Interrelate
Commencing Wednesday, 23 July, 2025 and fully funded by our supportive P&C are two exceptional programs for Stage 3 students. They focus on puberty and the teenage years and ensure that each Stage 3 child receives accurate information on these topics that are often difficult for parents to raise with their children and then discuss. The Year 5 program, for three 90 minute sessions plus student workbook and Year 6 program for three 90 minute sessions, student workbook plus a copy for each student of “100+ Questions Kids Have About Puberty” are being covered by the P&C for which we are very grateful. This means these programs are free to all our Stage 3 students.
Appin Mine Memorial Service
Our choir has been privileged to be invited to perform at the upcoming Appin Mine Disaster Memorial. The Appin Mine disaster is an important part of our community’s history and we are honoured to sing at this year’s memorial. The memorial will be held at the Appin Mine Memorial Garden at Sportsground Parade, Appin on Thursday, 24th July, 2025 at 10:00am.
Students will walk to the site from school, leaving at 9:15am and returning at approximately 11.30am. Please ensure students are wearing their full school uniform with green school hat. Students will be supervised during the memorial by Mr Robert McCloskey. It is expected that all students will behave appropriately for the solemnity and importance of the day.
Walkathon 2025
We are holding our annual Appin Public School Walkathon on Friday, 25th July, 2025.
All of our students will participate by walking around the inside of our school, along paths and gardens and some of our playground as many times as they are able, in the time allocated. They will receive a stamp for each lap they complete. Sponsors may pay children for each completed lap or donate a set amount of money. Stamp cards will be given to students on the day of the walk. Once the walk is finished, simply collect the money from your sponsors and return it to school by Friday 22nd August 2025. Please use your holidays to find your sponsors!! Recess times will be changed to 1.15pm - 1.45pm for this day. Parents are warmly welcome to attend and walk laps with their children from 2pm.
This is a major fundraiser for our school providing much needed additional funding to support the purchase of additional technology for our computer labs.
A $100 gift voucher will be presented to the first five highest fundraisers from K-6. (must raise over $150 to receive a prize). There will also be a “Popcorn and movie at school” prize for the class in Infants and the class in Primary earning the most sponsorship money. There will be incentive prizes as well, for students who return their sponsorship money before the due date. We would appreciate all sponsor money being returned to school by Friday, 22nd August 2025. Our preferred option for payment this year, is through the School Bytes Parent App, using the dropdown box and selecting Walkathon. Simply enter your amount you have collected and process your payment. Thank you.
And that really is a wrap!!
I am absolutely delighted to share that following the merit selection process, I have been appointed as the substantive Principal of Appin Public School. It is an incredible honour to continue leading this wonderful school community. Over the past semester, I have come to know and deeply value the students, staff, and families that make Appin PS so special. I am excited about the journey ahead and look forward to working together to continue building on the school’s strong foundations — nurturing a place where every child feels seen, supported, and inspired to thrive. I am so excited about what our school's future holds together.
Curriculum Policy Monitoring
Last Friday, our school engaged in the Curriculum Policy Monitoring (CPM) process, a valuable opportunity to reflect on our implementation of curriculum policy and ensure alignment with department expectations. A heartfelt thank you to Mrs Hawkins and Mrs Martin for presenting and sharing the incredible teaching and learning practices taking place at Appin PS. I’d also like to thank Mr Earnshaw and Mrs Paxton for observing and supporting the process. It was a collaborative and affirming experience, and I’m proud of the work our team is doing to deliver high-quality learning for every student.
Clarity Workshop
Last week, our executive team had the opportunity to attend the Clarity Workshop with renowned education expert Dr Lyn Sharratt, focused on deepening our understanding of assessment and its impact on student learning. The session explored how schools can use assessment data to drive improvement, inform instruction, and ensure every student is progressing. It was a valuable and thought-provoking experience that reinforced the importance of collective teacher efficacy, data walls, and ongoing professional dialogue. Our team left inspired and ready to bring this learning back to Appin to support continued growth across our classrooms.
Exec Days
Each term, our leadership team participates in two dedicated Executive Days, valuable opportunities to step back, reflect, and ensure that teaching, learning, and improved student outcomes remain at the forefront of everything we do. We began this term’s sessions by exploring emotional intelligence and the importance of leading with values and virtue, grounding our leadership in purpose and compassion. These days were incredibly valuable in strengthening our collective vision and shared commitment. A heartfelt thank you to Mrs Sarah Martin for her thoughtful facilitation and leadership, guiding us through purposeful activities that kept student wellbeing, growth, and success at the centre of every conversation. Her work helped reinforce the power of collective efficacy and leading together with clarity, care, and impact.
Parent teacher Interviews
Early next term, we will be holding Parent-Teacher Interviews on Tuesday 29 July and Wednesday 30 July, between 3:15 pm and 5:15 pm. These short catch-ups are designed to provide an opportunity to connect with your child’s teacher and discuss key areas of their learning. Interviews will be held in the school hall and run in 5–6 minute intervals.
Bookings will open on Tuesday 22 July (the first day of Term 3 for students) and remain open until Friday 25 July. A survey has also been sent home to ask what is most important for families to discuss — we will use this feedback to help guide and focus the interviews.
If you require a longer meeting or are unavailable during the scheduled times, please don’t hesitate to contact the school — we’re happy to arrange a mutually convenient time with your child’s teacher.
It has been an absolute pleasure serving as the relieving principal at Appin Public School over the past semester, and I’m truly looking forward to officially removing the ‘relieving’ and continuing this journey as your substantive principal. We have so much planned for Term 3 — it’s shaping up to be a busy and exciting term, filled with wonderful opportunities and rich learning experiences for our students. I feel incredibly lucky to lead such a vibrant, supportive, and engaged school community. Appin PS is a special place — and I absolutely love being part of it.
Wishing all our families a safe, happy, and restful holiday break. Take time to relax, enjoy special moments together, and we look forward to welcoming everyone back for an exciting Term 3.

