Week 7 & 8
Thank you
I want to take a moment to thank all of our wonderful families and students for the kindness and support you've shown while I’ve been managing life in a moon boot. Your warm wishes, thoughtful questions, and check-ins from students—asking how my leg is or if I’m doing okay—have truly lifted my spirits.
We really do have a special school community here at Appin, filled with caring, thoughtful students and incredibly supportive families. I do apologise for not being at the gate as often as I’d like—rest assured, once this boot is off, I’ll be back out there greeting you all properly (on two legs!).
Staff Update 🌟
Both Laura Morgan and Ellie Oliver are beginning a very special new adventure—motherhood! We are thrilled for them as they prepare to welcome their little ones and send them all our love, support, and warm wishes for this beautiful journey ahead as they both start their maternity leave.
Meanwhile, Donna Thomson will be taking some well-deserved leave to escape the winter chill and enjoy some time travelling—we hope she has a relaxing and refreshing break. While she’s away, Kate Kelly will be stepping into the STEM and Library role, bringing her usual creativity and energy and beutiful smile to those spaces.

Our Kindergarten students are quickly approaching a very special milestone—101 Days of Learning! To mark the occasion, we’ll be celebrating in true dalmatian style, with this year’s theme inspired by 101 Dalmatians.
We can’t wait to see our adorable little “Kindy puppies” dressed up and full of excitement as we honour their incredible learning journey so far. It’s sure to be a tail-wagging good time!
Camden Network Learning Walks at Appin PS
This week, Appin Public School proudly hosted principals from across the Camden Network, along with our Director, as part of the Camden Network Learning Walks. It was a wonderful opportunity to showcase the incredible work happening across our school.
We shared our co-teaching model, the ways we are supporting High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE), and how we’re delivering differentiated, explicit teaching to meet the diverse needs of our learners. Our visitors were also able to explore our data tracking systems before heading into classrooms to see our amazing teachers and students in action.
A huge thank you to our staff and students for so beautifully representing Appin PS—you made us proud!
Leading with Heart
This week, I had the privilege of joining our local principals at the Campbelltown PPC Conference, themed Heroic Leadership. Day 1 was especially inspiring, thanks to an unforgettable session with Bruce Sullivan—an award-winning speaker known for his warmth, wisdom, and humour. Bruce spoke beautifully about the power of connection, resilience, and staying true to our purpose in both leadership and life.
I’d love to share this thought he left us with: "The most heroic thing we can do each day is show up with kindness, courage, and care—for ourselves, and for those around us."
It was a powerful reminder of what truly matters, and why we do what we do in schools like ours.
A Big Thank You to Our P&C
We’d like to send a heartfelt thank you to our incredible P&C for their ongoing support, generosity, and tireless efforts behind the scenes. Whether it's helping fund resources, organising events, or simply being a voice for our families, their commitment to our school community is deeply appreciated.
Appin Public School is all the richer because of the strong partnerships we have with our parents and carers—thank you for all that you do!
Have a great weekend.

Stage Snapshot – Learning in Stage 3
In English, we have been exploring our mentor text 'Spotlight', written by Australian teenager, Solli Raphael. We have been reading and analysing poetry, specifically limericks and sonnets. Students have been exploring rhyme scheme, as well as syllables required per line of each style of poem. This has encouraged students to express their creativity through writing.
In mathematics, we are exploring 3D objects, including nets, pyramids, and prisms, while also learning about volume and capacity, which has been an engaging experience for the students.
Students are particularly enjoying the poetry unit, where they have the opportunity to create their own limericks and sonnets. Their enthusiasm for writing has led to some impressive, humourous and imaginative pieces. In maths, students are showing great interest in hands-on activities that involve constructing and visualising three-dimensional objects.
We have introduced several innovative tools and approaches to enhance student learning. In our exploration of sonnets, we have been examining iambic pentameter, and Ms. Paxton shared a clever technique she uses: clicking every second syllable in each line to emphasise the stressed beats. This engaging method not only helps students understand the rhythm of poetry but also allows them to appreciate the musicality of language.

