Week 4 & 5 of Term 4
Dear Parents and Carers,
Primary Principals Conference 2025
Last week, I had the privilege of representing Appin Public School at the annual Primary Principals Conference in Sydney. The event was nothing short of inspiring, bringing together leaders from across the state to reflect, connect, and reimagine the future of education.
Hosted by the always brilliant Annabel Crabb, the conference was filled with thought-provoking ideas and heartfelt stories that reminded us why we do what we do. Jana Pittman spoke with honesty and strength about resilience and embracing challenge, while Vincent Fantauzzo shared the beauty of creativity and vulnerability through art. Gilbert Enoka, renowned for his work with the All Blacks, reminded us that success is grounded in mindset, culture, and collective purpose.
We were challenged to think differently about the future by Damon Gameau, who explored innovation and sustainability, and deeply moved by Bernie Shakeshaft’s message about connection and belonging for young people. Kath Koschel inspired us with her incredible story of gratitude and kindness, and there was even a fascinating look into the evolving world of AI and education, sparking ideas for how we can thoughtfully integrate technology to enhance learning.
And of course, the unforgettable Cathy Freeman, 25 years on from her iconic Sydney 2000 moment, captivated everyone with her grace, humility, and message of perseverance.
I left the conference feeling energised and grateful to be part of such an incredible profession, with new ideas to bring back to our Appin community as we continue walking forward together.

Kingston, Zayne, Lylah and Sybil from Lacey Class
Cameron from Eva Class
This fortnight, I have really enjoyed visiting classrooms and observing writing lessons across the school. These visits have also provided valuable insights into our next steps for 2026, as we continue to build consistency in writing instruction and celebrate the progress our students are making.
This term, our Assistant Principals are working closely with their teams to identify a specific focus area using data sources such as phonics diagnostic assessments or Check-In assessments. This data-driven approach is helping teams refine their practice and strengthen student learning outcomes. Assistant Principals will be sharing evidence of practice and evidence of impact at our next Executive Planning Day to guide ongoing improvement.
We are also pleased to welcome our practicum teachers, who are currently working alongside and learning from some of our amazing teachers. You may recognise some of these names as they were with us in Term 2:
Harrison Buesnel is with Mr Crane, Charlotte Dedden is with Mr Hennessy, Sarah Russell is with Mrs Hawkins and Mr Pincock, Tahlia Stevenson is with Mr McCloskey, Eloise Turner is with Mrs Lewis, Hannah Xioa is with Ms Paxton, Lorelai Hodges is with Miss Duggan, Chloe Ellaway is with Mr Sweeney and Corey Hladik is with Miss Kennedy.
It is wonderful to see future teachers gaining valuable experience in our classrooms and being mentored by such dedicated educators.
I will be taking extended leave over the next two weeks to spend some time overseas with my family and look forward to seeing everyone when I return in Week 7.
Here’s a fun writing idea to try at home:
Letter to a Toy
Step 1 – Write a letter:
Write a short letter to your favourite toy or stuffed animal. Tell it about your day and ask questions using question words like who, what, when, where, why, and how.
Example questions:
Who is your best toy friend?
What games do you like to play?
When do you like to rest?
Where do you like to sit during the day?
Why do you like being my toy?
How do you stay so cuddly?
Step 2 – Toy’s response:
Now, imagine your toy writes back to you! Use their voice to answer the questions you asked.
Example responses:
Who: My best friend is Teddy the bear from your bookshelf.
What: I love playing hide and seek with you!
When: I rest quietly on your bed while you’re at school.
Where: I like sitting by the window where the sunlight warms me.
Why: I love being your toy because you give me hugs and take care of me.
How: I stay cuddly because I have magic fluff just for you!
This will help your child to write questions and answers, using imagination and adding details to make your letters fun! If they would like to share their writing with me, I would love to see it!!
This term, our APCI team is spending time in classrooms observing mathematics lessons across the school. It has been wonderful to see engaging Number Talks and Number Sense Routines in action, with teachers applying their professional learning to strengthen how our students think flexibly about numbers. These observations highlight the many ways teachers are supporting students to explain their thinking, use multiple strategies, and make connections between numbers. The insights gathered will help us identify our next steps as we shape our whole-school maths focus for 2026.
Maths at Home – Try This! (Additive Thinking Focus)
Additive thinking is currently our whole school focus and it is all about understanding how numbers can be combined and broken apart in different ways. Here are some simple ways to explore this at home:
🧮 Make Ten: When playing with toys, snacks, or Lego pieces, ask “How many more do we need to make 10?” or “If you have 6, how can you make 10 another way?”
🎲 Double It: Roll two dice and find doubles or near doubles (e.g. 6 + 7 is close to double 6 plus one more).
🍎 Part–Whole Talk: At dinner, say “There are 8 potatoes on the plate—if we eat 3, how many are left? How else could we work that out?”
These small, playful moments encourage your child to think about numbers flexibly, building strong foundations for mental computation and problem solving.
Stage 3 (Year 5 & 6): Exciting Preparations and Focused Learning
Since returning from camp, our students have hit the ground running, continuing to explore themes in the text The One and Only Ivan while refining their persuasive writing skills. In mathematics, they have been examining chance and probability, applying their previously learned skills of converting between decimals, fractions, and percentages to interpret frequencies in various data sets.
The Year 6 students have been enthusiastically preparing their stalls for the upcoming Hoopla Day on 3rd December - make sure you do your chores and earn some extra coins to bring along to the day! Their creativity and collaboration are shining through as they get ready to contribute to this fun and engaging event.
Meanwhile, our Year 5 students are deeply involved in the 2026 leadership campaign. Those interested have been actively participating and submitting their applications. In addition to this, the entire grade are working on a heartfelt letter and a special surprise for their 2026 Kindergarten buddies, fostering a wonderful connection between year groups.
On the academic front, our recent Check-In assessments have provided valuable insights. Using this data, we have developed a focused approach to strengthen reading skills across our stage. A key emphasis is on enhancing inferencing skills — an essential part of reading comprehension. Students are learning to combine clues from the text with their prior knowledge to better understand and respond to questions. This targeted strategy is helping to build confident and thoughtful readers.
We are proud of the dedication shown by our students and look forward to sharing more exciting updates in the coming weeks!

