Dear CNPS families,
A big week, with Student-Led conferences on Wednesday afternoon/evening; thank you to the teachers for preparing the students, and to our amazing students for sharing their work so eloquently with their parent/s. We also had the Grade 5/6 students heading to Bendigo, for a visit to the Art Gallery. Thanks to Hannah V for organising this, and to the parent helpers that came along. The upcoming week is busy too, with the Grade 3-6 students at District sport next Friday (cricket and tennis) and the Prep-2 students are off to Bendigo for a Performing Arts excursion. Thank you Carly and Nicci for your organisation of these events. Please make sure your payments and forms are back for these events ASAP.
MOBILE PHONE POLICY
A reminder, that all Victorian government schools share a policy around the use of devices at school. Mobile phones/devices are to be invisible and silent at school. We have had instances where student phones are “pinging” from their bags, and more concerningly, students messaging their parents from their smart watch (for example, that they are feeling unwell). I have spoken to the Gr 5/6 students today and told them that the teachers are the people who communicate with parents. Smart watches are to be in school mode for the duration of the day. Can you please reinforce this message at home? Thank you.
UPCOMING EVENTS
Our community is holding a young writers festival in October, a fashion parade in September, and there will be a school holiday Art program happening in our district for the September/October break. Please check out the Community Noticeboard section of the newsletters to see what is on!

Do you know of anyone who would be interested in becoming a crossing supervisor at some of our local school crossings?
The position requires a sensible and pragmatic approach to safety in relation to traffic, the use of Stop signs, and most importantly, the safe passage of children across some of our busy roads! It is a great opportunity to become a part of the local community as well as helping to keep our children safe.
Renumeration is based on an hourly rate, with an additional allowance for travel to and from which ever school crossing you are supervising. Training, equipment and uniform are provided.
The hours are approximately 40 minutes to an hour in the morning (depending on which school crossing you have been allocated) and roughly the same hours for the afternoon shift. Start times are from 8.10am to approximately 9.00am and the afternoon shift is 3.00pm to approximately 4.00pm.
If you, or someone you know, might be interested, please email:
j.sheldon@mountalexander.vic.gov.au and I can answer any questions and explain the role in greater detail.

Week 9 – CNPS Neurodiversity Awareness Day
Hello from the Prep Rooms,
Another busy week as we draw closer to the end of Term 3. It was lovely to see many families at our Student Led Expo on Wednesday. The students proudly shared their work from this term and enjoyed going on tours around the classrooms.
This week in Literacy the Prep students have learnt the ‘sh’ sound and have practised reading and writing words. On Wednesday students had a go at writing their first Big Write, when they wrote independently about ‘the best birthday of their life.’ It was impressive to see the students write their ideas and include finger spaces, capital letters and full stops. In Maths we have continued to revise our numbers 10 to 20 by ordering, counting, writing and making numbers. After looking at how Easter is celebrated in different countries around the world as part of this Term’s big question, our STEAM Friday Challenge was the ‘Egg Drop’. Working in small groups, students used different materials to protect their egg, and then we dropped the eggs down about 1 metre to see if they survived. Make sure to ask your child/dren if their egg survived the fall. On Friday we also went to a ‘Making Friends with Worry’ session where we learnt about worrying and what strategies we can use to help us when we have worries!
Next week, in Literacy we will be focussing on words containing the ‘ch’ sound and continuing to use ‘but and ‘because’ in our sentences. In Maths, we will focus on ordinal numbers. A highlight of the week, will be the Prep/1/2 excursion to Bendigo next Friday to see the performance ‘I Wish’. If you haven’t already, please return your permission note and money.
We hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Nicole and Lauren
I’m sure that you are just as proud of your students as we are. It was wonderful to see their smiling faces and hear their sincere words as they showed you their favourite pieces of work and helped you assess their writing and goals with them. Thank you for visiting the classrooms and sharing in this educational experience; it makes our job even more special.
So, this week, as you have seen, we worked upon fractions in maths, cutting up cookies and apples and talking about what a fraction is and what makes it fair. In our literacy studies we have been adding commas to our work while continuing to read some of the beautiful book week texts such as, The Bowerbird by Aura Parker. During Inquiry we have been looking at celebrations in our families and have designed special celebration hats.
Next week is our excursion to the theatre in Bendigo. If you haven’t returned your forms, please do.
Best wishes from
Wendy, Sarah, Sally and Bec
Greetings from the Iron Bark teachers,
They say ‘time flies when you’re having fun’ and that is exactly what’s happening in the Ironbark classrooms!
This week, students have continued their journey of going further in their inquiry cycle. Each classroom had slight variations of how the going further stage looked, depending on the students in each class. While some classes celebrated what they learned over our Australian History unit, others couldn’t ignore their persistent wonderings and questions that surfaced over the unit. They were therefore given the opportunity to delve into these wonderings a little bit deeper and conquer these wonderings once and for all. The creative and different ways students chose to showcase their learning demonstrates what we have always appreciated – we work with the most creative, talented and curious students at Castlemaine North Primary School. We had board games, quiz’s, songs, movies, dioramas, puppet shows, Interviews, battery devices that motored ships around. There are just too many to mention!
There are so many learning opportunities from inquiry learning, and it’s not just about the end product. It’s about learning the skills of being an effective researcher, the ability to work in a group where you have to negotiate, compromise and collaborate with others respectfully. You also have to plan and manage your time wisely to have the end product finished by a deadline. For some students, the most powerful learning was the journey!
On Wednesday afternoon/evening, it was lovely to see all the Parents, Carers, brothers and sisters, even grandparents check out what their children have been up to at school. From eager, excited smiles from students to family members beaming with pride, it was a joy to witness from a teacher’s perspective.
Anyway, back to business! In Maths, we have been using data and learning how to represent it by using graphs! You can check out some of our graphs in the photos.
Next week we will moving onto mass! In Literacy we will be launching into the Solar System! On Friday, wish us luck as we will be completing a science experiment using a ‘balloon rocket’. Stay tuned to see how that goes…
Also, just a reminder that students will have to start wearing their hat next week (1.9.2024) as our sun-smart policy states! Please remember, if you haven’t already, to sign and return your child’s permission slip to enable them to participate in the District Tennis and Cricket at Wesley Hill Recreational Reserve. Please remind your child to bring a water bottle, maybe some extra food, and their hat!
Week 7 done and dusted! This week in 5/6 land, we wrapped up our P4P sessions, invited parents into the classroom for our student-led expos, took a trip to the Bendigo Art Gallery, and participated in the Making Friends with Worry workshop. What a week!
A big thank you to Bron for spending the last six weeks with us at CNPS. Students have gained valuable knowledge and skills to help them navigate the big changes happening to their bodies. Bron provided a safe space for students to ask questions, reflect on potential situations, and learn effective strategies for overcoming any challenges related to puberty.
Wednesday night’s Student-Led Learning Expo was a huge success! Students took charge and brought their families into the world of a Grade 5/6 student. Thank you to everyone who attended the event. It was a busy start to the week as students prepared various activities and presentations to share. They could choose which learning areas to explore with their families and friends. We hope you left with a great insight into what your children are achieving in class—and maybe felt a little challenged by some of the activities yourselves!
Our big week continued Thursday as we braved the cold morning to catch the train to Bendigo. Hannah V planned an amazing day out for the senior students. Last term, students explored the work of local artist and CNPS parent, Rob McHaffie, by creating clay figures of a famous person of their choice. We were fortunate to follow this up with a visit to Bendigo to see Rob’s exhibition, We Are Family, at the Bendigo Art Gallery. Thank you, Hannah V, for providing our students with such a rich and exciting art program!
The week concluded on Friday with the Making Friends with Worry workshop. This fun and interactive session explored worry and anxiety among primary school-aged children. It focused on understanding and normalizing worry while providing insight into what happens in our brain and body when we feel anxious.
Next week, we’re not quite back to regular programming. On Friday, the 3/4/5/6 classes will be at Wesley Hill Recreation Reserve, participating in District Tennis and Cricket. Just a reminder to return the permission form on Monday! Giovanna will be on long service leave, and Mr. Higgins will be in 5/6HG while she is away. Thanks Mr. Higgins!
In Literacy, we will focus on building tension in narrative writing and delve into the story of our freedom through the Magna Carta. And don’t think you’re too old for dinosaurs! Some classes have already begun learning about the origins of the word dinosaur: "din" means terrible, and "saur" or "saurus" means lizard. So, dinosaurs are terrible lizards! We’ll continue exploring the vocabulary related to these fascinating creatures.
In Maths, we have started converting improper fractions to mixed numerals by multiplying, and we will transfer this knowledge to division, as well as work with percentages and decimals.
Have a great weekend!
Hannah, Jay, Liz, Mr. Higgins, Sam K, and Giovanna

