Prep Team Report:
Wow! What a great time we have had in Term 1! We have enjoyed celebrating Harmony Day, Athletics Day and Cross Country and we are looking forward to the Easter Hat Parade.
In Literacy, the preps have made great progress with their reading and writing! We have learnt 16 sounds and we are learning to blend the sounds to read words and sentences. The students are using their sound-letter correspondence to write words with a CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) pattern for example, sat, not, big, vet. In our English unit, we have been reading Fables and learning about the moral of the stories.
In Numeracy, we have continued to learn about numbers while counting how many days we have been at school. We are all very excited to celebrate when we reach 100 days! We have continued to learn how to accurately count collections and read, write, and order numbers to 20. The preps have learnt about 2D and 3D shapes, we have learnt to name circles, triangles, squares, rectangles, spheres, cubes, cylinders, and cones and identify their features.
In Humanities, we have been learning about Australia. We have investigated native Australian animals and plants and decorated our own Australia and Indigenous Australia flag. In Science, we have been investigating the five senses. In Wellbeing, we have continued to explore our emotions.
We can’t believe term 1 is almost over! We have so many exciting things to look forward to in term 2 including an Incursion with the Flying Bookworm Theatre Company to learn about stories, a Bunnings Incursion for a special secret Mother’s Day surprise and School photos.

Year 1/2 Team Report:
Students in Year 1/2 have continued with their great start to 2022 and have learned so much!
We would like to send a warm welcome to our new students in the grade 1/2 community. It has been great to see how well they've settled in over the past couple of weeks and that our existing students happily welcomed them.
In Reading, we have been following the Sounds-Write program where students are learning different sounds and spellings, and both grade one and grade two students have been learning about sounds that have different spellings.
Here the students are echo reading to practice their fluency.
In Writing, students have learned how to expand sentences to give more information using the question words when, who, what, why, where, and how. Grade one students have learned about similar folktales that originate from different countries such as Thumbelina from Denmark and Issun Boshi from Japan, while the grade two students have continued learning about Greek Myths.
In Numeracy, our focus for the whole term has been place value and the students have been developing their number facts and learning strategies to support them with addition and subtraction problems.
In Humanities, grade one students have been learning about Ancient Mesopotamia, including the importance of rivers in communities, how laws were created, and how they communicated using cuneiform. Students in grade two have been learning about Gods and Goddesses and how the Ancient Greeks worshipped many Gods and Goddesses, and that the twelve they believed lived on Mount Olympus, were the most powerful.
In Science, students in both grade one and two have continued exploring Physical Sciences. Grade one students have continued exploring Light and Sound and have enjoyed learning how sound can travel through string as they experimented with paper cup and string phones. Grade two students have been learning about Pushes and Pulls and exploring different ways to move objects.
We, as a team, want to commend the whole cohort on their hard work during Term 1. It has been fantastic to see students working so well together and we look forward to Term 2.

Year 3/4 Team Report:
The grade 3/4 students have had an extremely busy term and are looking forward to a well-earned break over the school holidays.
We are finishing up all our Term One units and can’t believe just how much we have learned this term. In English, we unpacked a range of Dreamtime stories and found the use of symbols in the artwork to be particularly fascinating. Through our book study on ‘Brown Girl Dreaming’ we looked at the American Civil Rights movement and discussed racism and prejudices. Students had a lot of great conversations about important historical figures such as Rosa Parks and Ruby Bridges and how their actions made a positive impact on others.
In Humanities, we were extremely lucky to have an Indigenous Australian artefact kit delivered by the Melbourne Museum. Inside it there were a range of interesting items such as a boomerang, marngrook, ochre paint, stone axe head, message stick and a possum skin that we discovered was often used to make a cloak. It was so good to be able to hold and feel these items to get a better understanding of how ingenious they were.
In Science, we have been looking at how fossils are formed and how they provide important information about how they world was in the past. Throughout this term we have also learned about how animals habitats are impacted by natural events such as floods and bushfires or by human actions such as building roads and towns or pollution.
The 3-6 Athletics Day was a big success, and it was so good to see the students in a different setting. Students happily tried a range of events and thanks to Miss Mackie’s excellent P.E. lessons, students all felt confident no matter the event.
Cross Country was also a great morning and students all pushed themselves to achieve their best and support one another.
Have a great holiday everyone.

