Dear CNPS families,
It is hard to believe we only have 2 weeks left of this term. It has been productive in terms of classroom learning, with plenty of other activities sprinkled throughout, such as our interschool sport days and our Performing Arts and Visual Arts excursions. Teachers are also planning ahead, for the Prep/1 dinner and Grade 1 sleepover next term. The Grade 6 students are also looking forward to their camp in October. Please keep an eye out for emails, for the information and forms for upcoming events. We will also have dates on the Sentral parent calendar, and at the top of the weekly newsletter.
HAT SEASON
A reminder, that we are officially in Hat Season. Please dig out the school hat if you haven’t already, or buy a new one from our uniform shop in Barker St. Thank you for your support.
NEURO-DIVERSITY AWARENESS
Next Tuesday, Mr Higgins and some of our student leaders have organised a “Neuro-Diversity Awareness Day” (NDAD for short). The day will start with a whole-school assembly, where some of our students will share their experiences. Students will then work in their teams to respond to text or create a representation of our learning through Art or a writing piece. Parents are welcome to attend the assembly. We will also have some sharing back at the regular school assembly on the following Monday (Week 10). Students are invited to wear a solid colour of the rainbow on Tuesday.
SLOW FASHION PARADE
The Good Op Shop are keen to get more entries for their upcycled fashion show on Sunday September 15. Students can register for the Future Fashionistas Fiesta here: https://forms.gle/EAjKvSbiT8CFkyGD6. A big thank you to Andrew Stephens who has offered to run a cupcake stall at this event as a CNPS fundraiser. Please help with baking a batch of cupcakes if you can! See the info in this newsletter for more details on this.
KIMBERLEY LONG SERVICE LEAVE
I meant to include in last week’s newsletter, that our Indonesian teacher Kimberley, is taking LSL for the next 10 weeks of school; she is having a European adventure, which sounds amazing! We welcome Ben Wilson, our regular relief teacher, back to CNPS for the 10-week block.
PHOTO CONSENT FORM
Please keep an eye out for a hard-copy note that will be coming home with students next week. We require signed consent for each student, according to DE policy, which states parent consent for student images to be shared in the newsletter, website or within the school community. This is an updated policy, and the form will be a one-off consent, to save us collecting this information every year. Parents can of course withdraw or change consent at any time, as long as this is communicated in writing to the school.
PARENTING IN THE MODERN WORLD
Some of you may have accessed the local talks for parents, facilitated by Dhelkaya Health. The next one is on Thursday September 12 at the Castlemaine Library – 5.15-6.30pm– see information below:
BEFORE THE HORMONES HIT THE FAN
This talk centres around all things happening in and around our young people before puberty and hormones start to be a big part of their (and your) world. The talk will share the most up to date statistics on the issues facing this age group, how to talk puberty and sex, how to support the emotional journey, work with media, friendships, and relationships at this young age. This talk is directed at parents and carers of primary school aged children and promises you will leave with some surprising statistics, greater understanding of this age and some parenting tools, resources, and strategies to have a great relationships and foundations for the years to come.
Cupcakes!
We will be having a CNPS fund-raising cupcake stall at the Good Op Shop's upcycled fashion parade on Sunday 15 September 11am-1pm in Mechanics Lane (Town Hall if it is raining).
We would love families and kids to bake a batch to raise money for our school. Please drop off to the Silver Banksia kitchen around pick-up time next Friday 13 September (we’ll have containers on hand to plate-up your goodies).
Or SMS Andrew on 0407 747 775 to make another arrangement, such as dropping off on the morning of the parade.
The upcycled fashion parade is for under-18s and everyone who registers gets $20 to spend at The Good Op Shop so they can create a fabulous outfit!

Do you know of anyone who would be interested in becoming a crossing supervisor at some of our local school crossings?
The position requires a sensible and pragmatic approach to safety in relation to traffic, the use of Stop signs, and most importantly, the safe passage of children across some of our busy roads! It is a great opportunity to become a part of the local community as well as helping to keep our children safe.
Renumeration is based on an hourly rate, with an additional allowance for travel to and from which ever school crossing you are supervising. Training, equipment and uniform are provided.
The hours are approximately 40 minutes to an hour in the morning (depending on which school crossing you have been allocated) and roughly the same hours for the afternoon shift. Start times are from 8.10am to approximately 9.00am and the afternoon shift is 3.00pm to approximately 4.00pm.
If you, or someone you know, might be interested, please email:
j.sheldon@mountalexander.vic.gov.au and I can answer any questions and explain the role in greater detail.
This week was an exciting week as our prep students went on their very first excursion. The performance of I Wish at the Capital Theatre was a fun experience, amazing the students with its bright colours and exciting atmosphere. It was not only entertaining, but it also had an important message about the value of difference and individuality. A big thank you to Nicci for organising this wonderful opportunity for our students.