The students are enjoying learning the Indigenous Literacy Foundation’s Busking for Change song, Shorty Creek. All classes across the school are learning the English version and the CNPS choir have taken on the challenge to learn the Kriol version. For the students at Burunga Remote Community School, Kriol is their common language.
We will be inviting parents and carers in for our Busking for Change performance on the afternoon of Wednesday the 18th of September. Hopefully it is a sunny day so we can perform outside or alternatively it will be in the Silver Banksia building.
If your child is keen to listen to the song and have a practise, or if you’d like to hear it (it’s pretty catchy!), please follow the YouTube link below.

The Preps started a unit in Puppetry this week. We discussed different types of puppets and had fun playing with finger puppets.
The Grade 1/2s have begun scripted drama. This week they formed their small group and chose their script. The P-2s had a focus on character voices and making them sound different to our own.
The Grade 3/4s are working on turning picture story books into scripts. Presently they are trying to include all the features of a script as they transform their books into scripts.
The Grade 5/6s are focusing on music and learning the ukulele. Over the coming weeks, they will be learning the chords to play Shorty Creek!
Nicci
Grade 5/6 had a fantastic day on Thursday visiting North School Parent & Artist Rob McHaffie’s “We are family” retrospective at the Bendigo Art Gallery. Some of us were lucky to have Rob himself talk to the students about his work and take them on a tour of his exhibition. Curator of the show and also a North School parent, Emma Busowsky guided the students through the exhibition.
First Nations learning officer, Annie Brigdale engaged the students in the ‘Power of Colour’ exhibition. Learning about the traditional ways of painting compared with the contemporary use of acrylic paint and introduction of vibrant colours. We could have spent a whole day listening to her!
Thank you to the 5/6 teachers for their expertise in train travel and excursions with 80 students. Also, a big thank you to Kathrin Ward and Steph Wright and her mum Dianne who helped on the day.
Rumah Adat Indonesian
This term the grade 5/6 students have been learning about ‘Rumah Adat Indonesia’ or traditional Indonesian housing. Students were given a chance to choose a particular housing style and work in groups to research and build a small model of this. The students have been working hard on their projects and now that they are completed, they are being displayed in a mini exhibition in the Silver Banksia building near the library space. Please feel free to come in and have a look at the student’s work and find out more about the range of housing styles across Indonesia, which reflect this very interesting and diverse culture. There is also lots of new amazing student work from the art room on display in this space too!
