The lighting equipment required for basic event includes:
lighting truss (installed or portable)
general wash lights (Parcans or Fresnel)
lighting control board or software
DMX cables
safety chains
special spotlight (Profile) or follow spot if required.

When purchasing lighting equipment it is essential to be clear on the reason or purpose you have for buying the equipment, the specific features you require and the budget specifications you have.
Some useful questions to ask before purchasing equipment include:
What does the school require the equipment for?
What are the specifications of the space the equipment is being used in?
What equipment is specifically needed?
What specific features of each piece of equipment are required? (For example: Do I need general wash lights or special effect lighting?)
Does the new lighting equipment need to link with existing equipment?
Is the equipment being permanently installed or portable?
Is the budget allowing for equipment at entry level, mid range or higher quality?
When purchasing equipment for your school it is essential to follow all the Department of Education policies and procedures.
Support resources and training for using EDBuy is available on the DoE procurement webpage.

Some of the common features include:
colour
pattern (produced by a gobo)
focus
pan movements (horizontal)
tilt movements (vertical)
rotation.
A follow spot is a moving spot light that is manually controlled. It has features that include colour gel, gobos and shutters to adjust the size and shape of the light beam.
You do not have to own a follow spot but hiring one for an arts performance can be useful.
A lighting console is used to control the lanterns' intensity, colour and effects. There are analogue and digital consoles that come in hardware and software forms.
There are many features of lighting consoles, including:
fixture faders
programming
chasing
strobing
master control.
On an analogue desk, each fader only sends a single signal to the light through a cable.
A digital desk combines data signals to send through multiple cables via looping or daisy chaining.
The video 'Lighting control' with Lincoln Gidney provides a further explanation to lighting control.
