Dear CNPS families,
What an epic term! Thank you for supporting the school in what was a jam packed nine weeks. We have had a fantastic time but I think everyone is ready for a little R&R! I would like to congratulate all of the students on their achievements this term. From sporting events, chess tournaments, and camps through to some incredible academic and wellbeing growth, we are so proud of every single student. Thank you also to our teachers who consistently go above and beyond to provide such high quality learning experiences for their students.
School council has approved the following Pupil Free Days in Term Four:
Monday 3rd November - Report Writing Day
Tuesday 4th November - Melbourne Cup Public Holiday
Wednesday 5th November - Curriculum Day - First Nations Perspectives in the Curriculum
This will mean that students will only be required at school on Thursday and Friday in Week 5.
I would like to wish the 15 Grade 5/6 students who will be heading off to Somers Camp in Week 1 of next term the very best of luck. Somers Camp is a great opportunity for personal growth and we're sure that it will be an experience that stays with you for the rest of your life!
School will resume on Monday the 6th of October. We will not have an assembly on the first week back of term.
Have a happy, safe and restful break everyone,
Sam Kerr
This term, I’ve been lucky enough to be working with the Grade 3 – 6 students and their teachers on our Respectful Relationships curriculum. I’ve been so impressed with the maturity, thoughtfulness and willingness to show vulnerability that has been evident during sessions.
As you’ll know from previous newsletter updates, classes across the school have been working through ‘Topic 6, Help Seeking’ this term. This topic aims to assist students to identify situations where they should seek peer or adult help, normalise help seeking behaviours and identify trusted people to seek help from. I have firsthand evidence that this teaching and learning has had an impact this term as I’ve had numerous students seek support from me (in my role as school counsellor) and reference their work in RRRR that prompted them to ask for help.
Classes have either completed or are still working through ‘Topic 7, Gender Norms and Stereotypes’. This topic helps students consider the influence of gender norms on attitudes, opportunities and behaviour, and to learn about gender equality, inclusion, human rights and the importance of relationships that respect people of all genders. Working with students on this topic makes me feel safe that the future is in good hands! I had lots of fun with the Grade 3/4s yesterday looking at traditional fairy tales and wondering why the ‘beautiful’ princesses always look the same and why they always need to be saved by the ‘handsome’ prince. We decided that if Rapunzel had spent less time brushing her hair, she could have planned her own escape!
The final topic of the year will be ‘Topic 8, Positive Gender Relations’. This topic helps students develop an age-appropriate understanding of gender-based violence, safe and unsafe behaviours and consent. Students also develop self-care, peer support and help-seeking skills they can use in response to situations involving gender-based violence.
Early next term, our staff will be working with Alana Wearne, from the Respectful Relationships team at the Department of Education. Alana has worked with us before and always leaves us feeling empowered and inspired for the next step of our RRRR journey.
Have a safe and peaceful holiday everyone!
Nicole
One of our prep students lost this tiger hat at the school production. It holds sentimental value to the family, so if you happen to see it somewhere, could you please bring it in to school at the beginning of Term Four.
Hello from the Prep Rooms,
It is hard to believe we’ve reached the end of another term, and what a busy one it has been! From writing and creating our own music video, to dressing up for Book Week, neurodiversity day, celebrating 100 Days of School, and performing in our school concert, there has been so much to enjoy. Thank you for supporting all our extra-curricular activities, wow what a term!
Our final week has once again been filled with excitement! On Tuesday, it was wonderful to see everyone proudly wearing their house colours and enjoying a fantastic time at the P–2 Athletics Day. A big thank you to Carly for organising such a successful event. On Wednesday, we walked to the Botanical Gardens with our buddies and special furry friends for a teddy bear picnic and a play on the playground, a perfect way to celebrate a wonderful term together.
In Literacy, we were introduced to the ‘ng’ sound and enjoyed reading and writing words that feature this code. We also celebrated finishing reading our class novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, by watching the movie. In Maths, we continued practising skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s and had fun creating our own skip-counting trains to show what we’ve learned.
Today, we sent home the students’ Learning Journals. Over the holidays, please take some time to look through the different work samples together and celebrate all the wonderful learning that has taken place. Please return the journals early next term so we can continue adding work throughout Term Four.
Thank you to everyone who has supported our classroom and school programs this term, we truly appreciate your help and involvement. We hope you all enjoy a wonderful holiday break and look forward to seeing students refreshed and ready for Term Four!
Nicole and Miss Else
Hello from the Golden Wattle building!
Our final week of the term has been full of wonderful learning experiences. On Tuesday we dodged the rain and participated in the Prep – Grade 2 House Athletics. This involved rotating through a range of activities including hurdles, long jump, target throw, speed bounce relay and shuttlecock throw. Congratulations to everyone who participated and well done to the red team for taking first place overall.
We finished off our inquiry into, ‘What can we learn from those who have come before us?’ by focusing on indigenous tools. We learned how tools were traditionally created from materials found on Country and we even had a go at making our own bowls by weaving wool.
