The Chewton CFA Brigade and local Red Cross volunteers are working with Claire Collie, from Safer Together, to raise awareness in the community around risk reduction and preparedness. With a changing climate, and the ever-present potential for fires, floods and storms, it is vital that there is a space for people to connect with others to plan towards community-based risk reduction and enhanced resilience. We are seeking other community members with an interest in this area, and a keenness to engage in conversations around disaster risk and resilience. Please get in touch with Claire if you would like to be involved, or seek more information (Claire.collie@cfa.vic.gov.au ; 0427 227 868)
As part of our learning in Numeracy at Chewton we have a rich and authentic task each term. A rich and authentic task is a question or wondering where students apply what they have learnt to an engaging and purposeful real-world problem. This term students investigated what it would be like to be a town planner and an architect when designing their dream town and house.
After learning about basic maps and their features students created their own town using a grid reference map. Students explored the wondering of what a town planner would need to consider when designing a place its residents could access services and live a healthy lifestyle in their town.
Students then went on to investigate the use of floor plans when designing a house or building. Grade 3/4’s designed their own floor plan for their dream house by drawing on their learning of multiplication facts to help them find the area of different rooms and total floor space.
In grade 3 and 4, students learn about how to identify the features of three-dimensional shapes and create 3D shapes from nets. Students explored the question of how to create a 3D model of a room from their dream house. After constructing their room, they found the volume of their model they had created.
It has been great to see grade 3/4 students apply their mathematical knowledge to solve a wondering!
Grade 5/6 enjoyed going to CSC to watch a year 8 drama performance.
It was a detective thriller, with lots of laughs and intrigue!
Congratulations to all our 5-6 students who participated in the Chess tournament this week in Castlemaine. The chess tournament was terrific, Chewton PS should be really proud of the kids who went along. The room was absolutely packed, kids from Bendigo, Ballarat and all around. Well done everyone and thanks to Kez, Lorenzo and Jonathon for supervising and supporting on the day!
The Year 2 students had a fabulous time on camp. The wet weather did not deter them from enjoying all the experiences that were on offer.

I'm riding 500ks in 30 days to raise money for the starlight Foundation who help sick kids in hospital have a happier time.
I've been doing pretty simple rides to get the k's but there have still been some challenges, such as rain, sun and fitting it around school!
Today is day 15 and I've ridden 225 ks and I've raised $285. I want to raise $500 or $750 and help about 50 kids. The longest ride I've done so far was to Maldon and back which got me around 45ks.

The thylacine by Oscar
The ancient thylacine roared
over the ancient land
under the cabbage palm, a den, a thylacine den
two pups, one week old barely opened their eyes
feeding on their mothers milk a brown bandicoot searching for food in the moonlight
The soft moon beams shine on the quokkas fur
under the cabbage palm tree
in my front yard
sugar gliders glide through the moonlight beams stroking the dingos back like a peaceful river flowing down a snowy mountain range
a roar shatters the peace
a thylacine under a ghost gum the generation has started
again
