The Grade 3/4 students have been working very hard over the past weeks researching and preparing their group presentation of their chosen inquiry topic. The students are currently putting together their presentations, ready for our Inquiry Showcase where the buddies and APPS community are invited to come along and watch the students present.
The Grade 3 and Grade 4 students enjoyed their Numeracy Transition last Friday. The students enjoyed completing lots of various maths activities and tasks.
Congratulations to the Antonio Park Beavers who participated in the State Hoop Time Future Stars Grand Final Day last Thursday at Dandenong Stadium. It was a huge day for Rishi, Teiva, Reuben, Madeleine, Maddi, Annabelle, Charlie, Cooper and Rohan, who represented our school with excellent sportsmanship and pride! The team had a wonderful day playing 3 games and making it to an elimination final. A huge thank you to Amanda Ferreira for her time training and coaching the team, and to Tracy Wilks for scoring the games. It was excellent to see so many parents come along and support the team on the day. What Future Star basketballers these students are!!

News report
Haydn: Hey Darcy, have you gone on the giant swing?
Darcy: Puw Puw! Yeah I have. I went to the top and it was horrifying! Did you go to the top?
Haydn: Well of course I did.
Darcy: Was it scary?
Haydn: Yeah, it felt like you will hit the ground!
Darcy: Now to the mechanical wall! How was that?
Haydn: It started off slow but then it got faster until you fell off.
Darcy: It was so fast on your second turn! It wasn't that hard though because it's always the same rocks.
Haydn: Onto the trampoline!
Darcy: Under the trampoline there was a creek and you jump so high!
Haydn: Thanks everyone. See you in the next time!
Camp is fun especially the giant swings,
You felt like you have giant wings!
Phillip island here we come!
The day was fun, we didn't need gum.
The drive was very long,
At night we sang a song.
Oh the trampolines, what can I say!
When there’s free time I go there every day
The camp was exciting but it's over sadly,
Now it's time to go home as we miss our parents badly.

Yaaa we're here!!!
Hi everyone! Last week the 3/4 students went to Phillip Island for camp.
When we got there we went to a meeting room and we were told our activity groups. The activities were the giant swing, the circatron, crate climbing, mechanical wall, low ropes, archery and trampoline. Then we started our first activity. After the activity the teachers told us our cabins/lodges. We then started unpacking our luggage and got our bed ready. Then we had afternoon tea and... started our second activity! After the activity we had dinner and dessert. After that we got ready to leave to the Penguin Parade. The penguins were so cute.
The next day we woke up, got dressed and had breakfast. After breakfast we started our activities, stopping for morning tea and lunch. After we'd finished the remaining activities we had afternoon tea and then went to the beach. When we returned we had dinner and dessert and then we did red faces.
The next day we had breakfast and got ready to leave. We headed of to the koala conservation. Then we went home.

It was a sunny day but it was cold
And some of the people were gold
We had lots of fun with our friends
We wish that the activities would never end
People had fun on the giant swing

Our favourite food was all the meat

3/4 camp was such a blast,
It just went so amazingly fast!
The gum trees heavily swayed
at the cold penguin parade.
The chicken was perfectly cooked,
the pasta however over looked.
The crate climb made me so dizzy,
Wearing a helmet made my hair frizzy!

As we pulled up through the gates we all rushed out of the bus in anticipation of our cabin arrangements. Sadly we didn’t find out straight away but not to worry because we had lots of look forward to including...
The activities that we did:
Some of the things you could do in your spare time independently:
Some of the things you could do in your spare time with a parent:
Some of the food wasn’t amazing going, like the spaghetti, some of which wasn’t cooked “al dente”. For breakfast it was cereal and toast. The meals that were good were the chicken with vegetables and chips as well as the lunches and deserts.
The Giant Swing - As my adrenaline rushed through my body I pulled the green rope ARGH I dropped and swung backwards and forwards.

