Reminder that on Monday, Garawan & Bandangi students will be celebrating the end of the year and all their hard work, as they attend the movies. They will relax and enjoy time together outside the classroom. Watching Zootopia 2’s entertaining storyline and vibrant animation. It promises to be a memorable event for all.
Presentation Day is this Tuesday, and we’re looking forward to a wonderful morning of celebration. Award recipients and their families have been invited, and we can’t wait to acknowledge the achievements of our students.
Don’t forget! The Year 6 Farewell will be held on Wednesday 10 December 2025 at Warilla Bowls and Recreation Club in the Diamond Room. It’s set to be a fantastic night as we celebrate our wonderful Year 6 students.
Gugara Kindergarten has launched its Cut for Kindness Christmas Appeal, inspired by a class discussion about how small acts of kindness can make a big difference. The students are aiming to raise $1000 to support the Salvation Army Wollongong Red Shield Appeal and to purchase gifts for children in the Wollongong Hospital Children’s Ward.
To support the fundraiser, the school will hold a Crazy Hair and Christmas Mufti Day on Monday 15 December, and—if the $1000 goal is reached—Mr Penno will cut his hair at the Twilight event on Tuesday 16 December.
A special presentation assembly will be held in the school hall at 9:00am on Thursday 18 December, where representatives from the Salvation Army Wollongong will be welcomed and the students’ contributions will be presented.
The school community is warmly invited to support this initiative as Gugara students work together to spread kindness this Christmas.
What a fantastic two weeks it has been at the pool! Our swimming and water safety program has been truly outstanding, with all students showing incredible improvement and growth in their swimming abilities. The final day featured a “Survive and Revive/Rescue with Swimming Buddies” session, and it was so inspiring to see students working together and supporting each other in the water.
We’re thrilled to share some happy snaps capturing the fun, teamwork, and dedication our students demonstrated throughout the program. Thank you to everyone who made this experience possible!
Stay safe and keep swimming!
Students at Barrack Heights have created their very own handmade artworks, and we are excited to announce that these pieces will be available for purchase at our Art Sale on Wednesday 10 December at 2:30pm under the K–2 COLA.
Artwork prices will range from 20 cents to $5, with cash sales only.
All proceeds from the Art Sale will go directly towards Gugara Kindergarten’s Cut for Kindness Christmas Appeal, supporting the Salvation Army Wollongong Red Shield Appeal and the Wollongong Hospital Children’s Ward.
We warmly invite families and community members to come along, admire the creativity of our students, and support this meaningful cause.

From 10 December 2025, many social media platforms will be required to prevent Australians under 16 from creating or maintaining accounts on certain age-restricted services. The changes aim to protect children from pressures and risks they can be exposed to while logged in to social media accounts.
The eSafety Commissioner is leading the implementation of the law. They are responsible for identifying platforms and supporting the community with information and resources.
Under-16s will still be able to see publicly available social media content that doesn’t require logging into an account. There are no penalties for young people who use age-restricted platforms or for their parents and carers, as the responsibility is with the platforms.
We encourage you to access eSafety’s resources and support for families on their website and register for one of the upcoming webinarsExternal link for parents and carers.

Selective high school Year 7 entry in 2027: Apply when your child is at the end of Year 5 or the beginning of Year 6.
Opportunity class Year 5 entry in 2027: Apply when your child is at the end of Year 3 or the beginning of Year 4.
Selective high schools and opportunity classes are some of the ways the NSW Department of Education supports high potential and gifted students.
What are their benefits?
Students learn alongside, and form friendships with, other high potential and gifted classmates. Special teaching methods allow students to learn at a quicker pace and in more detail.
Research shows that students benefit both academically and socially when learning with classmates who have similar abilities.
Selective high schools and opportunity classes are not zoned so you can apply to ones outside your local enrolment area. Within each co-educational opportunity class and selective high school there will be an equal number of places available for girls and boys.

Is a selective high school or opportunity class the right fit for my child?
A selective high school or opportunity class might be a great fit if your child:
learns quickly
asks complex questions
is highly motivated
has a good memory
is intensely focused in their area of interest
Where are selective high schools (Year 7-12) located?
There are 4 types of selective high schools:
fully selective high schools, where all students attending the school have high potential or are gifted
partially selective high schools, where there is a mix of students who have high potential or are gifted and local area students
4 agricultural selective high schools, including 3 boarding schools
Aurora College, which provides online selective classes for rural and remote students in their local host schools.
Search for a selective high school near you at Find a selective high school.
Where are opportunity classes (Year 5-6) located?
There are 2 types of opportunity classes:
full-time opportunity classes in selected primary schools
Aurora College, which provides online opportunity classes for rural and remote students in their local authorised host schools.
Search for an opportunity class near you at Find an opportunity class.
Students successfully placed attend the opportunity class full-time in Years 5 and 6. In most cases, students who have accepted a place in an opportunity class will leave their current school to attend the school with the opportunity class.
Discuss the opportunity with your child and look through the information together on the Selective high schools and opportunity classes website and in the student resource hub:
Fair and equitable access
The Equity Placement Model helps make access fairer for more high potential students in our community.
We know that some students may be missing out because they experience educational disadvantage.
Under the model, up to 20% of places in each selective high school and opportunity class are held for:
students from low socio-educational advantage backgrounds
Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students
students from rural and remote locations
students with disability.
These students still receive offers based on their performance in the placement test.
Learn more at Fair access.
The application process
Complete the online application.
Applications close on 20 February 2026.
Once your application has been submitted and processed, your child will need to sit a computer-based placement test. Learn more at Application process.
