Duration One Unit
Year 10 Humanities incorporates the study of History with Ethical and Cultural capabilities, including depth studies in both the Holocaust and Rights and Freedoms. The course examines how social and political upheavals after World War I acted as a catalyst for global conflict and the genocide of the Holocaust. Students will also explore Australia’s journey from colonial dispossession to landmark reforms such as the 1967 Referendum and the Mabo decision. Through critical readings, primary-source analysis and reflective discussion, students will develop a nuanced understanding of how societies confront injustice, remember trauma, and pursue equity.
Students will study in depth the following topics
The Holocaust - Students will examine the causes of World War II, including the spread of new political ideologies and social changes driven by economic crisis, tracing how these forces enabled state-sponsored persecution and genocide in the Holocaust.
Rights and Freedoms - Students study the significance of the struggle for Indigenous rights in Australia (including the Stolen Generations, the right to vote and land rights) through to present-day outcomes for First Nations Australians.

EAL Humanities
Duration One Unit
Humanities for EAL students aims to aid EAL students in their exploration and understanding of key events in recent history, and how they have helped shape the world of today. In addition, this subject aims to develop students’ English Language skills and seeks to promote confidence and proficiency in English through the content of Humanities.
Students will dive into the post-World War 1 era of Europe, exploring the political and social complexities of the time, and how it contributed to the outbreak of World War Two. Through the analysis of historical sources, they will learn about the events of the Holocaust and explore the history of Australia and First Nations Peoples. Students will be aided in the use of English to express and analyse complex ideas, building their confidence and proficiency in English through the Humanities content.
Selection into this subject is based primarily on teacher recommendation.
Goals
To improve students’ proficiency in English in the areas of listening and speaking, reading and viewing, and writing through the Humanities content
Develop an understanding of key events in the recent history of Australia and the world and their ongoing significance
The ability to effectively analyse historical sources
The ability to think critically about knowledge and ideas
The ability to research effectively and to reference information correctly
Subject Content
Students will study the following topics:
World War Two; students study the causes of World War Two, starting from the end of World War One. Students learn about different ideologies, the role of propaganda and the Holocaust.
Rights and Freedoms; students study the post war civil rights movement and touch on events which shaped the world at that time such as the Cold War. There will be a strong focus on the struggle for Indigenous rights in Australia (including the Stolen Generations, the right to vote and land rights).
Assessment
Students will complete several graded Assessment Tasks. These include written tasks, oral presentations using multi-media, analysis of historical texts, listening tasks and tests.
Students will sit an exam at the end of the semester.
EAL students will also be formally assessed on their progress through Victorian Curriculum in the following areas:
EAL Stages of the Victorian Curriculum in Speaking and Listening, Reading and Viewing, and Writing.
Victorian Curriculum Capabilities: Critical and Creative Thinking skills.
Assessment of language skill development will take place in conjunction with the EAL Core teacher.
Pathways: This subject will support students completing VCE Units 1-4 EAL and VCE Humanities in future studies.
