Developing historical characters

Matu Ngaropo plays the character of George Washington in the HAMILTON Australia production.

Student activities

  • Discuss how an actor can bring elements of themselves and/or their culture to a character when developing a role.

  • Explore Stanislavski’s acting techniques and how truth and belief are fundamental to acting. Gain strategies to use when developing a character.

  • As an actor, you will face many challenges day-to-day. Explore how preparation and focus as a performer can aid in overcoming such personal challenges when performing a role.

  • Explore how you as a performer can connect to the audience as a performer.

Working with accents

Victory Ndukwe plays the roles of Marquis de Lafayette and Thomas Jefferson in the HAMILTON Australia production.

Student activities

  • As a performer in musical theatre, you have to layer acting with singing, and in HAMILTON Australia, also rap. Discuss strategies actors can use to develop both these skills for performance.

  • When performing an iconic character that is well known, how can you approach the development of the role?

  • As an actor, explore how you can work on your confidence and strengths to succeed in the industry.

  • Discuss the importance of effective and regular rehearsal when an actor develops a character to ensure it has depth.

  • Assess yourself as an actor and consider your skills and what areas you could further develop to improve as an overall performer.