Year 5/6 Team Report:
What a fantastic first term the 5/6s have had! It certainly has been a busy one, both in and out of the classroom. This term we announced our School Captains and Vice Captains, cheered those students that represented Eynesbury Primary School in volleyball, tennis and cricket at the inter-school summer sports event and celebrated everyone's effort during our 3-6 School Sports Day. We are so proud of all our athletes!
In the classroom, students have been enthusiastic spelling detectives during our structured word-inquiry sessions and are continually building on their understanding of the code of English for accuracy when reading and spelling. When reading, we have been exploring how emphasising different words can change the meaning of a sentence and when writing, we have been working on ensuring our handwriting is legible and consistent.
In Maths, students are working on automatically knowing their multiplication facts to support fast and accurate calculations. Students have also been converting between millimetres, centimetres, and metres, and using these units of measurement when calculating the length and perimeter of given shapes.
In Science, students made a photosynthesis model to demonstrate their understanding of how plants grow, building on their learning they researched further and gave an oral presentation to explain the transfer of energy between organisms located in a given habitat, including identifying if their assigned organism was a producer, consumer or scavenger. In Humanities, students have continued to learn about Australia’s early history, including the significance of Mungo Man, the role of the American War of Independence, the journey of the First Fleet and the impact of its arrival on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
We congratulate all our students on their hard work and wish everyone a wonderful holiday break.

STEM Report:
This has been an immensely busy term for all specialist areas, with STEM in particular being jam-packed with new learning, skills and problems to address.
Our Prep and Grade 1 students have been learning about Minibeasts in STEM. Within this unit of work, they have dived into the world of these awesome little legends and investigated how they live and thrive.
Grade 2 students on the other hand are completing an Animal Architects unit where they investigate the different animal habitats around the world. Specifically, they have been focused on how these habitats help each animal living there both flourish and thrive.
Grade 3/4 students are learning about the world. To do so, they will complete a research project on a country, and then investigate and design a landmark of great significance to that country. The final step will be the creation of this landmark in Minecraft Education.
Finally, our Grade 5/6 students are investigating electricity. They will create a steadiness tester, as well as a fully operational alarm system that sounds when a door is opened as part of the application of the knowledge and skills they have learnt previously.
We are looking forward to further developing student learning in Term 2. In the meantime, we wish you a wonderful Term 1 break.

Visual Art Report:
What’s been happening in the Art Room this term?
Prep
Students in Prep have been investigating different media and techniques. We have learnt about different types of lines and colour. We have used pastels with watercolour paints to create resist paintings and have practised cutting and pasting. We combined all of our new skills to create an underwater scene in warm and cool colours, inspired by ‘The Rainbow Fish’.
Year 1-2
Students in Years 1 and 2 have been learning about landscape painting. They have mixed primary colours to create secondary colours and used black and white to create tints and shades. Students have learnt that different brushstroke techniques create different effects. Students completed guided paintings, and learnt the importance of painting the background first. Using the techniques, we have worked on in class, students have created some amazing landscape paintings.
Year 3-4
Students in Year 3/4 have been working on their modelling techniques. Students designed a ‘me-bird’ that tells their viewer a little about themselves. They have then created a papier mache model of the bird they designed. Each bird is holding an item that reflects the interests of the artist.
Year 5-6
Students in Year 5/6 have been using oil pastels to create silhouette drawings. They have been using their understanding of the colour wheel to create a colour co-ordinated background. They have identified a light source and ensured that their colour transitions from light to dark. Students have created some spectacular drawings that are currently adorning our office walls.

PE Report:
Students this term in PE focused on the different events and skills needed for athletics. Students then put these skills to the test during our Athletics days for both Year 3-6 and Prep-Year 2 where they competed in events such as high jump, shot put, triple jump, to name just a few. It was wonderful to see all the students giving their all and having so much fun during these days. Congratulations to Goodes House (yellow) who came away with the win in both carnivals.
Students throughout the term also focused on building their running stamina in the lead up to Cross Country. Through this practice, students were able to show great improvement which was evident on the day of the Cross Country. Congratulations to all students for their participation and achievement in these milestone events.
Looking forward to further putting these new found skills to the test in Term 2.
