Dear CNPS families,
Semester 1 – done and dusted! Student reports should be available in Sentral this afternoon, and students will have Learning Journals in their bags today (if not already sent home this week). Can I please request, that the journals are kept in a safe location over the holidays – teachers and students spend many hours on these learning samples, and they make a great keepsake for years to come. Please make some time to share your child’s journal over the holidays, and return to school in the first days of Term 3.
Some parents were lucky to witness the fabulous Grade 1 and 2 Weather Reports yesterday afternoon (with a recording available for those who couldn’t make it). They were the cutest weather presenters I have ever seen, and the student-made maps of Australia were delightful! Well done to the Grade 1/2 teachers, for facilitating this rich learning sequence.
THANK YOU…
To the Bendigo Braves (via Cass, from the women’s team), for a donation of some basketballs in very good condition – very exciting addition to our playground equipment!
To Nicole Turner, who donated the lovely plantings (and also for planting them!) in the garden bed near the Silver Banksia building.
To Carys and friends, for spending some of their lunchtimes raking the last of the leaves. Our entrances and paths look much nicer!
BASKETBALL COURT UPGRADE
I have submitted the next round of funding application to the VSBA to rebuild our basketball court. There is quite a long timeline on the processing of applications for this round; we will hear if we have been successful in Term 4.
PARENT SOCIAL NIGHT
Thanks to Ciel and the FR Crew, who are putting together a mid-winter social night – put Friday Aug 2 in your diaries! More information to come.
END OF TERM THANKS
A big thank you, as always, to the fabulous CNPS Staff, who work so hard to make sure our students are provided with excellent support across many areas of their development – academically, socially, emotionally, physically and creatively. It is a fabulous team of dedicated, skilled and passionate people; I feel so lucky to have them on our team, and I wish them a restful term break. Thank you to all parents and extended family, who help at CNPS in various ways – your support is crucial. Thank you to our amazing students, for being willing and curious learners, and for caring about each other.
Have a safe and happy break – we look forward to seeing you in 2 weeks.

Hello from the Prep rooms!
What an amazing first semester we have had full of bravery, curiosity and growth from every student. We have sent your child’s learning journal home today, and we hope you enjoy going through them with your child and celebrating their achievements so far this year.
The highlight of the week was Milo’s Birthday Party, an event we had all been eagerly anticipating! We were impressed with the effort that everyone put into dressing up as one of Milo’s friends. We were also proud of the bravery students showed when standing up and telling everyone at assembly the character they dressed up as. During the day we enjoyed going on a character hunt around the school, playing party games such as pass-the-parcel, musical chairs and bobs and statues and then sharing the amazing assortment of party food together, especially the yummy birthday cake. We thank you for supporting this memorable and fun event for the students.
Next term, we are focusing on the Big Question “How and why do people celebrate?” We look forward to hearing about the different ways your family celebrate special events in your family’s life. If you have a unique way that you, a family member or friend could share with the class to add to this question, we would greatly appreciate your input.
We hope you all have a safe and relaxing holiday with your family and look forward to seeing everyone back next term.
Lauren and Nicole
This week has been all about weather reports! Viewing weather report examples, working together to brainstorm ideas, writing scripts, creating props and practising as many times as possible. All this hard work culminated yesterday with each class transforming into a television studio and presenting their finished products to classmates and parents. What a wonderful way to finish the term!
Amongst the weather report action there was of course some crazy hair on Tuesday. Didn’t our students look amazing?! It was hard to recognise some of them under the hair gel and coloured hair spray! We’ve also played some maths games, revisited homophones, had some quiet reading in the mornings and of course we celebrated our Stars of the Week; Elijah, Annabelle, and Monty.
Learning Journals have been sent home today and are a wonderful way of exploring and discussing the learning that has taken place this term. Take some time to enjoy these together and keep them safe and ready to return in the first week back in term 3.
We wish all our 1/2 families a restful and happy midyear break.
Sarah, Bec, Wendy and Sally
There has been a bit of an uproar and ‘watery eyes’ in the Iron Bark Building this week. The Grade ¾ students have finished reading Storm Boy and watched the movie to celebrate their hard work that they have put into this unit of work. Storm Boy has been a hit for many students (and their teachers) where many discussions and opinions have been shared.
