Teacher notes
A focus on the application and understanding of safe dance practice used in dance performance
Student dance resource developed by The Arts Unit
Years 11 and 12 dance
What will your students learn?
Welcome to Moving safely, a resource designed for students in the Stage 6 dance course.
This resource focuses on the application and understanding of safe dance practice used in dance performance.
Students will use dance terminology to identify the physiology of the human body and the importance of safe dance practice as it is relevant to the dancing body and dance as an artform.
Your students will:
identify and describe body skills
explain the function of safe dance practice
analyse the muscular and skeletal system
evaluate your own body's limitations and capabilities.

Suggestions for how to use this resource with your students
Teachers are welcome to omit any images that are not relevant to their own students.
Teachers are encouraged to link the activities to the students’ own dance performances.
For each activity, there are suggestions for how the students can communicate their response to you. These include written, photographic and video responses. Please give your students instructions as to which responses you want to see and how best to share these responses.
Activity 1: Perform the body skill in the image as it appears in your own dance performance. Record this and send it to your teacher.
Activity 2: Investigate the movements that are significant in relation to the execution of this movement (think about the movements that come before and after the skill). What safe dance considerations need to be taken into account here? Record yourself demonstrating and discussing this and send to your teacher.
Activity 3: Analyse the causes/prevention/treatment of injuries that could occur without the correct relationship between the muscular and skeletal system. Record yourself demonstrating and discussing this and send to your teacher.
Activity 4: Judge the accommodations you have made in relation to your own body’s limitations and capabilities. Record yourself demonstrating and discussing this and send to your teacher.
These activities could be demonstrated physically and orally in class to support the interview component of the HSC Dance practical exam.
Collection of student work
Google Form: create a Google form with activities and/or questions. Students can also upload any files they create. Email this form to your students with the Creative Class link and all your student responses will be combined in a Google sheet.
Google Classroom Assignment: create an assignment or a quiz in your Google Classroom with activities and/or questions. Students can also upload any files they create.
MS Teams: create a quiz or assignment in your class team drive where students can submit responses and upload any files they create.
Email: ask your students to email you any responses and files they create.
