NEW STUDENTS
Welcome to Bella and Jasmine, and their Mum Michaela, who are joining us from Bendigo. They are in Grade 1 and 5; we hope you have enjoyed your first week at CNPS!
SUN SMART REMINDERS
It is great to see most students wearing their CNPS hats for playtimes and P.E. sessions. A reminder, that you can purchase a new hat for your child (online) while we await the re-opening of Beleza in Castlemaine. Another reminder, to please support our uniform and SunSmart policies, by making sure your child is wearing shorts/skirts/dresses that are as close to knee length as possible, please. I would appreciate your support with this. The uniform policy also states that students are to wear navy/black “bottom half” uniform items. Thanks.
BIKE ED AND SWIMMING
Thanks to Carly, Ash, and Belinda (and the parent helpers from last week) for getting the Bike Ed sessions off to a great start. Thanks also to the helpers for the Prep-2 swimming sessions. We rely on the extra supervision and assistance for these programs to go ahead, so the support is appreciated. Thank you, Carly, for organising the swimming schedule for our junior team.
WORKING BEE THIS SUNDAY
A reminder – last Working Bee for the year, this Sunday – 9am. See further information from Nicole in this newsletter.
Have a great weekend,

2025 School Captains
The term is flying by, and we have some exciting news for 2025! The Grade 5 students were given the opportunity to run for School Captain while our current Grade 6 students were away at camp. We set a new record for the number of students who showed courage and passion by running for the four School Captain roles.
On the Friday of Week 3, each candidate presented their speech to an audience of Grade 3, 4, and 5 students. Some amazing ideas were shared, and great persuasive techniques were embedded in the presentations. After voting took place and the results were collected, it was a close call among all the candidates. But alas, there can only be four!
A big congratulations to our 2025 School Captains:
From left to right: Jasmine Robinson, Lula Tigges, Adelaide Gardiner and Remy Vellacott
We look forward to seeing you shine as leaders and role models within our school community.
Hello from the Prep Rooms!
This week in Literacy we have been reading words with our new sound ‘oa’ of boat. We finished our class novel ‘The Wizard of Oz’ and completed a book review with our favourite character and their journey throughout the book. In writing on focus has been writing in our dotted thirds books. This is challenging as we have to remember which lines to use for the different letters. We are becoming more confident every day! We have also been learning how to edit sentences using our ‘red editing pencils’ and fixing up capital letters, spaces between words, making sure it makes sense and including punctuation. In Maths, we have continued our 1-minute challenges and have been practising quick addition, subtraction, doubling numbers, numbers to 50 and pairs to 10 through different maths games/activities each day. For our STEAM Monday challenge, we learnt how to use the ‘code and go’ mice to get the mouse to move to reach the cheese. We even added a challenge of going through a tunnel. After a few hot days in a row, we were excited to go to our second swimming lesson. Thank you to parent helpers who supervised walking to and from the pool.
Next week in Literacy we will continue revising all the sounds we have learnt this year. We will continue writing in our dotted third books and getting new books to read. In Maths we will continue revising addition facts, subtraction facts, ordering numbers and continuing number patterns. In STEAM we will continue using the ‘code and go’ and learning how to code the mice accurately to reach different destinations.
Have a wonderful weekend!
Lauren and Nicole
Another lovely week in the sunshine for the 1/2 classes. After finishing our magnificent stories last week we’ve moved our literacy focus to procedural writing. We’ve learnt about the structure of a procedure and how to write the steps out in a clear way. This fits in perfectly with our inquiry into ‘where does energy come from?’ as we undertake different experiments to learn about forces and energy. This week we explored water resistance and magnetic energy. So much fun!
In Maths we used stories and games to learn about statistics and probability. A favourite game we played is ‘corners’; possibly not one you can play at home as you need a large group, but maybe your child can explain how it works. We looked at recording and graphing our data and then analysing what we found out.
1/2SB enjoyed their last session in the garden with the much-anticipated pizza cooking. If you need some help in the kitchen then these are the kids to ask! They expertly rolled out the dough, placed on the ingredients and then made sure each piece was gobbled up with no chance to get cold. Thankyou to our parent helpers Max, Gabe, Lara, Lori and Jodi for coming along to help us in the garden over the last few weeks.
Next week we will start our advent calendars in Maths, continue with procedural writing in literacy and learn about solar and wind power in BQT.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Sarah, Sally, Bec and Wendy
Hello from the Grade 3/4s!
This week in Literacy, we’ve continued our exploration of Treasure Island. We’ve enjoyed reading the story together as a class and delving into the author’s intent, discussing the themes and reasons behind the choices he made. We have also continued to develop our ability to write descriptive passages that ‘Show, Not Tell’ and expand our sentences to include more detail.
3/4CN embraced the Treasure Island theme for their STEAM Challenge, where the task was to design a pirate hat that could conceal the most treasure! Working in pairs, students were judged on three criteria:
Whether their hat could pass as a convincing pirate hat
How many blocks of treasure they could hide inside
How well the treasure was concealed
The stakes were high—fail the challenge, and you might just be forced to walk the plank!
In Maths we have been focusing on money, including adding coins and notes, calculating change by adding up and determining the best financial deals. See if you can work out which of these two deals are better: 6 cans of pet food for $7.20 or 15 cans for $21. Extra points if you can work out the unit price and how much it would cost for 20 cans!
Students have also enjoyed Bike Ed for the second week. A reminder that this will continue for the next two weeks, so please make sure students come to school with their bikes and helmets on their usual P.E. day.
Enjoy your weekend,
Louise, Hannah, Mr Scott, Claire and Nicci
Our week in Grades Five and Six
In the grade 5\6 classrooms this week we have been working incredibly hard on oiur novel study Wonder, maths, and of course softball practice. In our Wonder lessons we have been looking at the character growth in different characters and how they evolve thanks to the people and situations they must face. In Maths we have been focusing on misleading information and making graphs to trick our parents into giving us more pocket money (not literary). In Science, we looked at the impact weathering can have on rocks.
Next week, we are very excited and incredibly busy with gingerbread, the final wonder lessons and (maybe) watching the movie, doing experiments that will help us understand how to stop/slow erosion and landslides, the grade 6s Wigus (When I Grow Up) videos, Grade 5s buddy bags, the teacher chase, softball and so much more fun!

Here is an example of the incredible writing students have been completing during their novel study.
The following paragraph may not be suitable to read to younger audiences.
What Role Does Daisy’s Death Play in the Novel?
In the novel, Daisy’s death causes the Pullman family to forget their arguments and problems and August realizes he’s not the center of attention. In a blog post, Palacio explains that this is a “real growing up moment for August.” In other words, August experiencing losing something he truly loves and it’s not just about him. In the novel, when Daisy dies, August says “I’ve never seen Dad cry before, but I saw him cry tonight.: (page 225). This moment shows August empathising with his dad after the tragic loss of their dog, Daisy. By including Daisy’s death in the novel, something happens to the Pullman family that was more important than most of their other problems. Through this scene, August has grown up and felt empathy for others in his family.
