We have made a lot of changes to the way we structure our Numeracy block to ensure we are maximising the opportunities for students to learn, retain and recall important maths concepts and ideas. Our staff and students enjoy our maths lessons more than they ever have before.
Top-10 Numeracy program
At Campbells Creek Primary School, our Numeracy program is based around the Top-10 Numeracy Resources Program. Created by Australian Numeracy coaches and primary teachers, Top-10 is a sequenced hands-on program aimed at helping teachers and students engage with and love the journey of learning maths. It provides students with a consistent approach to learning as they progress through primary school.
3:2 model
We have recently changed the way we teach maths on a weekly basis. All grades now follow the 3:2 model - 3 days learning about a number based concept (i.e. addition/fractions/etc) and 2 days learning about a measurement/statistics based concept (i.e. length/graphing/etc). This has meant we are able to cover and revisit topics. Our students have the opportunity to make connections in their learning (e.g between multiplication and area) and are better able to retain the information.
‘Get It’ instructional model
Our school uses the “Get It” Instructional Model as the framework for our maths lessons. This structure is based around research on how to get essential maths skills into the student’s long term memory.
All of our lessons begin with a maths game or activity to warm up and get students thinking about maths, followed by an explicit “mini lesson” of 10 minutes (max!). Students then take part in a dual processing activity where they share their understanding with their peers. The lesson ends with a whole class reflection to consolidate their learning.
Classroom displays
Our classrooms feature colourful, eye-catching displays and “anchor charts”. These work as a second teacher in the room. Anchor charts provide our students with a visual reminder of prior learning. Knowing they can access this information quickly supports our students’ learning, during both independent and teacher-led work.