Teachers exploring Aboriginal Culture and Histories
It has been a rich term of professional learning here at Appin PS. Recently, our teachers participated in a series focused on the new HSIE K-6 syllabus. This exploration aimed to empower educators with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to effectively implement the syllabus in their classrooms. Through collaborative activities and practical discussions, teachers explored key content areas and developed strategies to create engaging learning experiences for all students.
A significant focus was placed on the importance of connecting with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities, ensuring that their histories and cultures are integrated into our teaching practices. Teachers explored how to translate syllabus content into effective classroom strategies, emphasising these vital connections. They also had the opportunity to authentically discuss ways to incorporate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander priorities and the Ancient Past into their lessons. This professional learning will help ensure that our students receive a rich and meaningful education in HSIE.
Academic Reports
Academic reports for semester one will be sent home this week, and you will notice that we are introducing an updated format aimed at enhancing clarity and accessibility for parents and educators. Developed by the NSW Department of Education in response to valuable feedback, the new format is designed to make reports easier to read and understand while still showcasing your child’s progress across all subject areas. Teacher comments will be provided in English, mathematics, and a general comment section, in accordance with department policy.
For Kindergarten, the general comment will encompass key learning areas such as creative arts, HSIE, PDHPE, and science and technology. A revamped achievement scale and descriptions will give a clearer picture of your child’s progress. We encourage you to engage in parent–teacher interviews in Term 3, which remain a vital opportunity for deeper discussions about your child's achievements.
In this our final edition of the newsletter for Term 2, we reflect on some of Stage 3's achievements.
In English, students have honed their persuasive writing skills, learning to construct compelling arguments and express their opinions with confidence. Their exploration of poetry has allowed them to unleash their creativity, crafting pieces that showcase their voices.
In mathematics, we have made significant progress in understanding 3D objects. Students have enthusiastically learned to identify, estimate, and measure angles through practical activities, becoming adept at using protractors accurately and enhancing their spatial awareness.
Our school community has come together through various events, including the successful Spidey Friday fundraiser, which was one of our Term 1 Parliament motions in action.
Finally, as Mrs. Oliver prepares to embark on an exciting new chapter in her life, we extend our heartfelt thanks for her dedication and support as our Stage 3 co-teacher this semester. Her passion for teaching has made a lasting impact on our school community. We wish her all the best as she embraces motherhood and look forward to welcoming her back when she’s ready.
Wishing you all a restful and enjoyable holiday!