Stage 2 (Year 2, 3 & 4)
English
It has been a busy and exciting few weeks in Stage 2 as we are wrapping up our 200 Minutes of Danger unit. The students have thoroughly enjoyed exploring the key elements of creative narrative writing and developing their storytelling skills.
As part of our Check-In Assessment for Years 3–6, we identified that vocabulary is an important area for further growth across the stage. In response, Stage 2 teachers have been implementing focused lessons to help students build and strengthen their understanding of vocabulary in context. Each morning, students participate in short, 10-minute sessions that encourage them to unpack words, explore meaning within texts, and expand their language skills. Our goal is to see this growing vocabulary knowledge shine through in their everyday writing, helping them to create more engaging and expressive pieces.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students have been deepening their understanding of fractions and how these concepts apply to real-world situations. To make learning more interactive and meaningful, students have been using Maths Online, which provides immediate feedback and data. This allows teachers to tailor instruction to meet the needs of each learner and ensure everyone continues to make progress.
STEM
In STEM, our K–6 focus this term is on developing teamwork and collaboration skills. Stage 2 students have been working in small groups to design and build solar-powered machines, such as a “Tightrope Walker.” These hands-on activities have encouraged creativity, problem-solving, and cooperation — all while having lots of fun!
Stage 2 Excursion
Finally, a reminder that our excursion to the Australian Museum is coming up on Wednesday, 20th November. We are looking forward to an exciting day of exploration and learning about Aboriginal perspectives, as well as the rich diversity of cultures, animals, and environments — both past and present.
Thank you for your continued support at home. We are so proud of the enthusiasm and effort our Stage 2 students bring to their learning each day!

What's coming up for Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten) this term?
Our recent visit to the University of Wollongong Science Centre was filled with incredible learning and fun! Students had the opportunity to step inside the planetarium, where they journeyed through the cosmos and deepened their understanding of space in a truly immersive way. The excitement continued as we watched fascinating real-life science experiments unfold before our eyes. Some lucky students were invited to join the scientists themselves, getting hands-on experience and sparking their curiosity even further. A highlight of the day was the STEM challenge, where students put their creativity and engineering skills to the test by building the tallest tower using Duplo blocks. The competition was fierce, and the winning tower reached an impressive height of over 1 metre! Hands-on science activities engaged everyone, with favourites including watching parachutes gently descend, observing balls float and testing endurance with hanging challenges. For many students, this was their first experience travelling by bus, adding an extra layer of excitement to their day. It was truly a memorable outing that combined education and enjoyment in the best possible way.
This week students had a wonderful time working alongside their Stage 3 buddy classes to complete a variety of engaging activities. This partnership not only fostered teamwork and friendship across different year groups but also helped build confidence and communication skills for the younger students. While these collaborative activities were underway, we were also excited to welcome our 2026 Kindergarten students for their first transition visit.
As we look ahead, preparations are underway for some special upcoming events. Our Grand Friends Day is around the corner. Students are busy rehearsing performances and preparing special activities to show their appreciation. In addition, we are eagerly anticipating the Appin Carols, a festive occasion that brings everyone together to enjoy music, community spirit, and holiday cheer. We can’t wait to celebrate these wonderful events with families, friends, and the wider community!
