Kindergarten have been learning all about living things in Science – and just as we started, a mystery egg appeared in the Kindergarten playground!
Over the past four weeks, a kind “mystery creature” has been leaving Kindergarten clues. The messages told the children to take care of the egg with love, kindness, and respect so that it would grow bigger and stronger. And it certainly did – the tiny egg grew huge!
This Thursday, the egg finally hatched, and Kindergarten were over the moon to discover that inside was a magical creature. His mother, Evelina, revealed in a letter that her family belong to a secret group of creatures called the Lunari. The Lunari are magical, mystical creatures who only appear to children who are truly kind and helpful. They have wings to fly high across the skies, scales shaped like feathers so they can glide under water, horns that grow stronger as they age to knock fruit from tall trees, and the ability to breathe ice and see in the dark. But most importantly, their job is to spread kindness around the world.
Evelina told the children that she chose Kindergarten because of their kindness, patience, and respect. She was so impressed with how they cared for her egg – keeping it warm, dry, and safe – that she decided to name her baby Bilguara, after the two beautiful Kindergarten classes. To thank the children, Evelina also left them a special gift: a tiny mystery creature of their own to take care of, as a reminder of how loving and amazing they are.
This magical experience has not only brought science to life but has also reminded our students of the importance of care, love, and respect for all living things.
During weeks 9 and 10, K/6 Djamalang students had the opportunity to have two guinea pigs visit as class pets. The opportunity tied in with their English text – ‘I Wanna Iguana’ written by Karen Kaufman Orloff. Students learnt how to care for the guinea pigs and experience what it is like to look after a pet. They showed compassion and responsibility while taking care of the guinea pigs. Students were responsible for naming the guinea pigs, feeding and changing their water daily, as well as cleaning their pet enclosure. Students developed their problem-solving skills and worked as a team over the two weeks to care for Chilli and Oreo.
Take a look at what K/6 Djamalang students had to say about the guinea pigs:
"It was hard work looking after Chilli and Oreo, but it was really good having them in our classroom" - Rex T.
"I want to keep Chilli and Oreo. I liked seeing them every day" - Phoenix I.
"I want to keep them forever" - Chevy H.
This week our Kindergarten students put on an art show for our students! Check out their making process and some of the sculptures below. They had so much fun!
On Friday, Cameron, Adeline and Hunter were awarded with their prizes from the NSW Ambulance Service as part of their Appreciation Day. It was wonderful to celebrate the incredible work our NSW Paramedics and Dispatchers do on a daily basis from the Barrack Heights Control Centre. Our students were excited to receive their prizes for winning their respective divisions of the colouring competition.
Congratulations to our 4 Public Speaking Finalists who presented their speeches this Monday at Warilla Public School. Brock, Madeline, Thomas and Sophie represented Barrack Heights Public School at The Village Community of Schools Public Speaking Competition. It was a hot field and all our representatives were AMAZING. It is not an easy gig to get up in front of so many people, but they did it with a pinch of courage and a spoonful of self-belief. Well done! It was a proud day for everyone involved. A huge thank you to Warilla Public School for hosting and organising; Warilla High School for adjudicating and to our very own Mrs Hodgson who made this possible for our students.
K-2 students have been lining up like legends when the bell rings, ready to blast off into their next learning adventure. Secret teachers have been on patrol, handing out points to the classes that are fastest to the line and quickest to settle. 🕒✨ A massive shout-out to Kinder Gugara, our Week 9 Line Up Champions 🏆, who zoomed to the line and scored themselves some well-deserved extra playtime! It was a nail-biting race, and we can’t wait to see which class will sprint to victory in Week 10! 🚀🎊
Value: Engaged Focus: We embrace challenges
This week, our Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) focus is on being engaged by embracing challenges. Students are learning that challenges are part of learning, and that persistence, problem-solving, and asking for help are important ways to keep growing.
You can support this focus at home by encouraging your child to keep trying when faced with something difficult, whether it’s homework, a new skill, or helping with chores. Praising effort and persistence shows children that challenges are a valuable part of learning.