Last week we went to Phillip Island, we had lots of fun.
We went on activities including the giant swing, trampoline, crate climb, archery, mechanical wall, circatron and low ropes.
There were cabins and lodges. We did red faces. We went to the koala sanctuary and the penguin parade. We ate breakfast, morning tea, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner and finally desert.
We stayed there for three days and two nights.
Giant swing:
On the giant swing you had to pull the rope and then you'd drop down and swing. You tell the staff member how high you want to go.
Trampoline:
For the trampoline you have a time limi which was a quarter of a circle and you can do whatever you want in that quarter.
Crate climb:
In crate climb you have to climb crates. You have to stack them up as high as you can and you also have to climb it. You climb until it wobbles too much and that's when it is going to fall.
Archery:
In archery you have to pull the bow back and then release. Wherever you point the arrow, that’s where it's going to land.
Mechanical wall:
On the mechanical wall you have to climb the wall while the machine is moving down.
Circatron:
On the Circatron you move anywhere!
Low ropes:
The low ropes is an obstacle course where you have climb stuff and test your balancing skills.

We went to camp on a warm Wednesday,
Then we went out because it was time to play.
Oh, the never ending bus trip,
We (sometimes) stopped for a sip.
Those few nights we were in a bed,
We were so tired it looked like we were dead.

3/4 camp was RAD,
The giant swing was CRAY CRAY!!!,
We loved it a ton!!!
Gliding through the air,
Fifteen meters to be exact,
The wind is crazy!!!

Weeks 1 and 2 in the 3/4 Team are being dominated by the Excursion Maths Project! Bringing together a wide range of mathematical skills and understandings. Concepts such as mapping, calendars, timetables, schedules, time, measurement and all four operations are being used in really meaningful ways, which is giving plenty of ‘real-life’ experience to students.
The premise is simple – plan and organise the 3/4 Team’s end of year celebration excursion. Students are working exceptionally well in teams, and there’s a real buzz in classrooms as students work together to produce their presentation, as well as a running sheet and permission note for the excursion. We’re really excited about seeing the results next week!
Just as exciting is the Public Speaking Competition, which Antonio Park students take part in every year. This year’s theme is again related to making the world a better place, which also encourages students to think deeply about their opinions, as well as present them by speaking clearly, using eye contact and hand gestures.
Another important aspect of the 3/4 curriculum at Antonio Park is Respectful Relationships. This is a relatively new learning area, and fits into Personal & Social Capabilities, and Health & Personal Development heading. This term, students will learn about how their family, friends, gender, cultural background, interests and experiences contribute to who they are as people. Activities such as human bingo, scenario discussions, the identity wheel and trust games will provide opportunities for students to build relationships, celebrate similarities and individualism. They’ll also learn about their rights and responsibilities in a range situations, which covers how they can expect to be treated by others, as well as how they are expected to treat others.
REMINDERS:
Students have been busy performing on stage and celebrating their hard work of learning their dances. It was brilliant watching their excitement as they entered backstage and performing together on stage with the finale.
Maths exploration has continued with location and transformation, students have learnt how to read and analyse maps, using directional language.
Our reading focus has been on inferring, as students use their prior knowledge and identify text clues to make an inference. Literature discussions will also finish this week and begin again in Term 4.
Science is an exciting curriculum area for all students and this week, students reflected on their experiments and knowledge gained from Beneath Out Feet.
Have a great holiday,
Grade 3/4 Team
Over the past week, the grade 3/4 students have been very excited putting the final touches on their items for the whole school production. Last Wednesday, we had our first Whole School Rehearsal and we cannot wait to perform for our school community in just over a week’s time!
In Writing, we have continued focusing on Poetry. The students have been looking at various types of poetry, including Cinquains and Haikus. In Maths, we have begun a new unit, Location and Transformation, which will take us through to the end of the term. We will be looking at the transformation of shapes as well as learning about how to interpret maps. To celebrate the end of our Science unit, Beneath our Feet, students attended the a Soil Safari incursion this week run by CERES. Check out the fun we had below!
REMINDERS:

The Grade 3/4 Team
Last Thursday 41 Grade 3/4 students competed in the Hoop Time Basketball Competition at Nunawading Basketball Stadium. There were 5 teams, with all players showing brilliant sportsmanship, and having a smile on their face all day. It was exciting to see all students enjoy playing basketball and developing their skills during each game. All teams won all their games (unfortunately the All Stars Boys lost their grand final) and finished first in their group category. Congratulations to the All Star Boys making it to the grand final and to both the Future Star teams who will go to the regional finals next term. It was so lovely to see teams cheering and supporting each other. A big thank you to Andrew Watt, Anthony Grace, Amanda Ferreira, Tracy Wilks, Anna Hemingway, Zarah Boyd, Kim Coulson, Tarryn Kidner and Lauren Madeley for all their help on the day, either coaching or scoring. And thank you to all the parents that came along to cheer on the students during the day. We had an awesome day!

