For my research project I intend to survey fellow students about their social lives within UOW. With questions such as, "how many of your close friends were made while at UOW?" and "How many UOW community events have you been too? (Club Day, Unibar concerts etc)". With these focuses and an incognito approach, I hope to look ethically into student's social lives while studying here at UOW. I want to see how many students have actually made quality relationships, had meaningful conversations and have enjoyed good experiences within UOW. I predict I may find certain trends within student's majors or what year the students are currently enrolled in.
Ill also look into results from other researcher's work in similar subjects. With evidence from other papers I'll be able to compare UOW's student's social lives to other student bodies around the world. I believe this is a current and important subject because Im hoping to see how many students are actually using UOW's resources, mentioned above, and how many students are at UOW jut to attend their classes. I also believe this should be easily achievable as all students here, university friends or no, have an experience on what being social like feels like at UOW. This is also important to myself as It applies to me. In my own case I attend class, study at the library, have some food, maybe have a few short conversations, and thats about the extent of my social life at UOW. All of my close friendships were formed outside of UOW.
Im very excited to start the process for this research and begin surveying fellow students. Im hoping to learn more about student's mental health and the different tools UOW offers to improve the strong cases of isolation that can be felt while studying. Im hoping to see how common or uncommon this is by surveying other students without identification to provide more secure answers. My plan for the survey will follow a simple question and multiple choice answer arrangement however, with those comfortable I may do more in depth interviews with to gather deeper data and quotes to possibly cite in my research. In the end I hope the experience of isolation at UOW is not common among students here, or if it is, I hope the tools to improve the community connections within UOW they provide are well utilised and students find the tools helpful.
When I enrolled for this class I was quite excited, it seemed like something I'd be able to pass because of my experience with Big Picture Education. However, when it came time to finish the term I ended up quite disappointed in my work ethic. I turned in an assignment late for this class which hadn't happened in my first year at UOW. and my secondary research was lacking this year as I could only find a few relevant sources for my final portfolio. However, for my primary research I am happy with my work, 12 survey responses seem to be about the same as my fellow students, and my 5 interviews provided great quotes to support my hypothesis. I am also happy for this final assessment. I am at least turning in completed work on time. I enjoyed the tutorials as well. They were highly engaging with the inclusion of free candy. Overall I'd rate my happiness with this class a 8 out of 10 but a happiness in my performance a 6 out of 10.
