At Year 10, students are encouraged to draw on their experiences from Years 7 to 9. Students should select subjects with their future pathways in mind, whilst also remaining open to possibilities and subjects that they have not yet had the chance to explore.
Curriculum Overview
Year 10 students study 5 subjects per semester. Each subject has five one-hour lessons per week.
English and Mathematics are compulsory whole year subjects.
Students can select from a range of electives, covering the learning areas of Science, Humanities, Health and Physical Education, Languages, The Arts, and Technology.
Subject Selection
Students are strongly encouraged to select subjects from a broad range of learning areas.
Students should consider the following factors when selecting subjects:
What subjects do I enjoy?
What subjects do I feel complement my strengths and interest areas?
What subjects might be helpful for my future pathways?
Some Year 10 subjects are mandatory preparation for equivalent VCE subjects (such as languages). Generally, most Year 10 subjects are recommended preparation for equivalent VCE subjects. They are not pre-requisites.
Students should consider information from their Morrisby Profile to help them in the subject selection process.
Students will need to select their desired subjects in preference order, including reserves. Subject selections will be entered via the Web Preferences portal.
Enhancement Opportunities
VCE Enhancement
All Year 10 students will have the opportunity to apply for a VCE Enhancement subject. This involves students studying a Unit 1 and 2 (Year 11) subject in Year 10. The advantages of this include:
studying a subject at an advanced level, compared to Year 10
completing VCE with six Year 12 subjects, which can help maximise a students Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) For more information on how the ATAR is calculated, visit our Resources page.
ensuring students can access a broader range of VCE subjects across their senior school studies
being able to better cater for student ability and aptitude in certain subjects
Student applications are assessed against student academic performance, teacher recommendation, and subject availability.
In some cases, students may be able to apply for more than one VCE Enhancement subject, as part of their Year 10 curriculum. These applications will be considered on a case-by-case basis.
The Centre for Higher Education Studies (CHES)
The Centre for Higher Education Studies is an educational centre of excellence, designed to provide senior secondary students from across Victoria with opportunities to stretch, challenge and accelerate their studies.
Aspirational and high-achieving students at Glen Eira College are strongly encouraged to consider applying to study a subject through CHES. Students remain enrolled at Glen Eira College whilst accessing different types of subjects through CHES. Students predominantly participate in subjects through CHES online.
Subjects offered through CHES include:
VCE Algorithmics Units 3 and 4
VCE Extended Investigation Units 3 and 4
Year 10 Electives
Semester long subjects designed to extend and challenge students who are interested in important foundations of successful university study: research, critical thinking, and computational thinking
Can be used as preparation for VCE subjects offered through CHES
Students generally complete this work outside of school hours; these are not intended to replace electives that students would be studying at Glen Eira College
2026 Year 10 electives are idea for high-achieving 2025 Year 9 and Year 9 SEAL students who would like to continue to extend themselves in their learning, and/or who may consider studying a VCE subject through CHES as part of their VCE program in the future.
More information about CHES can be found here: https://ches.vic.edu.au/
Sample Courses
This student has performed strongly in Mathematics in Year 9, and their teacher has recommended that they move into Advanced Mathematics in Year 10. After speaking with their Humanities teacher, they are applying for an Enhancement subject: Units 1 and 2 Legal Studies. They enjoyed 2D Art in Year 9, so they’re interested in furthering their skills in Year 10 in Visual Communication Design. The student has rounded out their selections with other electives from Science (Psychology), Health and Physical Education (Human Movement) and Technology (Computer Applications).
This student has really enjoyed studying French in Years 7 to 9, and has applied for French in Year 10. They don’t believe they need a higher level of mathematics in VCE, so after consulting with their Mathematics teacher as well as looking at the results of their Morrisby testing, have applied for General Mathematics. They have then rounded out their selections with a Humanities subject (Money and Markets); an Arts subject (Visual Arts); a Science subject (Biology) and a Technology subject (Food and You).
This student has completed the SEAL and CNED programmes and performed strongly in English, Mathematics and the CNED French classes. Subsequently, they have been advised to select two Year 11 subjects in Year 10: Specialist Mathematics and French. They are also studying Advanced English. Their other four electives come from a broad range of learning areas: Humanities (Money and Markets); Science (Chemistry and Physics); Health and Physical Education (Teenage Issues) and Technology (IT and Robotics Systems).