Stage Snapshot – Learning in Stage 2
Exploring Poetry through Bindi by Kirli Saunders
This term in English, Stage 2 students have been diving into the powerful and poetic world of Bindi by Kirli Saunders. As part of our learning, we’ve been exploring the rich features of poetry, including personification, rhyming couplets, and similes. We’ve been discovering how these poetic devices help bring writing to life and keep readers engaged.
Students have been learning how to use imagery, symbolism, and connotation to create meaning in their own writing. We’ve also looked closely at how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander authors, like Kirli Saunders, weave these elements into their texts to express culture, connection, and Country.
One of the highlights has been experimenting with free verse poetry—poems that don’t rhyme but flow with natural speech and allow full expression of thoughts and emotions. It has been a wonderful opportunity for students to let their creativity shine.
We are so proud of the insightful and imaginative pieces our students are producing and can’t wait to share more of their writing with you soon!
Exploring 3D Objects and Measurement in Mathematics
In Mathematics, Stage 2 students have been investigating three-dimensional objects and the features that make them unique. We’ve been learning to identify and describe the faces, edges, and vertices of a range of 3D shapes. To support our understanding, students created hands-on models that clearly show these features.
Using isometric paper and the correct mathematical tools, students then developed their skills by sketching 3D objects, paying close attention to accurate measurements and angles. This hands-on and visual learning approach has helped students deepen their spatial awareness and geometry skills.
As we move forward, our focus is shifting to volume and capacity. Students will explore different ways to measure these concepts using appropriate units and tools. Through a range of practical activities, they’ll develop a solid understanding of measurement and how it applies to real-world contexts.
We’re excited to continue building our mathematical thinking through hands-on and meaningful experiences!
Co teaching with Mr Bax
This term, Stage 2 has been fortunate to take part in a co-teaching model alongside Mr Bax. This collaborative approach has allowed teachers to work together to support student learning in both Mathematics and English. With two teachers in the classroom, we’ve been able to provide more targeted, individualised instruction that meets the diverse needs of our learners.
By differentiating content and instruction, students are receiving additional guidance, small group support, and tailored learning tasks that match their individual abilities and goals. This team-teaching approach is helping to build student confidence, deepen understanding, and create a positive and inclusive learning environment for all.

Leadership Focus – Attendance at Appin 🎯
At Appin PS, we are passionate about ensuring all of our students are at school, every day, ready to learn and grow. Regular attendance plays a vital role in every child’s learning journey and long-term success.
Each week, I meet with our Home School Liaison Officer (HSLO) to review attendance patterns and identify any students who may need additional support. I will be contacting families whose children have been highlighted, so we can work together to understand any challenges and find positive solutions to support consistent attendance.
At the end of the term, students with low attendance will receive a letter outlining their attendance patterns. This process aligns with our School Excellence Plan and supports the Premier’s Priorities, which focus on improving student engagement and educational outcomes across NSW.
Thank you for your ongoing support in helping every student be present, every day—it really does make a difference.
Stage Snapshot – Learning in ES1
Phonics is the method of teaching reading that focuses on the relationship between sounds (phonemes) and their corresponding letters or letter combinations (graphemes). This approach helps children decode words, making it easier for them to read and spell effectively. It is the foundation for reading, improves spelling and enhances comprehension.
To assist you in supporting your child's phonics learning, we have sent home a phonics recording and a resource pack. We encourage you to explore these resources and incorporate them into your daily routine. Consistent practise will help strengthen your child's phonics skills and build their confidence in reading.
This term in science, Kindergarten students are learning all about the material world. Understanding the properties of materials and how they influence their use is a fundamental aspect of science that impacts our everyday lives. Through hands-on activities and experiments, our students will gain a deeper understanding of this concept, exploring how different materials can be applied to solve real-world problems. By fostering curiosity and critical thinking, we aim to inspire the next generation of scientists and innovators. This week in Cromer, students went on a classroom hunt finding different objects in the classroom that were made from a class made list of the main materials - wood, metal, plastic and fabric. Students were very engaged and enthused during this lesson!

Leadership Focus – Early Intervention, Transition & Integration
Transitioning from preschool to school is a significant step in a child’s journey. Establishing strong connections between these settings is vital for creating a cohesive learning experience. We recognise the importance of building relationships with daycare services, as they play a pivotal role in the lives of many children. Here are some ways we are actively working to strengthen these connections:
Collaborative Partnerships: We are reaching out to local day care providers to establish or maintain partnerships that facilitate open communication and collaboration. By sharing insights about each child’s development, we can create a comprehensive support system that extends from preschool and into school.
Shared Programs and Activities: We plan to organise joint activities that involve children from preschool and school. These experiences will help familiarise children with the different environments, making transitions smoother and more comfortable. We will be welcoming preschoolers from our local daycares into our library in Term 3 and will have a Kindergarten teacher visiting daycares to read stories.
Family Involvement: Involving families in the transition process is crucial. We will provide resources and host informational sessions for parents, helping them understand the importance of continuity in their child’s education and how they can support their children through this journey. We are in the very early stages of planning these sessions.
Recently one of our Learning Portfolio teachers left for maternity leave and we have another teacher joining her in their journey into motherhood. We have therefore, reshuffled our Learning Portfolio teachers to be more closely aligned with the co-teachers for each stage. Over the following weeks, these teachers have each made contact with families to introduce themselves and begin building the ever so important relationship between home and school.
If you know anyone who will be joining us in 2026, please ensure you ask them to complete an online enrolment so they can be added to our mailing list as we continue to make these plans.

