Dear CNPS families,
Only ONE MORE sleep (and for our fete committee, maybe no more?!) until our long-awaited Fete! I am so proud of the CNPS community, in the ways that people have offered to contribute. Teachers, students and parents alike – your energy, generosity and willingness to put in the work to help our school raise some funds, is inspiring and heart-warming. A full list of Thank-yous in next week’s newsletter… but in the meantime, another shoutout to the incredibly hard-working lead committee – Ciel, Bree, Brea and Sarah – the FunRaising Superstars.

CAMPS NEXT WEEK
Our Grade 6 students are off to Urban Camp in Melbourne with Mr Higgins, Jay, Sam and Johannah (parent helper). This is a fantastic camp and a great CNPS tradition – we hope you have a wonderful time! The Grade 5 students will be at school with Hannah R and Liz from Wednesday to Friday. Our Grade Preps and Ones will enjoy games and a pizza dinner on Thursday after school, and the Grade 1 students will also enjoy a sleepover in the Golden Wattle! How exciting! Thank you to the organisers of these events, and to our parent helpers. Hopefully all forms and money are returned by now… if not, please organise this ASAP. Thank you.
NEWSTEAD YOUNG WRITERS FESTIVAL
A reminder that a fabulous kids’ event is taking place on Sunday in Newstead – please see the flier below for more information.
Have a 'Fete' weekend!

Hello from the Prep Rooms,
This week in Literacy we have been revising all the sounds we have learnt so far. After learning about the three main parts of a narrative (beginning, middle, end) everyone was excited to write our first STORY at school. Using puppets, we shared our short stories with our classmates and then wrote each part of our story. It was exciting to hear all the imaginative ideas and stories we came up with! In Maths, we have been extending our addition knowledge and skills to solve missing numbers such as 4 + ? = 6. We have been using strategies such as counting on to work out what the missing number is and checking to make sure. For BQT time this week, we observed our partners on the playground to investigate how they move, and which body parts are used. In our Science Journals we drew an observation of our partner and labelled their moving parts. We also discussed how different movements are appropriate for different situations for example moving quietly around a sleeping baby and running as fast as we can in a race.
Next week we will be learning two new codes that make the same sound ‘ay’ and ‘ai’ and when to use them. We will be writing another story which we will illustrate and turn into a book that we can share with our buddies before bringing it home. In Maths our focus is doubling and halving numbers.
A highlight next week will be our Prep Pizza Dinner/Grade 1 Sleepover next Thursday. We are all excited to come back after school and play games and have pizza for tea.
We wish you all a wonderful weekend and hope to see you at the CNPS Fete on Saturday!
Lauren and Nicole.
Fete preparation is gaining momentum, as everyone starts to get ready bringing items for show bags and baking goodies. During our gardening lessons we have been weeding and sprucing up the vegetable beds to make everything look lovely while you are munching on your pizzas. In our 1 / 2 team we have been making a variety of special things for the handicraft store. You can buy beautiful, brooches, candle lanterns and friendship bracelets that your students have made during STEAM and BQT these past few weeks.
In maths we have been practising dividing items, looking at division. We have then looked at our division tables in conjunction with our times tables of last week. We are working towards making books in literacy, discussing narratives and what makes a good story. This week we have focused on rich vocabulary to make our stories even more interesting. The harmony game has kept us entertained during our respectful relationships work as we have talked about what makes a good leader and discussed what our gender friendly classrooms look like.
Next week we look forward to starting our new unit, Where does energy come from, in inquiry
We look forward to seeing you all on Saturday,
Wendy, Sarah, Bec and Sally
Hello from the 3/4s! This week in Literacy we have been learning about the floods that affected our area in 2011 and 2022. We have read local newspaper articles, shared our own personal stories and learned about the preventative steps we can take to ensure the best outcomes for future floods. We used our knowledge of floods, as well as our imagination, for our Big Write this week titled, ‘A flood occurs…’. We also let our creative juices flow by creating Haiku poems describing the impact of floods.
Continuing with the flood theme, we had a STEAM Challenge where students needed to design and build a structure that could withstand a flood (or at least a full watering can!) Afterwards, students reflected on their designs and determined what they would do differently next time.
In Spelling we have continued focusing on Greek numbers – this week looking at the morphemes ‘tetra’ (which means four), ‘penta’ (means five), hexa (means six), hepta (means seven), oct/octa (means eight), deca (meas ten), hect (means one hundred) and poly (means many).
In Maths we’ve been revising using bar models to help us solve addition and subtraction problems. We’ve been focusing on worded problems and have used a checklist to make sure that we:
1. Understand the problem
2. Plan how to solve the problem
3. Solve
4. Check that we’ve solved it correctly
Next week in Literacy we’re moving into narratives, but continuing with a focus on floods. We will be reading the story ‘Flood’ by Jackie French and Bruce Whatley, and examining the different parts of a narrative.
In Maths we will be learning about volume and calculating the volume of different shapes.
We also have our ‘Making Friends With Worry’ workshop on Wednesday which unpacks what happens in our bodies when we feel anxious, and what strategies we can use when we feel stressed or worried.
We hope you have a great weekend and look forward to seeing you at our school fete on Saturday!
Louise, Mr Scott, Hannah, Claire and Nicci
Week 2 of Term 4 is done! The weather has been mostly glorious, and we’ve been softballing! The excitement is palpable as we play Grade 5 vs Grade 6 or class vs class in the lead up to the big game in Week 11.
Our novel study has been such a wonder. The first precept (When given the choice between being right or being kind, choose kind.) has led us to create a few of our own precepts – “When given the choice between easy and right, choose right” or “When given the choice between doing your job and not doing your job, do your job.” The students are enjoying deep diving into the book and having meaningful discussions to tease out the complexities of the novel.
In maths, we have continued our algebraic learning and using our understanding of the order of operations (BODMAS). Here’s a dose of what the 5/6s have been working on. Can you find the value of x?
3x + 4 = 28
We’re also learning about the processes that shape Earth, including continental drift, the different types of rock and how weathering and erosion can form buttes (byoots). We’ll go further with this and explore how this knowledge can help us design creative solutions to solve problems.
Urban camp is next week so Mr Higgins, Jay and Sam Kerr will all be away with the Grade 6s navigating the city on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. The Grade 5 students will still come to school but will be with Hannah and Liz working on school captain speeches and other fun things.
We hope to see you all at the fete on Saturday!
Hannah, Jay, Sam, Liz, Giovanna and Mr Higgins