What an incredible Term it has been in Eva, Darling, Hall, and Mulga! We are so proud of the achievements and growth we’ve seen in all our students — not only in their learning but also in their confidence and the strong friendships they have built along the way.
Our students and teachers have demonstrated great determination and enthusiasm in their learning journey. In English, we’ve been honing our creative writing skills, exploring informative texts, and expressing our persuasive side through compelling arguments — including lively debates and persuasive writing pieces about the controversial figure, Ned Kelly. We've also expanded our vocabulary and understanding of spelling through new rules focused on multi-syllabic words.
In Mathematics, students have engaged in a range of hands-on activities to explore the properties of 3D objects, learnt how to tell time, and identified as well as constructed various angles using protractors. We've also deepened our understanding of fractions and decimals. To support this learning, we’ve been using online programs like OnlineMaths and Prodigy, which have encouraged critical thinking and problem-solving. Our teachers have also been running targeted warm-up activities designed to build flexible, creative mathematical minds.
Science this term took us outdoors as we worked together to develop a bee-friendly garden. This project allowed students to explore the vital role bees play in our environment and to think critically about how we can support a healthy ecosystem.
In PDHPE, students have been developing their understanding of game sense — learning how to collaborate, think strategically, and solve problems together through team-based activities and games.
A special highlight this Term has been working alongside Mr Bax, who joined us as a co-teacher. His support in developing differentiated activities and providing small-group instruction has made a positive impact on student learning.
As we look forward to Semester 2, we’re filled with excitement and anticipation for the new adventures ahead. Thank you for your ongoing support — together, we are nurturing learners who are confident, curious, and ready to grow.
Have a wonderful break and we will see you all see you in Term 3!
WHAT WE LOVED MOST ABOUT TERM 2 FROM EVA, DARLING, HALL AND MULGA
Term 2 has been a dynamic and productive term for Stage 1. Students have continued to thrive in our co-teaching model, which has supported differentiated learning and increased engagement across all classes. In English, students explored narrative texts, focusing on character development and using past tense language. In Mathematics, they deepened their understanding of addition and subtraction through problem-solving and explored time and the features of a clock. Across all learning areas, students have shown growth in confidence, collaboration, and independence. We’re proud of their progress and look forward to building on this momentum in Term 3.
Gymtastics has been a highlight for Stage 1 this term, with students eagerly participating each week. The program has supported the development of balance, coordination, strength, and flexibility in a fun and engaging way. Students have shown increased confidence in trying new movements and working as a team. Gymtastics has not only enhanced physical skills but also contributed to improved focus and self-regulation back in the classroom. It’s been a fantastic addition to our Stage 1 program, and the students have thoroughly enjoyed every session.
As we wrap up Term 2, we’d like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all our Stage 1 parents and carers for your continued support. Whether it’s helping with schoolwork, attending events, or staying in regular communication with teachers, your involvement makes a real difference in your child’s learning journey. We truly value the strong partnerships we have with our families and appreciate everything you do to support both your child and our school community. We look forward to continuing this partnership in Term 3.

As we conclude this term, we are excited to celebrate the remarkable growth and achievements of our Kindergarten students. This term has been particularly enriching, as our teaching had a strong focus on explicit teaching and differentiated learning to meet the diverse needs of every child in our classrooms.
Throughout the term, our students engaged in a variety of activities that were tailored to accommodate different learning styles and paces. We have seen each child flourish in their own unique way. Whether through hands-on projects, interactive storytelling, or group discussions, every student has had the opportunity to shine.
We are especially proud of the introduction of individual learning goals around phonics, spelling and early number skills. Teachers set personalised goals for all students that align with their developmental needs, allowing them to take ownership of their learning journey. This approach has not only enhanced their academic achievement but also fostered a sense of pride and accomplishment in their progress.
As we look ahead to Term 3, we are excited about the upcoming 101 days of learning! This milestone presents a wonderful opportunity for our students to celebrate their learning and achievements after 101 wonderful days at Primary School!
We encourage families to continue fostering a love for learning at home. Simple activities, such as reading together, talking with your children throughout their play or exploring early number concepts through play, can reinforce the skills we are developing in the classroom and support your child's ongoing growth.
Thank you for your unwavering support and involvement in your child's educational journey. We wish you a restful break and we look forward to welcoming our students back for another inspiring term of learning and discovery!

