Newsletter 7th March 2024
Chewton Primary School is situated on Djaara Country.
We acknowledge the Dja Dja Wurrung people, the custodians and caretakers of the land. We thank them for the care they have taken and continue to take of Country: the rivers, mountains, trees and animals. We pay our respects to Elders past, present and emerging. We follow Bunjil's teaching: Care for self, care for others, care for Country.
We commit to Be Brave and Make Change.
We will be a voice for generations.

We have had three school relocations this term due to Extreme Fire Danger Days. While they can be disruptive to our teaching and learning program, they keep us safe in case of a bushfire emergency. We have access to enough air conditioned learning spaces at Castlemaine Primary to ensure your child is able to continue their learning in a comfortable, calm environment. These days usually involve students being indoors throughout lunchtime rather than being out in the hot, windy weather.
Student Support Services have provided us with some resources to assist you in helping your child prepare for these events.
It is really important that your family has a fire plan and talks about it together, so that everyone knows what to do. Please go to the CFA website for lots of practical information.

In an emergency we will send you information via text on the school mobile phone. Please respond to the text sent from our emergency mobile number. If you don't respond we have to call you, and this can cost us valuable time.
If we have to relocate we ask you to respond to the text to say you have received the message, and go to Compass to tell us if your child will attend school that day.
Please follow the instructions on the text and do not pick up your child until directed to. We want to keep everyone safe and need your help to do so.
We are kicking off the fundraising year thinking of Spring!

From day one this year all students have been engaged in learning about our School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) program. In start-up students learnt about the systems of SWPBS that relate to the behaviour expected of them at specific locations within the school, such as at assembly or in the library. From next week students will be explicitly taught about the behaviours we would like to see them practice throughout the school and with each other. All the behaviours taught connect back to our three school values - Community, Kindness, and Respect.
To encourage these behaviours staff will be distributing Value Cards. Value Cards will be handed out both in the classroom and the playground when staff recognise students behaving in the expected way.
Each student will have a folder to collect their cards and once a student receives 20 cards they will be acknowledged with a certificate, badge, and photo at Friday assembly.
In the classroom student Value Cards will be tallied as a class and when the class reaches 100 cards a classroom celebration chosen by the class (think bike ride, dress up day) will take place the following week.
Value Cards will be tallied for the whole school. When the whole school reaches 1000 cards a whole school celebration will take place – again this celebration will be decided by the students.
A reminder that SWPBS encourages each student to do their best but more importantly it is about all students working together to make a healthier and happier classroom and school for all. It is evidence based and has been found to improve behaviour, relationships, and learning.
.
School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS) is a framework that helps schools to plan and imolement practices across the whole school, to improve educational and vehaviour outcomes for all.
This year we are organising a parent group which will organise social gatherings, market stalls, fundraising and make us more visible in the community.
We already have a number of parents involved. If you are interested, please get in touch with us.
