Dear CNPS families,
What a great way to end the week; the Book Week parade is such a colourful and smile-inducing event! Thanks for your support with the student costumes; whether it is an elaborate work of art, or some face paint and a cape, it is a fantastic opportunity for the students to be creative and enjoy connecting to favourite/new characters and stories. The parade was followed by multi-age activities, where students enjoyed one of the short-listed books and responded with an Art activity. Thank you to Hannah Vellacott and Bec Ryan for overseeing the day and designing the activities, and to Hannah R and the School Captains for running the parade. We also enjoyed a sharing assembly after recess.

ALICE IN WONDERLAND – CSC PERFORMANCE
According to my sources, the Castlemaine Secondary College performance of Alice in Wonderland is excellent, and you should go see it, if you can! There are still tickets left for this weekend, See the flier in the community noticeboard for more information.
NEWSTEAD YOUNG WRITERS FESTIVAL
Last week, our students met Dean (aka Willy Wonka), from the Newstead Young Writer’s Festival committee; he shared information about an event in October, where students can meet writers and illustrators, and even go in the running to have feedback on their own writing! See attached flier for more details. You can also check out their social media pages and website:

FUTURE FASHIONISTAS FIESTA
We had Tiff from the Good Op Shop as a visitor at our assembly on Monday, and she spoke to the students about how there are enough clothing items already in circulation in our world, to clothe the next 6 generations! They are encouraging us all to think about buying less “new” things, and using what we have, purchasing from Op Shops/second hand stores and markets, and even swapping clothes with others. The upcycled fashion parade is being held on Sunday September 15th in the Mechanics Lane in Castlemaine – see flier below for more details. Sounds like fun! The CNPS Parent Fun Raisers have agreed to run a cupcake stall on the day as well – stay tuned for a call-out for cupcake donations!
STUDENT LED LEARNING EXPO (WEDNESDAY 28th AUG)
Please find the event page for our Student Led Learning Expo here.
Families can visit any time within their 45-minute booking, which also allows more flexibility than a 15-minute appointment.
The class teachers will be in the room throughout this time and will be available for an informal chat (not for individual progress reporting) or to assist any students with their sharing if required.
CNPS Fete 2024!
Dress Ups!
What a wonderful Book Week parade we had this year. Now, what to do with all those unwanted costumes and dress-ups? Give them to us for our pop-up Transformation Tent! This year we will have a mega-tent filled with face-painting, kids hair dressing salon and dress ups, finishing up with an Instagram-able Red Carpet walk! Please contact Ciel to organise collection/school drop-off via 0406 604 773.
Start Planting!
CNPS Mum Angelica is Leading the Fete Plant and is asking you to start planting to grow seedlings! Her recommended plant stall prep for August/September is as follows:
· Indoor vining plants & succulents: start propagation (water or soil).
· Veggie & fruit seedlings: perpetual spinach, capsicum, eggplant, climbing beans, chilli, kale, silver beet. Can start tomato seedlings soon (just watch out for frost), plus parsley, basil, and strawberry.
· Native plants: if anyone knows how to grow some local natives that would be much appreciated!
For more info contact Angelica via plantstall24@gmail.com or join the WhatsApp group she has created: CNPS Fete Plant Stall 2024
Fete Volunteer Sign-up’s
Soon we will re-share the Fete Volunteer sign-up link and schedule with lots of new volunteer helper spots available to support Leads on stalls, or in the fete catering tent, with set-up & pack-down, general roust-abouting and our pick-up & delivery Ute-Troupe shifts - for Friday 18th and Saturday 19th October. Mark your diaries, and stay tuned.
The 2024 CNPS Fete Raffle
The on-line raffle is shaping up wonderfully thanks to the generous donations of our parent and alumni community and the wider business community. Tickets will go on sale on Saturday 7th September with over $4,500 worth of prizes on offer and tickets starting at just $2! We will draw the winners on Sat 19th Oct at the Fete. Being an on-line raffle we will be able to share the links far and wide, but we will also want to do some pop up hard copy ticket sales in the lead-up to the draw.
If anyone is able to help with managing the hard-copy ticket books and sales please contact Ciel via 0406 604 773.

