Term 4 Week 1

Literacy

Phonics

In Phonics this week, students began practising the Level 4 digraph sounds and learning the new sounds /sh/ and /ch/. They practised writing these sounds and reading texts that included them.

Reading

In Reading, we learned the difference between facts and opinions. Students then explored their five senses through hands-on activities, describing what they could see, hear, smell, touch and taste.

We connected our learning to our community and school, sharing places we liked and disliked. Students went on a walk around the school, visiting places such as the playground and gym and recording their preferences on a map.

To finish the week, students explored different hobbies and activities, including LEGO, puzzles, playdough, colouring and basketball, and shared what they enjoyed.

Writing

In Writing, students created lists of things they like and dislike and practised using ‘because’ to explain their reasons. They also used their five senses to build descriptive vocabulary and wrote sentences about places they liked in their community and school.

Students finished the week by drawing and writing about what they like to do in their spare time, sharing their interests and experiences.

numeracy

This week, our students have been learning about data and how we can collect, record and represent information. They learnt that data is information we collect. We explored how tally marks can help us record and count information in an organised way. Throughout the week, students participated in a range of hands-on activities to develop their understanding of data.

For the activity students rolled the dice, write the number that is rolled and draw the matching number of tally marks. They completed a data sheet with data that has already been collected from a class and counted how many students said “Yes” and how many said “No”-Write the number, draw the matching number of tally marks.

During the week students collected a data by asking questions from their peers based on the 'yes' and 'No' questions. They recorded each response on their data template using tally marks and counted their tally marks when they finished. These activities supported students important mathematical skills such as counting, recording information, comparing quantities and communicating their findings.

personal & social

This week in Personal and Social Learning, we learnt about the Circle of Control. Students explored the difference between things that are within our control and things that are outside of our control.

For example, students learnt that we can control what we watch on TV because we can choose the show we want to watch, but we cannot control if it rains outside because we cannot change the weather. 🌧️📺

Students shared their own examples and discussed different scenarios. We gave them different situations and they were able to explain whether each one was within their control or outside of their control.

It was wonderful to see the students so engaged in their learning, confidently sharing their ideas and listening to the perspectives of others.

Directed discovery

In Directed Discovery, we have been learning about different places in our community and what happes in each place.

We explored photos of different places around Craigieburn and shared what we already know about them. The students also drew places that are important to them and explained why these places are special.

We then explored the different people who work in our community. We named community workers, matched them to the places where they work and discussed why they work there and how they help us.

To build on our learning, the students coloured in pictures of different community buildings and wrote the purpose of each place.
