Each sporting competition will adopt a certain style of competition. The draw will also be constructed in a set style to cater to the style of competition being used.
Types of competition
There are different types of competition that will be used depending on the sport, the age and the ability of the players. These include round robin, ladder and knock out competitions.
Round robin competitions
Round robin competitions involve a team playing all other teams in their competition at least once. The winner of the competition can be decided by the team with the most competition points at the conclusion of the final round or the top teams being involved in a post-season knockout competition.
Advantages of round robin competitions include:
-maximises participation
-allows for teams having ‘off’ days
-one of the fairest ways to determine an overall champion
Disadvantages of round robin competitions include:
-usually take longer to complete
-more facilities are required
-can’t accommodate a large number of teams
Knockout competitions
Knockout competitions are one of the most well-known and popular tournaments used by organisers. In a knockout tournament the winner progresses in the competition and the loser is eliminated. Knockout competitions work well in post-season play off formats and after round robin competitions are played.
Advantages of knockout competitions include:
-simplest tournament to conduct
-can be conducted with limited facilities
-can accommodate a large number of entries the most appropriate for a one-day event they determine a champion in the shortest
-time frame
Disadvantages of knockout competitions include:
-do not promote participation
-may not represent the best individual or team if seeding has not been used
-place emphasis on victory
-provide least flexibility for participants
Ladder competitions
The aim of ladder competitions is to reach and secure the top of the ladder by defeating challenging opponents or teams. All competitiors or teams are ranked on a ladder, with competitiors swapping places depending on results. Ladder competitions allow all competitiors to play for the entire competition, despite their success and position on the ladder.

Draw Construction
Draw construction relates to the way the draw is designed to promote participation. There are different types of draw construction, including handicapping, seeding, promotion/ relegation and repechage.
Handicapping
Handicapping is used in sport to equal the chances of winning. It is the practice of assigning an advantage through scoring compensation or other means. Usually, a more experienced individual or team is handicapped to allow less experienced competitors the chance to compete on a balanced level. Handicapping is used in sports such as sailing, golf and horse racing.
Seeding
Seeding is used to prevent top teams being eliminated during early stages of a competition. The main component of seeding is setting up ‘brackets’ to ensure top teams or individuals don’t meet until final rounds. Seeding is commonly used in knockout and pool tournaments.
Promotion / relegation
Promotion / relegation is used to provide fair competition by introducing divisions to cater for all involved participants and teams. Local sporting clubs with numerous teams often place players and teams in different divisions based on their sporting abilities.
Repechage
Repechage is a term used to explain when teams of individual competitors miss out on qualifying by a small margin and are given a second chance to qualify. Repechage is used in a number of sports, including track and field athletics, sailing, cycling and rowing. Typically, after a round of competition, the winner of each heat will progress to the next round. When repechage is used, players who come second
and have a very close score to the winner will be placed into a secondary heat where they verse other competitors with similar results. They compete for the chance to fill the remaining spots in the next round of events.
Event Management
Event management involves creating, developing and managing various events in sport. Event management is a growing field, outside of and within the sporting sector.
Types of events
There are many different types of events that a sports administrator can be asked to manage. Each different type may have its own unique organisation and purpose. Generally, the organiser will need to organise a team, allocate roles, consider catering and venue hire, set dates, allocate resources and communicate to all stakeholders.
Carnivals
Athletics, cross-country and swimming carnivals are the classic events that are held within schools. Each carnival is unique in the number, type and structure of the events offered. There are three common ways of structuring these events:
The traditional carnival: Typically, this carnival enables students to enter as many or as few events as they like. The main disadvantage of the traditional carnival is its lack in promoting participation. For example, an individual who is a poor swimmer can choose not to participate in swimming based events.
The tabloid carnival: In a tabloid carnival, participants are divided into teams and rotate through a number of activities. Emphasis is placed on all participants being actively involved. Ideally, all participants are challenged.
The novelty carnival: In this carnival, traditional events are partially or totally replaced by novelty events. The most suitable carnival is dependent on a number of factors including:
– the type of carnival (athletics / swimming)
– the age of the competitors
– the number of participants
– the ability level of the competitors
Competitions
Competition events are designed to be challenging and to end with at least
one winner or more, depending on the size of the event. Round robins, pool
tournaments and knock out tournaments are all examples of competition events.
These are often based specifically on one event or sport and rounds or games of
that sport are played until a final winner is reached. The focus on competition is to
be the best and play the best, and therefore weaker players may sometimes be
knocked out early or not given much competing time. These types of events require lots of pre-event planning. Draws and divisions (if necessary) need to be created.
Corporate events
A range of companies organise corporate sporting events where employees participate. Such events promote health as well as encouraging fun, interaction and bonding between employees.
Community events
Community events are developed by councils and community organisations designed to raise money or raise awareness of facilities available in a local area.