BOOK WEEK PHOTO GALLERY
Hello from the Prep rooms,
WOW, what a fabulous end to the week with our highly anticipated Book Week Parade. It was fantastic to see the effort and creativity that went into everyone’s amazing costumes and the excitement that it created. It is certainly a highlight on our annual calendar. After the parade, we enjoyed celebrating book week through a whole school multi-age activity where we got to explore a range of shortlisted books.
This week in Literacy the Prep students have learnt the ‘ck’ sound and have practised reading and writing words containing this code and making the black duck character that goes with this code. We have enjoyed reading many of the short-listed picture story books as we celebrate book this week. In Maths, we explored the concept of probability (chance) by using terms such as ‘will happen’, ‘won’t happen’, or ‘might happen’ and applied these ideas to real world examples.
Next week, in Literacy we will be focussing on words containing the ‘sh’ sound and continuing to use ‘but and ‘because’ in our sentences. In Maths, we will further expand our knowledge of place value and explore writing, reading and making numbers beyond 20. We are also looking forward to welcoming parents into the classroom on Wednesday afternoon to our Student Led Expo. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to show their parents around the classroom and share work samples. Families can visit any time within their 45-minute booking time.
We hope you have a wonderful weekend!
Nicole and Lauren
What a week! Between wet day timetables, the curriculum day and the Book Week Parade, it’s amazing we’ve squeezed in so much learning.
Our literacy lessons this week were all about Book Week, its history and what it means. We were surprised to learn that the first Book Week was in 1945! We explored the 2024 theme of ‘Reading is Magic’ and read and responded to some of the gorgeous, short-listed books. We also had a wonderful online session with author and illustrator Freya Blackwood who taught the children that there are no right or wrong ways to draw and that our drawings can inspire the beginning of a story.
In Maths, we continued to learn about time, focussing on telling the times of half past, quarter past and quarter to. Students then created a timeline of their day to demonstrate what they had learnt.
Our current big question; ‘How and why do we celebrate?' is well under way, with students working in groups to think about what you need when planning for a celebration. We also produced a class definition of what a celebration is, with 1/2SB coming up with - ‘A celebration is a time when people come together with family and/or friends to have fun’.
Then, of course we finished the week off with the famous CNPS Book Parade! Thankyou for all the effort families put into preparing for this day and helping us celebrate the joy of reading (and dressing up) with your children. Today fitted perfectly into 1/2SB’s definition of what a celebration is!
Have a wonderful weekend.
Sarah, Sally, Bec and Wendy
Hello from Grade 3 and 4 Land,
Week 6 has come and gone, with a curriculum day and the exciting Book Week activities to end the week.
During literacy, we reviewed our latest Cold Write, sharing our work with others and celebrating the language features we used to create exciting stories.
I wake up to the sound of a beautiful melody of chirping birds. – Thea
The ship wasn’t going any further. Garry grabbed his stuff and hopped into the lifeboat. It was cold and freezing. His hands were wet, his heart was pounding, and his face was pale. His feet were sore and in pain. – Henry
I screamed, but nothing came out! My feet felt stuck to the ground. My palms were sweaty, and my heart was racing. – Stella
After an hour of being on that dreadful ship, his palms were sweaty, his feet were tired, and his face was turning pale. – Eddie
With fear, the strong-hearted man slowly walked into the cold, wet cave. Whenever he took a step, it got hotter and hotter. – Elijah
One day, I woke up on the ship only to see a huge tropical paradise outside my window. I quickly threw on an old pair of pants and a t-shirt and ran to the pier. I heard the birds chirping and felt the nice, soothing water on my feet as they dangled off the ship. – Piper
This week, we have begun looking at students' wonderings that have come from our knowledge unit about the First Fleet and our First Nations people. Each classroom has slight variations in this process as we explore the skills needed to be strong collaborators, researchers, and self-managers. We will continue this process next week before starting our exploration into space!
During mathematics, we used this week to review, reteach, and extend our skills in telling time and calculating elapsed time. Next week, our focus will be on analysing, using, and displaying data.
During Respectful Relationships, we explored the communication skills needed to form relationships while playing a charades-type game.
Nina and Parvin working on their communication skills during a Respectful Relationships lesson.
Another big week done and dusted in Silver Banksia. This week has seen us working on the enlargement transformation in Maths. Students chose a picture and then drew it to scale four times larger than the actual size. We’ve been learning about migration to Australia in the 19th and 20th centuries including the influx of migrants following the discovery of gold in Australia and people emigrating from Ireland due to the potato famine. In Word Study, we’ve looked at the capt-capit morpheme which means head/lead and have learned words such as captain, capitalise, decapitate and capitulate. The Book Week celebration was a huge success, and we want to acknowledge the extra work that parents do to support their children to create such amazing costumes.
Next week is the final P4P/eSmart session on Monday and then on Wednesday we have our Student Led Expo! If you have not yet booked a time for your child to share their learning with you, please do so. We also have the Making Friends with Worry workshop on Friday which aims to equip students with the tools required to deal with worry and anxiety.
Next week we will be diving back into learning about fractions in Maths, dinosaur names in Word Study, and continuing with our focus on migration stories.
District Cricket / Tennis Grade 3-6
On Friday 6th September all our Grade 3-6 students will participate in our District event.
Our Grade 5/6 students will participate at Wesley Hill in either modified Cricket Blast matches where all students get to experience fielding, bowling one over, keeping wicket for one over and batting with a partner for two overs per match, or modified Hot Shots Tennis matches where all students play singles and doubles.
Our Grade 3/4 students will participate at Castlemaine Tennis Club and Western Reserve in both Hot Shot Tennis matches and skill-based Cricket activities, alternating sports after a lunch break.
Permission notes went home this week. We will require the assistance of parents / carers to supervise groups.

Grades Prep to 2 will be heading to Bendigo on the 6th of September to watch a circus performance called I Wish… Families in those grades, please see the note that went home this week with the information and return payment as soon as possible.
Later in the term (date TBC) all the students across the school will be participating in Busking for Change. Busking for Change is a fundraiser by the Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF), developed by Josh Pyke to engage Primary School students in a musical literacy and raise awareness about Indigenous languages. The 2024 song is Shordi Krik. Once our students have mastered the song, they will ‘busk’ or perform the song collectively or individually to you, their friends, family.
The Indigenous Literacy Foundation (ILF) is a national charity of the Australian Book Industry, working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander remote Communities across Australia. The ILF is Community-led, responding to requests from remote Communities for culturally relevant books, including early learning board books, resources, and programs to support Communities to create and publish their stories in languages of their choice.
Next Thursday the 29th of August Grades 5/6 will be going on an excursion to the Bendigo Art Gallery to see an exhibition by First Nations artists called ‘The Power of Colour’ and Rob McHaffie’s ‘We are family’. Thank you to the Fundraising group who have covered the cost of the train fair, making this excursion free for students. Notes went home last week with more details about the day.
Here are some of the Tetra Pak prints the 5/6s finished last week.
