Years 7 to 10 dance
Let’s Fosse is a jazz dance tutorial that is designed for students in Stage 4 and 5 dance. Students will develop knowledge, skills and understanding of the Fosse dance style.
Your students will:
explore dance technique and the elements of dance as influenced by performance and theatrical style
perform dances with increasing confidence, communicating the intention of the choreographer
apply the elements of space, time and dynamics to dance performance to personalise dance movement
differentiate and make connections between the social and historical contexts of dance and the development of style.
Stage 4
4.1.3: demonstrates an understanding of aspects of performance quality through the performance of locomotor and non-locomotor combinations, sequences and dances.
4.3.1: describes dance performances through the elements of dance.
4.3.2: identifies that dance works of art express ideas.
Stage 5
5.1.3: demonstrates an understanding and application of aspects of performance quality and interpretation through performance.
5.3.1: describes and analyses dance as the communication of ideas within a context.
5.3.3: applies understandings and experiences drawn from their own work and dance works of art.
Teachers could create a unit of Bob Fosse’s influence on dance, outlining his:
choreographic style
influence on dance
tutorials to learn repertoire (there are many tutorials on YouTube).
There are a number of online Fosse resources that can be used to develop your unit.
Using Kira Nelson’s Art Bite – Blackbird in the style of Bob Fosse:
Students can create their own movement to one of the verses in the song using similar movement to the chorus, manipulating the elements of dance.
Students could send their video to each other to peer review.
If working at school with multiple students, you could ask the students to vary the work using transitions, canons, stillness, changes in level and so on.
Google Form: create a Google form with activities and/or questions. Students can also upload any files they create. Email this form to your students with the Creative Class link and all your student responses will be combined in a Google sheet.
Google Classroom Assignment: create an assignment or a quiz in your Google Classroom with activities and/or questions. Students can also upload any files they create.
MS Teams: create a quiz or assignment in your class team drive where students can submit responses and upload any files they create.
Email: ask your students to email you any responses and files they create.
Flipgrid: a website that allows teachers to create 'grids' to facilitate video discussions. Each grid is a message board where teachers can pose questions called 'topics'. Students can post video responses that appear in a tiled grid display.
Jamboard: an interactive whiteboard which can be used for class feedback.
Download and print this document to send to students with limited access to online resources.