In reading, students have been focusing on the comprehension strategy of Determining Importance. Here students develop and strengthen their ability to pull apart a text by locating important events and themes as opposed to those that do not contribute greatly to the text. Students have enjoyed harnessing this in their independent and guided reading.
To celebrate Book Week, Buddies activities were focused around sharing favourite books with other students or completing learning tasks centered on award winning titles. Students enjoyed sharing their love of reading and discussing texts with their peers, a wonderful way to celebrate books!
Fractions has been the focus in Mathematics, with students exploring fraction, decimal and percentage notation. Hands on learning enables students to explore their reasoning and discuss concepts learnt and consolidated.
Students have begun learning about poetry in writing. They have been exploring different types of poetry and associated conventions, structure and how themes and ideas aim to provide enjoyment for the reader. Students have found it interesting to read such a diverse range of poetry and examine their unique qualities.

- District Athletics Tuesday 4th September
- Production Rehearsal Wednesday 5th September
The last few weeks we have finished writing and presenting our Information Reports. The standard was outstanding and it has been wonderful learning from each other’s research. We are excited to commence our Poetry Unit where students read poems, analyse different forms of poetry and enjoy creating their own poems. We will also have a “Poem in a Pocket Day” later in the term so stay tuned!
We have been loving Book Week in 3/4 and have really enjoyed reading the short-listed books, as well as completing and viewing the door displays. Make sure you come to the deck and have a look if you haven’t already.
In conjunction with the 40 Hour Famine – A Day Without, which all classes completed last Friday, the grade 3/4 chose something else that they would go without for homework. We had students choose to go with things like technology, sweets and furniture (which made for a very interesting classroom environment). We’re looking forward to sharing our experiences with each other.
Hoop Time is next Thursday the 30th of August and we are fully immersed in training. Come down to The Rings if you’d like to cheers APPS on. We wish all our Grade 3/4 students competing a fun and hopefully successful day.
Production too is well underway and we can’t wait for week 10. If you haven’t already, please send in your costumes.
This week in our Writing sessions, 3/4 students are writing information reports about locations and landmarks around Australia.
This compliments the work that students are doing in our Inquiry Unit, a geography unit learning all about Australia.
In Reading this week, 3/4 students have been focusing on Visualisation, and developing mental pictures of text they're reading.
Students are also reading longer novels as part of Literature Circles, where some wonderful discussing has been happening. Students each have a role to play in their group and assisting with each other's understanding of the text is a vital component of working with a small group.
It's all about Fractions for the next 3 weeks in 3/4. Students are learning all about fractions, whether they're finding fraction values of whole numbers, adding and subtracting common fractions, investigating what happens when the denominator gets smaller, or even working with fractions with different denominators - it's some of the more challenging work that we do in Maths in 3/4! There's plenty of activities, investigations and games to help with our learning.
Earlier in the year, our Grade 4s were involved in the annual Attitudes to School Survey. This week, students have been able to share further thoughts about their responses.
This information will be terrific for making Antonio Park an even better school!

Week 5:
In Writing, 3/4 students have been working on information reports about Antonio Park PS. These information reports will form a crucial part of building a relationship with our sister school in Jakarta, Indonesia.
Students have been keenly researching our school and have written some very informative and interesting pieces.
3/4 students have also been reading information reports, which has complimented their work in Writing. Students have been focusing on taking meaning from these texts, answering their own questions, completing thinkcharts and learning plenty about our Inquiry topic for Term 3 - Australia.
3/4 students have been learning all about Multiplication & Division. They've learnt about the process for each operation, including what to do when renaming from the ones column to the tens (and so on), and what to do when they can't divide one number by another.
3/4 students have also explored a range of problem solving activities and games that build these skills, and require them to share their thoughts, strategies and reasoning.