Here are some writing samples:
The wind as strong as a tornado smashed against the humpy. - Brax
The Captain flopped up the wet, soggy beach. – Darcy
The ear-piercing wind hit the humpy like a bombshell exploding in the water. – Luca
After the exhausted Captain was on the sandy shore, he feebly walked up the beach. – Taylah
The wind howled dismally like a wolf on a dark night – Audrey
“Quickly” bellowed Storm Boy running out of the humpy. – Milly
The boobyalla branches shattered violently in the wind. – Sadie A-R
After the captain was on shore, he crawled up the beach in exhaustion. – Henry
“Quickly” yelled Storm Boy. Sadie B.
Violently, the furious wind thrashed the humpy with anger. Phoebe A
The boobyalla branches snapped in the ferocious wind. – Anita
In Maths, students have explored symmetry and volume. Here’s a snippet of an activity we completed. Students approached this problem in many different ways such as building the prism, and others using mathematical processes to solve.
To all our families, have a wonderful break. If you are heading away – travel safely and we hope to see everyone back happy and healthy for the start of Term 3.
The Iron Bark Team.
Well done 5/6s, we made it to the end of Term 2! We packed in a lot this week.
On Monday, each of the 5/6 classes took part in a workshop with the Monkey Baa Theatre Company. Students were pushed out of their comfort zones and, in small groups, created a 3-part still image with their bodies to tell a story. This experience was engaging and a great introduction for the performance of 'The Peasant Prince' next term.
Classes finished reading the novel War Horse. It was great to hear the discussions and predictions on how the story would end. Students worked hard on completing their persuasive writing plans for the Big Write, arguing the topic of whether horses should or shouldn’t have been used in WW1.
Hair was the talk of the school on Tuesday, with students across the school supporting some unique looks. Thank you to everyone for your donations towards MAAWs (Mount Alexander Animal Welfare Shelter).
In Maths this week, we got creative with angle artwork – using angles to design their work and showing their learning of angles by annotating the different angles.
We hope you have a restful holiday and look forward to seeing everyone back and ready to learn in Term 3!
Hannah, Mr. Higgins, Giovanna, Liz, Jay & Sam
We have finished the term on a high with grades 3/4 visiting the Castlemaine Art Museum on Tuesday. Students had the opportunity to explore downstairs in the museum, learning about Castlemaine’s history as well as being guided by two volunteers upstairs in the ‘Stoneworks’ exhibition. Thank you to Bree Carr, Lindy Alexander and Nicole Turner for volunteering your time and thank you to Ash, Beck and Nicci for coming along too.
Grades 5/6 J and 5/6 HG participated in a live online lesson with the National Portrait Gallery in celebration of NADOC Week which starts next week. Presenting to the students was April Phillips, Wiradjuri-Scottish educator with ancestry from the Galari/Kalari peoples of regional NSW. April discussed the importance of NADOC Week and this year’s theme, ‘Keep the Fire Burning, Blak, Loud and Proud’. Students were shown some of the portraits of First Nations people from the gallery and participated in a little drawing activity.
If you are staying in town these holidays and are looking for an activity there is a great exhibition on at the Castlemaine Art Museum. The exhibition is designed for children aged 4-11 and includes sense-based installations that draw on touch, sound, vision, smell and taste to create an environment that is fun, engaging and activates children’s curiosity while connecting them to strategies and techniques that support resilience and wellbeing. It includes a variety of materials for play and is a space that children can spend time to explore their senses, feelings, thoughts, worries and hopes.
‘The Children’s Sensorium’ opens June 27th to August the 4th at Castlemaine Art Museum.
The Castlemaine Documentary Festival is having its tenth birthday next weekend 14-16 June... and there is something special in there for the kids.
Join us in our Yurt micro-cinema for a screening of Kids on the Silk Road, an engaging observational series that explores the lives of young people aged 10-14.
These four films offer a close look at the daily struggles and ambitions of children from China, Azerbaijan, Pakistan, and Ukraine, providing a unique perspective on their world. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 concession.