We continued to explore Dreamtime stories in Literacy, this week studying the story, ‘The Eagle, The Crow and The Bat’. We discussed the different parts of the story including the introduction, the problem, the solution and the explanation. This story explained how Crow’s feathers turned black and also how our local area got its mountainous shape.
In Maths we finished up our unit on time by exploring quarter past and quarter to times, while our Wellbeing focus this week was on being gender fair. We read different scenarios and thought about how to respond with gender fairness. We also role-played some scenarios in small groups and shared these with the class.
We hope you all have a wonderful and relaxing holiday break and look forward to seeing you in Term 4!
Wendy, Laura, Claire, Sarah and Andrew
Hello from the 3/4 team!
Term 3 has come and gone in a flash! It has been exciting to see the development and growth of the skills of the grade 3 and 4 students throughout this term.
This week in Literacy students got their creative juices flowing as they wrote Haiku poems, a three-line poem where the first line contains 5 syllables, the second line 7 syllables, and the third line 5 syllables. Our poetry was inspired by the change in season according to the Dja Dja Wurrung calendar, while some students chose to write about our recent school performance!
In Maths, we have continued our exploration into decimals and converting fractions to decimals and vice versa. To solidify our understanding, we've engaged in a variety of fun and interactive decimal-focused games; one such game is Decimats – competing with a partner to colour in a whole shape first. These activities have helped our students grasp the concepts with ease and enthusiasm.
What should you do when someone uses mean or scary language on the Internet? This is the question that formed our eSmart lessons this week. Students considered that while they are enjoying their favourite websites, they may encounter messages from other kids that can make them feel angry, hurt, sad, or fearful. They explored ways to handle cyberbullying and how to respond in the face of upsetting language online. Students were introduced to the acronym STOP which gives advice on what to do when something goes wrong online.
As part of our wellbeing program, students explored challenging gender pressures in our RRRR lessons. Students identified ways that peers can put gender pressure on each other and discussed ways to show respect for the ways people want to express their gender. Through roleplays and scenarios students practised ways to challenge peers when they seek to limit choices because of a person’s gender.
Despite the wet weather on Tuesday, Grade 3/4S had their much-anticipated pizza making session with Nico. Together with the students from Grade 1/2CS, we expertly rolled out the dough, placed on the ingredients and then quickly devoured each slice. Thank you to our parent helpers who were able to join us. On behalf of all the students in Grade 3/4 we would like to say a massive thank you to Nico, Mikaela and Rick for volunteering their time each week to share their commitment, passion and expertise with our future gardeners. We have been very lucky to have you work with us this year.
To all our families, have a wonderful break. If you are heading away – travel safely and we look forward to seeing everyone back happy and healthy for the start of Term 4.
Sally, Louise, Mr Scott, Hannah and Carly
We have reached of what has been a very busy term. There was a lot of good vibes on Wednesday as the Grade 5s set off for a few days at the beach. We are looking forward to seeing some pictures and hearing the stories of how it all goes. Expect some tired kids home tonight!
Back at school we continued to work on our Big Question of “What is it made of and why?”. We have been learning about key terms such as solubility, particles and matter. Through an experiment with an ‘air cannon’ or a balloon, students were able to demonstrate that air is matter because it is made up of molecules that have mass and take up space, which are the defining properties of matter. We drew some scientific diagrams to show our thinking.
From Wednesday, the Grade 6s have been enjoying some time together. We have been measuring angles and creating ‘angle art’, making some ‘Year of the Snake’ craft and working on cracking some codes for a mystery. Wednesday was also the day of the Teddy Bear Picnic. It was very sweet watching the preps with their buddies and their special toys! The photos speak for themselves.
Keep a look out for your child’s Learning Journal, which will be coming home. We hope you all have a restful holiday and look forward to seeing all the students back for Term 4!
Division Athletics – Gr 4-6 select students
Our students enjoyed a successful day at Division Track and Field this week, with many earning ribbons across various events. Several students have also qualified for the Regional competition, which will take place early next term on Monday 13 October in Bendigo.
Region Athletics – Gr 4-6 select students
Region Track and Field will take place on Monday 13 October in Bendigo. Students who placed first or second in their events at Division have qualified for this event. If applicable, please begin arranging transport and supervision for your child. Carly will provide further details to the relevant families once official results are received.
House Athletics Gr P-2
We were fortunate to enjoy a break in the weather, allowing us to hold our Grade Prep–2 Junior House Athletics as scheduled on Tuesday. Students showed fantastic enthusiasm, singing their team chants with pride and showcasing their athletic skills in a range of modified events to earn points for their House.
A big thank you to our staff and SRC students for supporting student groups and running events.
Congratulations to Jackson (Red), who topped the leaderboard with 509 points. Laver (Green) followed in second place, with Freeman (Yellow) just one point ahead of Evans (Blue) in a very close finish for third and fourth.
Bike Education Grade 3-6
Next term, our Grade 3/4 and 5/6 classes will participate in the Bike Education program during their PE lessons. We anticipate that the program will start in Week 6 (beginning 10 November), which is the week following Melbourne Cup Day week. The program will run for four weeks.
Students will need to bring a roadworthy bike and a helmet to school on their scheduled PE day. Specific dates and further information will be sent home with students next term.
