Frequently Asked Questions

Starting school at IEPS

At the start of every year there are always many questions that parents ask teachers. To help you be ready for the new school year, below we have answered a few of these for you:

Where and when do I drop my child off in the mornings?

Children must not be dropped off before 8:45am as this is when teachers begin supervising the yard. At the start of the year you may bring your child directly to the classroom door to help them settle in, however your child’s teacher will allocate a specific lining up spot where you can wait with your child prior to the bell ringing.

Where do I pick up my child from at the end of the day?

At the start of the year we welcome you to come to the classroom door to collect your child at the end of the day. However, this also creates quite a bit of congestion in the passage way. Once your child is feeling confident we encourage you to negotiate a separate meeting spot for them to meet you at. Often this will be the deck area or the friendship tree.

When does the take home book program begin?

The take home book program will begin in March. More information on what this program is and how to best help your child with it will be provided before it commences.

How are allergies dealt with at school?

Students with allergies are taken very seriously at Ivanhoe East Primary School. If your child has allergies, you will have an opportunity to meet with our wonderful school nurse Hilda to discuss their individual needs. These children will have a special ‘treat box’ provided by their parents, which will be kept within the classroom for when there are birthday treats handed out by other children. We also uphold a strict ‘no sharing food’ policy within the school. All of the IEPS teachers are fully anaphylaxis trained.

Please contact the school nurse Hilda if your child has any medical concerns - hilda.hallinan@education.vic.gov.au

School Uniform

The Ivanhoe East Primary School uniform is compulsory and can be purchased from PSW in Kew East. There are many uniform options available so that our students are comfortable throughout the school day. Please label your child’s uniform so that it can be returned to them if it is misplaced.

Volunteering at IEPS

There are many opportunities for parents and carers to volunteer in the school. In order to volunteer, there are some minimum requirements.

The Working With Children Check

All volunteers must have a current Working With Children Check. The Working With Children Check is a minimum checking standard set by the Working with Children Act 2005 for those who work with children, either on a paid or voluntary basis. To be a volunteer at a school a Working with Children Card provided by the Department of Justice is required.

This card is:

• valid for 5 years

• transferable between volunteer organisations

• free of charge for volunteers, but cannot be used for paid employment.

You can apply online using this link:

http://www.workingwithchildren.vic.gov.au/home/applications/

When you have received your card, please bring it to the office so that we can make a copy and inform the class teacher.

Parent Helpers

Every term your classroom teacher will provide opportunities for parents and carers to volunteer to help in the classroom. All parent helpers MUST have completed the Classroom Helpers’ Program to be conducted in February (watch out for communication re this viaCompass).
