Student dance resource developed by The Arts Unit
Years 11 and 12 dance
Communicating ideas through dance is a resource designed for students in the Stage 6 Dance course. The resource focuses on the understanding of the compositional process.
Your students will:
identify the use of the elements of dance in dance composition
analyse the choreographer’s choice of movement to reflect the concept and intent
interpret the choreographer’s organisation of the movement as it relates to the concept and intent
evaluate the effectiveness of the choreographic choices to communicate the concept and intent.
Preliminary
P1.1: understands dance as the performance and communication of ideas through movement and in written and oral form.
P1.3: develops the skills of dance through performing, composing and appreciating dance.
P3.1: identifies the elements of dance composition.
HSC
H1.2: performs, composes and appreciates dance as an artform.
H3.1: identifies and selects the appropriate elements of composition/choreography in response to a specific concept/intent.
H3.3: recognises and values the role of dance in achieving individual expression.
Teachers are encouraged to link the activities to the students’ own dance performances.
Suggestions for linking to students' own dance performances:
Activity 1: Describe the concept/intent for your own composition.
Activity 2: Discuss how you have generated movement in relation to this concept/intent (students could discuss the elements of dance, abstraction).
Activity 3: Explain the choices you have made in relation to the way you have organised the movement in your work (students could discuss their motif into phrase and phrase into sequence).
Activity 4: Demonstrate your ability to organise the dance (students could discuss their choice of formal structure and transitions).
These activities could be demonstrated physically and orally in class or recorded and sent to the teacher to support the interview component of the HSC Dance practical exam.
Google Form: create a Google form with activities and/or questions. Students can also upload any files they create. Email this form to your students with the Creative Class link and all your student responses will be combined in a Google sheet.
Google Classroom Assignment: create an assignment or a quiz in your Google Classroom with activities and/or questions. Students can also upload any files they create.
MS Teams: create a quiz or assignment in your class team drive where students can submit responses and upload any files they create.
Email: ask your students to email you any responses and files they create.
Flipgrid: a website that allows teachers to create 'grids' to facilitate video discussions. Each grid is a message board where teachers can pose questions called 'topics'. Students can post video responses that appear in a tiled grid display.
Jamboard: an interactive whiteboard which can be used for class feedback.
Download and print this document to send to students with limited access to online resources.
