Student dance resource developed by The Arts Unit
Years 3 to 6 dance
Storytelling through dance is a resource developed for Stage 2 and 3 students.
Students will learn about how visual images can inspire dance and using expressive qualities to communicate these ideas. Students will also have the opportunity to reflect on their own work.
Your students will:
explore and develop movement combinations in relation to an idea
create a movement narrative by looking at visual images
perform and communicate intent using a range of expressive qualities
reflect on the process of making dance.
Stage 2
DAS 2.2: explores, selects and combines movement using the elements of dance to communicate ideas, feelings or moods.
DAS 2.3: gives personal opinions about the use of the elements and meaning in their own and others’ dances.
Stage 3
DAS 3.2: explores, selects, organises and refines movement, using the elements of dance to communicate intent.
DAS 3.3: discusses and interprets the relationship between content, meaning and context of their own and others’ dances.
Activity 1: Students could flip the process and write their own story and have another student create an artwork about it.
Activity 2 and 3: The process could include collaboration in groups. Combine with a group of 4 other students, manipulate the gestures to tell a story between the characters, combine other groups and have students teach each other the movement.
Activity 4: Students could use this as a tool to refine their performance and create new movement sequences.
Google Form: create a Google form with activities and/or questions. Students can also upload any files they create. Email this form to your students with the Creative Class link and all your student responses will be combined in a Google sheet.
Google Classroom Assignment: create an assignment or a quiz in your Google Classroom with activities and/or questions. Students can also upload any files they create.
MS Teams: create a quiz or assignment in your class team drive where students can submit responses and upload any files they create.
Email: ask your students to email you any responses and files they create.
Flipgrid: a website that allows teachers to create 'grids' to facilitate video discussions. Each grid is a message board where teachers can pose questions called 'topics'. Students can post video responses that appear in a tiled grid display.
Jamboard: an interactive whiteboard which can be used for class feedback.
Download and print this document to send to students with limited access to online resources.