In literacy, we explored the ‘ch’ sound and practised reading and writing words that feature this code. We continued improving our sentence skills, focusing on using joining words ‘but’ and ‘because’. Our writing skills were demonstrated in the Cold Write topic My Adventures with My Pet, where we showed our understanding of capital letters, full stops and spacing between words. During our Big Question, we explored the similarities and differences between birthday celebrations from around the world with our own birthday traditions. In Maths, we have been exploring the concept of ordinal numbers, enjoying a variety of games and activities that help us understand the language of positing things in the correct order.
Next week, we will explore a new code and begin learning about different sentence types, including questions and statements. In maths, we will build on our time telling skills by learning to read o’clock and half past times. On Tuesday, we are celebrating Neurodiversity Awareness Day. We look forward to everyone wearing a colour of the rainbow to show support for neurodiversity. We will also be participating in some activities to help us learn more and raise awareness.
Have a great weekend,
Nicole and Lauren
Hello from the Golden Wattle building!
In Literacy this week we have been learning about the four different sentence types: statement, question, command and exclamation. We learned that each sentence type is used for a different purpose and the punctuation mark used depends on the type of sentence. Students experimented with each sentence type when they wrote a statement, question, command and exclamation that accompanied a picture prompt.
In Maths we have been working on understanding shapes. We have been busy recognising and describing the features of shapes and then used our knowledge to determine the area of an object. We measured the area of our Maths books, readers and our lunch boxes!
As part of our Big Question, “How and why do people celebrate?”, students found out about Diwali which is an Indian celebration. Indian families decorate their doorways to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth into their homes. They create beautiful patterns, called rangoli, on the floor using brightly coloured rice powders or sand. The most common patterns are shaped like a lotus blossom, a symbol of welcome. Students had a wonderful time creating their own rangoli around the school using chalk. Students also investigated Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr and were amazed to learn about people fasting during the day. They enjoyed making and eating a traditional dish of date and coconut balls!
In our Resilience, Rights and Respectful Relationships program we have been focusing on Gender and Identity. Students have been reflecting on their own identity (likes, dislikes, strengths) and through discussions, role plays, games, and scenarios have been developing an awareness of positive and negative gender norms.
On Friday we had a fantastic time in Bendigo when we visited the Bendigo Capital Theatre to watch the acrobatic and entertaining performance of I Wish. Thanks so much to Nicci for organising this experience for us and to the parent helpers who assisted us on the day.
Next week we look forward to continuing our focus on the four sentence types in Literacy, exploring 3D shapes and measurement in Maths and learning about Indigenous ceremonies, Thanksgiving and Chinese New Year as part of our Big Question, “How and why do people celebrate?”.
Have a lovely weekend!
Wendy, Sarah, Bec and Sally
Grade 3/4 Newsletter Term 3 Week 8
It’s been another great week for the Grade 3/4s filled with lots of learning and fun. In Literacy we have started exploring the Solar System. We have learnt about the universe, galaxies and planets and have come up with even more questions and wonderings to explore! When writing about the solar system we have been focusing on including adjectives to describe nouns. We also got our hands messy using papier mache to create models of the Earth and sun.
In Maths we have started learning about Mass. We have been using analogue scales to measure the mass of objects in grams and kilograms and converting between the two. We even came up with our own fruit salad recipes that needed to have a total mass of 500 grams.
On Tuesday afternoon, 3/4CN enjoyed spending time in the garden with Nico. Students helped clean out the chicken coop, organise the compost, prepare some seedlings, make some gorgeous wreaths and of course there was plenty of weeding too! A big thank you to Jodi (Beatrix’s Mum), Mikaela (Freida’s Mum) and Geoff and Wendy (Quinlyn’s grandparents) for their help.
Today the 3/4s had the chance to participate in the District Cricket and Tennis clinics. It was a huge day, including walking to and from the Tennis club and Western Reserve. A big thank you to our parent helpers – we’re sure everyone will sleep well tonight!
Next week we will continue exploring the Solar System in Literacy and will revisit shapes in Maths. We also have Neurodiversity Awareness Day on Tuesday where students come to school dressed in one colour of the rainbow. And finally, another reminder to please make sure students have their hats at school now that the weather is warming up.
Have a great weekend,
Louise, Hannah, Mr Scott, Claire and Nicci
Thanks for reading this week’s news from the Silver Banksia,
We have enjoyed our wintry start to Spring this week and returned (mostly) to a normal schedule following the completion last week of P4P. In Literacy, students used their five senses as we practised building tension in creative writing. They completed this term’s Cold Write with a narrative that included ideas about Australia’s history and our citizenship inquiry. We explored the magna carta and how it has led to the human rights enjoyed across the globe today. In Maths, we converted between fractions, decimals and percentages to perform calculations. In RRRR, we began to tune in to our positive self-talk.
On Friday, our students ventured to Wesley Hill for the Castlemaine district Cricket and Tennis competition.
Next week, students will begin to explore their own question related to our citizenship unit. This will culminate with an expo in week 10. Students will continue to work on applying their strategies for fractions, decimals and percentages, and apply these skills in a rich task called “Entertainment Adventure!”
Have a nice weekend everyone.