NAIDOC Week
NAIDOC Week 2025 @Appin
This week at Appin Public School, we have proudly celebrated 50 years of NAIDOC Week.
We began the week by welcoming Uncle Eddy to our school to lead a Smoking Ceremony, setting a meaningful tone for our celebrations.
Our Cultural Group students and their families were invited to a special morning tea in the staffroom, where Mr Hennessy shared the individual cultural goals and learning portfolios, highlighting the wonderful work the students have been engaged in.
We were also privileged to host Cohen, Mikaya, and Chloe from Campbelltown Performing Arts High School, who performed at our NAIDOC Week assembly. A special mention goes to one of our own students, Kyran, whose moving didgeridoo performance captivated the room.
Throughout the week, classrooms have been exploring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures through art, music, storytelling, and sustainability lessons.
To wrap up a wonderful week of learning and connection, our Cultural Group students will host the Indigenous Games, where each class will learn and play a range of traditional games.
What a fantastic week it has been celebrating culture, history, and community at Appin Public School.

Chess Club - Update
On the 26th of June 2025, selected Year 6 students travelled to Mount Annan Christian College to compete in an inter-school chess competition. All students represented our school with great sportsmanship and skill, each playing a total of seven games. Our team performed exceptionally well, finishing second overall. Well done to all involved!
Congratulations!
A special congratulations to Oscar Wilson, who placed second individually, winning an impressive 6 out of 7 games.
Debating - 30 June, 2025
Congratulations to our two incredible debating teams on their wins in Week 10! The Appin Koalas argued for the idea that school children should help out in the school canteen and impressed the adjudicator with their teamwork, strong points, and confident delivery. Meanwhile, the Appin Waratahs successfully argued against the proposal that parents should pay a fine when children are caught being mean to others. Their thoughtful arguments and persuasive rebuttals led them to victory. Well done to both teams on your outstanding efforts and well-deserved wins!

THE BEAT GOES ON
The Importance of Attendance
Attending school regularly is vital for every child’s learning, social development, and overall success. Consistent attendance helps students establish positive routines, stay connected with friends, and fully engage with the curriculum. Every day at school offers valuable opportunities to build knowledge, skills, and confidence that support long-term growth. On the other hand, frequent absences can create gaps in understanding and limit progress. Being at school every day gives students the best chance to succeed—academically, socially, and emotionally. This term, we congratulate the 221 students who achieved an attendance rate of 90% or higher—well done!
It’s been a busy and productive term in the Positive Behaviour for Learning space at Appin Public School. Our PBL committee has been working to finalise key policies, review our award systems, and plan for some exciting updates in the second half of 2025, with a forward focus on 2026.
This week, Brooke and Mel had the wonderful opportunity to attend a professional learning session in Sydney with The Resilience Project.
The Resilience Project is an evidence based mental health and wellbeing program founded by Hugh van Cuylenburg. It’s designed for schools, workplaces, and communities to help individuals develop positive mental health habits through simple, practical strategies.
At the heart of the program are three key pillars:
Gratitude – focusing on the positives in life
Empathy (Kindness) – understanding and supporting the feelings of others
Mindfulness – being present and aware in the moment
These are collectively known as G.E.M.
Emotional literacy is the ability to recognise, understand, express, and manage emotions in ourselves and others. Supporting our students to build emotional literacy helps them form and maintain friendships, handle challenges, and navigate social situations with confidence.
The workshop provided valuable insights into how the programs focus on gratitude, empathy, mindfulness and emotional literacy could work to complement our existing PBL framework here at Appin Public School.

