Next week, we will be learning one new code ‘oa’. We will continue working on writing in our dotted thirds books and growing in confidence with editing. In Maths we will continue reviewing numbers through our maths rotations. For STEAM we will begin using the coding mice, which gives students the opportunity to learn basic coding, using directions to control the movements of the mice.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Lauren and Nicole.
Hello from the Golden Wattle Building,
Over the last few weeks in Literacy, we’ve read and explored the features of narratives by looking at characters, settings and the structure a good story uses to draw the reader in. We used this knowledge when writing our own narratives and practiced editing and uplevelling our story to make it more interesting. On Friday we showed our creativity, our punctuation and handwriting skills when writing amazing stories about ‘The Incredible Freedom Machine’ during our Cold Write.
This week in Maths we have been exploring the connection between addition and subtraction. We have been learning how to solve simple addition and subtraction problems using a range of efficient mental and written strategies. Using number lines to solve problems has been a big focus for the students this week.
As part of our BQT ‘Where does energy come from?’, we have been investigating forces that pull. We looked at how gravity and friction affect objects that are pushed or pulled. We enjoyed conducting experiments with toy cars, seeds and turtles to find out more about how things move.
Last Friday our 1/2 classes had a fantastic time at Kickball. They showed enthusiasm and great teamwork as they played against the other schools. Thank you to the parents who assisted us on the day. We were all very excited to begin the first of our swimming lessons today. This will continue over the next few weeks so please make sure your child has their swimming bag on Fridays with a towel and bathers and ensure all items of clothing are named. A special thank you to Carly for organising the Kickball event, our swimming program and for getting in the water to help us with our swimming skills!
Next week we will begin learning about the features and structure of a Procedural text, exploring Chance in Maths and investigating where energy comes from in our BQT lessons. We will wrap up our Star of the Week program and continue our swimming lessons on Friday.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Sally, Wendy, Sarah and Bec
Greetings from the grade 3/4 team. We hope everyone enjoyed a restful long weekend between weeks 4 and 5. Returning to school, our 3/4s dove into exciting new focuses across a range of subjects, bringing fresh energy and curiosity into our classrooms.
In literacy, we’ve embarked on the thrilling adventure of Treasure Island by Robert Louis Stevenson, diving into a world of pirates, treasure maps, and high-seas excitement. The students are diving into the classic tale of seafaring, treasure maps, and cunning characters. Through this story, we're exploring storytelling techniques, descriptive language, and the elements of an adventure. We’ve been using our ‘show-not-tell' approach to produce some interesting sentences and to uplevel basic sentences.
As the darkness closed in, my hands started to tremble. Should I go back or continue? I felt a drop of something on my head. I looked at it. I started running for my life, my heart was racing like a cheetah!
- Mitchell, Grade 3
When I heard what the pirate said, my heart started pounding so loudly that I was sure they would hear it. My hands were shaking uncontrollably, my feet went cold, and my face was dripping with sweat.
- Mary, Grade 4
There’s nothing like a tale of hidden treasure to spark curiosity and ignite imagination! The classroom fills with quiet anticipation as we dive into new parts of the story each day.
In maths, we're continuing to review some concepts we looked at earlier in the year: fractions and decimals. Our students have been exploring improper fractions and learning how to convert between mixed numerals and improper fractions. We’ve also looked deeper in equivalent fractions. It’s been rewarding to see their confidence grow as they tackle these challenges.
A popular game we've been playing frequently is Colour-in Fractions. In this activity, students roll dice to determine a fraction, then colour in that fraction—or an equivalent fraction—on a game sheet. This game helps reinforce their understanding of equivalent fractions in a hands-on way.
On Monday 11 November we also took some time to observe Remembrance Day. Our class came together to honour those who have served, and this led to some heartfelt discussions about students' own family connections to Australia’s recent history. Many shared stories of family members who served in past conflicts, adding a personal dimension to our reflections and helping students connect with Australia’s legacy of service and sacrifice.
Until next time,
Hannah, Louise, Mr Scott, Claire and Nicci
Since our last newsletter, we have been busy indeed. In Maths, we have explored volume by constructing popcorn containers with paper and considering the volume of different prisms made with an A4 page. We found out about the properties of supplementary, complementary angles and angles around a point, using this knowledge to solve problems involving missing angles. In Literacy, we have continued to read Wonder; now exploring Justin’s perspective and reflecting on the Pullmans as a family unit. In Word Study, we began to look at the ceed-cede-cess morpheme, which means “go”. In BQT we continued our deep dive into natural disasters, focusing on tsunamis, erosion and weathering. We had a go at observing how water and air can weather rock under certain conditions.
Next week, Wonder will take us back to Auggie’s perspective and tackle some big (and sad) life events. In Maths, we will look at how data can be used to mislead or tell a story.
Have a lovely weekend.
Jay, Sam K, Liz, Hannah, Mr Higgins and Giovanna.
