Using Schools Spectacular to apply safety, lighting, audio, staging and vision knowledge

What will your students learn?

Your students will:

  • view professional schools performances of 'Schools Spectacular'

  • apply knowledge and understanding of technical elements of production

  • discuss the use of specific production elements.

VET Entertainment Industry Syllabus

Audio

  • demonstrates knowledge of audio equipment and accessories used in the entertainment industry.

  • describes the relationship between audio and other technical and creative aspects of live performances and events.

Lighting

  • demonstrates knowledge of lighting equipment and accessories used in the entertainment industry.

  • describes the relationship between lighting and other technical and creative aspects of live performances and events.

Safety

  • demonstrates an understanding of work health and safety (WHS) compliance, participation and consultation in the entertainment industry.

  • applies risk management in an entertainment industry workplace.

Staging

  • demonstrates knowledge of the production context in relation to staging operations for live performances and events.

  • describes the relationship between staging operations and other technical and creative aspects of live performances and events.

Vision Systems

  • demonstrates knowledge of vision system equipment and accessories used in the entertainment industry.

  • describes the relationship between vision systems and other technical and creative aspects of live performances and events.

  • applies the troubleshooting process to solve common faults and problems in vision system equipment and operations.

Suggestions for how to use this resource with your students

This Creative Class requires prior knowledge and understanding in the areas of:

    • audio

    • lighting

    • safety

    • staging

    • vision systems.

Each task is based on an item from the 2014 NSW Public School 'Schools Spectacular' as a stimulus for discussion of the technical production elements.

The style of questions will also prepare students for the HSC written examination.

Ensure the students understand and respond correctly to the key verbs at the start of each question.

Collection of student work

  • Google Form: create a Google form with activities and/or questions. Students can also upload any files they create. Email this form to your students with the Creative Class link and all your student responses will be combined in a Google sheet.

  • Google Classroom Assignment: create an assignment or a quiz in your Google Classroom with activities and/or questions. Students can also upload any files they create.

  • MS Teams: create a quiz or assignment in your class team drive where students can submit responses and upload any files they create.

  • Email: ask your students to email you any responses and files they create.

  • Flipgrid: a website that allows teachers to create 'grids' to facilitate video discussions. Each grid is a message board where teachers can pose questions called 'topics'. Students can post video responses that appear in a tiled grid display.

  • Jamboard: an interactive whiteboard which can be used for class feedback.
