This Creative Class is designed as a general introduction to impromptu speaking for all students and can also assist students who wish to enter competitions to improve their impromptu speaking.
There are a number of valuable lateral thinking, reading comprehension and literacy applications in this lesson.
The class introduces students to the skills of:
defining and interpreting a topic
applying general knowledge to new contexts
independently structuring and delivering a cohesive short text.
Through the study of a range of impromptu stimulus words and phrases, students may also:
extend their vocabulary
think critically about the multiple meanings of words
become familiar with a range of figures of speech and catch-phrases that will improve their overall reading comprehension
share their experiences and views in a confident manner.
You can extend this lesson for your students through the provision of regular stimulus words and phrases that they can interpret and use to apply their knowledge. Offering opportunities for students to practise their impromptu speaking in front of an audience will also build on the skills and content presented here.
Try the Cliché List or The Game Gal word generator sites for extra stimulus material.
You may also like to include sample spelling and vocabulary lists from NAPLAN marking guidelines to help familiarise and challenge your students with new words (see pages 98-103).
Google Form: create a Google form with activities and/or questions. Students can also upload any files they create. Email this form to your students with the Creative Class link and all your student responses will be combined in a Google sheet.
Google Classroom Assignment: create an assignment or a quiz in your Google Classroom with activities and/or questions. Students can also upload any files they create.
MS Teams: create a quiz or assignment in your class team drive where students can submit responses and upload any files they create.
Email: ask your students to email you any responses and files they create.
Flipgrid: a website that allows teachers to create 'grids' to facilitate video discussions. Each grid is a message board where teachers can pose questions called 'topics'. Students can post video responses that appear in a tiled grid display.
Jamboard: an interactive whiteboard which can be used for class feedback.