On Friday the 30th of May, some of the students were lucky enough to go Wests Leagues Club for the Young Champions Awards. I was lucky to be one of the students going that night. The whole experience was great seeing all the wonderful dances and people getting their awards. I was a bit sad that I did not win but you can't win everything. I was really proud of how I did and proud of my peers.
Meils B
On Friday it was the Macarthur Young Champion Awards. I attended with Mum and Great Grandma. I felt nervous but excited when we arrived and after I received my medal I was more in my element. Since I’m gluten free, I brought sausages and bread in my handbag. My class thought that was funny. When we left, I was drained and in need of a good sleep.

They have written some incredible poems that showcase not only their growing writing skills but also their ability to express emotions and ideas in powerful and imaginative ways.
In Mathematics, we have been learning about position and three-dimensional shapes. The students have had fun giving and following directions using positional language, creating maps, and even navigating small obstacle courses. When exploring 3D shapes, students investigated the properties of objects, constructed models, and identified shapes in their everyday environment.
During Physical Education, our class has been participating in a gymnastics program that has built both skills and confidence. Students have learned to balance, roll, jump, and land safely. It has been wonderful to see each student challenge themselves and support one another as they tried new movements and improved their coordination and control.
In Visual Arts, each student created their own unique artwork inspired by the theme of bushfires. Using a combination of water paints, oil pastels, and permanent markers, students explored how to blend colour, create contrast, and add fine detail to represent the movement and intensity of fire in the Australian landscape.
It’s been a fantastic term of growth and creativity, and we look forward to continuing this exciting learning journey together!
Focus for this week - Days Lost
Subject: Attendance Update and Monitoring
Regular school attendance is vital for student success. Every day a student misses is a lost opportunity for learning, growth, and connection. Consistent attendance helps build strong routines, improves academic outcomes, and fosters a sense of belonging in the school community. By attending school regularly, students are better prepared for future learning and life beyond the classroom.
Subject: Prompt Response to Attendance Notifications
To help us maintain accurate attendance records, please ensure you respond to any messages sent via School Bytes as soon as possible. Timely responses allow us to appropriately justify absences in accordance with the school's attendance policy.
If you're unsure of the steps to take when your child is absent from school, please refer to the document below for clear guidance and instructions. It also states what is a justified and unjustified absence. For any further information please contact the school.
What is Rule of the Week?
At our school, we are committed to supporting all students to follow our school rules so we can create a positive, safe and supportive learning environment where every child has the opportunity to succeed. Each week, we focus on a Rule of the Week as part of our whole school Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) approach.
These weekly focus rules aren’t chosen at random - they are thoughtfully selected based on behaviour data we collect across the school. We regularly analyse this data and have conversations with teachers about the trends they’re noticing in both the classroom and playground. This process helps us identify areas where students may need extra support, reminders, or positive reinforcement around our behaviour expectations.
Once we have identified a focus area, we link it to our school values — Safe, Respectful, Learner — and use our PBL Language Matrix, a tool filled with consistent language, to select a rule that promotes the behaviour we want to see more of.
The Rule of the Week is then unpacked in classrooms where teachers discuss with students what it looks, sounds and feels like in different areas of the school. The rule is regularly revisited throughout the week during lessons, on the playground and at assemblies to support students in making positive behaviour choices.
Previous Rule of the Weeks include:
§ Learner: Show resilience
§ Safe: Move safely around our school
§ Learner: Ask for help or assistance if you need it
§ Respectful: Use your manners
§ Respectful: Include others in the classroom and playground
§ Respectful: Use ‘NO, GO, TELL’ if someone is bothering you
§ Respectful: Follow instructions the first time
§ Safe: Keep hands, feet and objects to yourself

Wellbeing Facilitators
Last week, the student Wellbeing Facilitators met with Caroline, our Wellbeing Officer along with Mrs Collins and Mrs Mathers to begin the planning stages of a lunch time project. This project will take place in the library each Tuesday and Wednesday at lunch. The Wellbeing Facilitators will use their social and emotional skills to help guide our young students in structured play activities. They brainstormed different activities they could provide and discussed conflict resolution strategies that they could use. These students were wise beyond their years as they told us all about how they will get down on the student level, be patient and build relationships as a priority. The group is currently coming up with their own catchy name so keep your eye out for more details. The Wellbeing Facilitators loved their afternoon tea in the staff room with us all!
