Experience It! Women in Engineering - STEM initiative

In 2022, 12 Turramurra High girls from years 7 to 10 participated in a girls only STEM event. Consecutively four other high schools across NSW were also participating in this event at the same time.

Experience It! Was run by Macquarie, UNSW, UoW, USYD, UTS, and WSU universities and co-ordinated by Engineering Australia.

The day started with an enlightening presentation by Prof. Hala Zreiqat AM about the use of 3D printing & nanotechnology in solving difficult medical problems.

The day followed with 3 workshops. In the first workshop the girls made a wind generator. In the second workshop the girls combined an electronics board, an Arduino kit and some coding to make a unique small scale lightshow. During this workshop the girls had a visit from experienced lighting engineer Fiona Venn.

In the last workshop the girls got a little wet and grubby making water purifiers. The day finished with the five schools joining together via Zoom to compare notes.

The girls worked very well together, had fun with new engineering experiences and got a taste of how well suited women are to the field of engineering. Next year, Turramurra High School is looking forward to continued participation in this event.

2023 Event - Experience It at University of Sydney

THS Senior Showcase

Each year the Industrial Arts subjects exhibit in the THS Senior Showcase. The showcase celebrates the achievements of HSC Major Work students in multiple subjects across the school. The showcase is held in Week 6 of Term 3 and generally stretches over 3 days and nights. Invitations are sent out to the whole THS learning community, so please keep an eye out in the lead up to this event. We will post the details for the showcase on this website, THS Facebook, THS Website and send invitations via email.

The showcase is not only a fantastic opportunity for friends and family of the HSC students to come along and celebrate their outstanding effort and achievement, however, it's also the best opportunity for students in lower years to come along and get a really strong understand of what it's like to commit to a major work subject.

Meet a Designer Day

Year 11 and 12 Design and Technology students had the opportunity to meet and interact with an outstanding bunch of Design Industry Professional in Turrmurra High School’s very first ‘Meet a Designer Day’. The Designers consisted of 6 THS Alumni including: Sandy Ghent (Industrial Designer- Electrolux), Gemma Ferguson (Product Designer), Kiran Best (Fashion Designer), Keith Perry (Product Designer), Chelsea Lane (Interior Designer) and Thea Schmertmann (Design student at University).

Our special guest and key note speaker for the day was the founder and CEO of the international brand, Huskee Cup, Mr Saxon Wright. This opportunity was very well received by students and many commented on the value of speaking with Industry professionals and hearing about their pathway into the design field and their design process. A huge thankyou for everyone that was involved in making the day a success.

Work with a Designer

Each year Design and Technology students get the opportunity to participate in an intensive workshop with a professional designer. Within this workshop students gain a hands on experience into the way the designer works and the design process that they follow.

Here you can see the Yr 11 Design and Technology class working with expert 'Bespoke Jewellery' designer Robbie Chapman. Robbie walked the class through his unique design process in the development of a custom Turramurra High School Jewellery line.

A big thank you to Robbie Chapman for providing our students with this invaluable opportunity and insight into the work of a designer.

Ysoft 3D printing industry partnership

In 2019 Turramurra High School Industrial Arts department were successful applicants of the first Ysoft Australia 3D printing Academy partnership. The partnership aimed to allow THS students access to innovated 3D printing hardware and software, developed by Ysoft. THS Industrial Arts Teacher gained access to the Ysoft Academy, which is a one of a kind online learning environment. THS took delivery of 5 brand new BE3D EDEE 3D printing machine. These machines are designed specifically for education purposes with the inclusion of a completely lock printing chamber, toxic free PLA printing filament and individual accounts for every THS student.

In exchange the THS learning community provides valuable feedback on all Ysoft Academy developed materials and puts the machines through rigorous on the job testing.

Throughout 2019 this partnership proved widely successful, students from Yr 7-12 utilising the machines and teachers from all faculties up-skilling themselves to be able to use these innovations within their subject areas.

During the current global pandemic, Ysoft and Turramurra High School have also used their skills and machines to develop over 400 medical face shields that have been distributed to local medical facilities to help protect our front line medical workers.