PSSA Gala Day #3
PSSA Gala Day #3 will be held in Term 3, Week 4, Friday, 15 August 2025.
If your child will not be attending Gala Days, please contact the office and we will remove the fee. Students attending are required to wear their sports uniform with either a green or gold shirt, depending on their team colour (including their school hat). Soccer players are to have soccer boots and shinpads. Gala Day socks are available to purchase for $14.00 from the front office. Students will be transported to the various grounds by seat belted buses. The bus will depart school at 8:45am sharp and return to school by 3:00pm. Parents are welcome to attend.
Swimming Scheme – Term 3 Week 10
The Department of Education School Swimming Scheme is an intensive learn to swim program, which develops water confidence and provides students with basic skills in water safety and survival. The Scheme is usually conducted over ten days, however, to keep transport costs as low as possible, our sessions will run over five days. Each daily lesson will be extended to 90 minutes with a short break in between the lesson. This will help to keep costs down and encourage more students to participate.
The Scheme focuses on weak swimmers in Years 2 and 3 but also provides for students in Years 4 to 6 if they are weak swimmers. Places are limited to 60 students on a first in first served basis.
An online permission note will be sent to all students on Monday, 21st July. Please consent promptly via the online note to avoid disappointment. As there are limited spaces please only register for a place if your child is a weak swimmer. Instruction will take place at the Gordon Fetterplace Swimming Pool, Bradbury. The Scheme will continue daily for one week from Monday, 22nd September 2025 to Friday, 26th September 2025.
There is no charge for the swimming lessons. Transport will cost $60.00 for the week. Pool entry will cost $20.00 for the week. The total cost for the 5 day scheme is $80.00. You will be invoiced the $80.00 once your place has been confirmed. Please do not pay anything until your place has been confirmed and you have been invoiced. Students will leave school at 12pm and return at approximately 3pm.
IMPORTANT:
Please remember there are only 60 places available – 1st in (with the consent form), 1st served basis. Accounts can be paid off in instalments, finalised by Monday 15th September 2025.
Lost Property
With the weather getting cooler, please be sure to send a jacket with your child. PLEASE label all your child's belongings including jackets, jumpers, hats and coats. Call in to the front office to check if your child's belongings are in the lost and found tub. If they are labelled, we can return items to their rightful owner. If items are not claimed by the end of term, they will be donated to the Uniform Shop for their secondhand clothing pool or taken to a charity bin. Thank you.
School Absences
Parents or carers are required to explain the absences of their children from school promptly. An explanation for an absence must be provided to the school within 7 calendar days of the first day of any period of absence. Our school uses School Bytes to help manage student absences that can be accessed via the parent portal. The School Bytes parent portal enables you to view all your children in one portal and provide a response for any student absences that have been recorded by the school. After 7 days, parents are unable to view and respond to absences on the parent portal. They must send an email or phone the school to explain the absence. The parent portal also allows parents to provide details of a planned absence if the absence details are known in advance, for example, a scheduled medical appointment. If you are taking a family holiday and away for more than 5 days, please contact the office to obtain an Application for Extended Leave - Travel. This will need to be filled in before your holiday and approved and signed by the Principal. Thank you for your support.
Updating School
It is very important that we have up to date and correct contact details for our students. If you have a new home address, mobile phone number or email address, please contact our school office to update these details as soon as possible.
Follow Appin Public School on Facebook for regular updates. While we encourage families to 'like' and engage with our posts, comments and direct messaging will be restricted.
Our next School Assembly will be held in Term 3, on Friday 8th August, 2025 at 2:15pm in the School Hall. Sims Class will be presenting an item at this assembly.

Download School Bytes Parent App
Appin Public School uses the School Bytes Parent App. All parents are requested to download the School Bytes Parent App to make and view payments and receipts, and to complete and return permission notes. The app makes it easier to use School Bytes for your mobile devices. School Bytes provides a parent portal to help your school communicate with you. Our school uses the parent portal for various things, including online permission notes, attendance, and payments, which can be accessed via a secure link. The School Bytes parent portal enables you to view all your children in one portal and process payments for multiple siblings in one transaction. All fees can be paid off in instalments, by adjusting the amount you wish to pay at the time.

This term, we have opened up our school library as a quiet place for children to enjoy their breaks. It has proven to be very popular for many children in Kindergarten through to Year 6. Popular activities include building with blocks, chess practise, reading, drawing and creating masterpieces. The library will continue to be open during all breaks throughout Term 4!
