Week 7 & 8 of Term 3
Week 8 Already!
It’s hard to believe we’re already in Week 8 — where has the time gone? This term has been such a busy one, filled with learning, events, and achievements right across our school. From classrooms buzzing with activity to the many opportunities our students have embraced beyond the school gates, it has been wonderful to see everyone working so hard and celebrating success together. With only a couple of weeks left in the term, we look forward to finishing strongly while also taking time to reflect on just how much has been accomplished.
Student Arrival Times
A reminder to all families that students should not arrive at school before 8:30am. There is no teacher supervision prior to this time, and for student safety it is important that children are not on site before 8:30am — even if accompanied by parents. Supervision begins when staff commence duty at 8:30am, and the safety and wellbeing of our students remains our highest priority. We thank you for supporting us in keeping all students safe.
Wellbeing and Social Groups
As you are aware, we have been trialling wellbeing and social groups run by Mrs Jelbart this term. These groups have been very successful in providing students with additional support to build confidence, strengthen relationships, and develop important social skills. When your child has been selected to participate, our current process has been to phone parents to discuss the program. Moving forward, we will continue to make a phone call but will also send home a letter of explanation, with the option for parents to opt out if they wish.
We strongly encourage families to take up these opportunities when offered. As a parent, you may feel your child doesn’t necessarily need additional support, but social and emotional growth is an important part of learning and development, and it is often demonstrated differently in the school setting than at home. These programs are designed to complement classroom learning and to help students thrive both socially and academically.
Camden Network Linking Leaders
Last Friday evening and Saturday, leadership teams from across the Camden, Campbelltown, MacArthur and Wollondilly Networks came together for the annual Linking Leaders event. This gathering highlight the commitment of school leaders who give up their own time to share the incredible work they are doing in innovation and education. We are so proud of our own team who represented Appin PS this year — Mrs Hawkins, Mr McCloskey, Mrs Mathers and Mr Earnshaw. Their presentations were a real credit to our school, showcasing the quality of leadership and the dedication to student success that defines our community.
Public Speaking
Congratulations to our amazing public speaking students — you were absolutely fabulous! Public speaking is no easy task and it takes real courage to stand up and share your voice, so well done to all participants. Special congratulations to our class winners and stage winners — we wish you the very best of luck as you move on to the next level of competition. A big thank you also goes to Mrs Mason for her organisation and commitment in making this opportunity possible for our students.
Thank You to Our P&C
A huge thank you to our wonderful P&C members for their ongoing commitment and support of our school community. From running the Father’s Day stall to preparing for the upcoming Wheels Festival on the 21st September, their organisation and energy are nothing short of amazing. I’m gutted I can’t be there this year, but I’ll certainly be thinking of you all on the day. Our P&C are simply incredible, and I encourage everyone to come along, get involved, and be part of the fun.
Have a fabulous weekend.
Mrs Collins
Last week we celebrated National Literacy and Numeracy Week across our school. Each day, classes were given fun challenges to solve that encouraged students to think critically, problem-solve and apply their literacy and numeracy skills in creative ways. It was fantastic to see students thinking outside the box, collaborating with their peers and showing persistence when faced with tricky tasks. The excitement and enthusiasm in classrooms and playground discussions highlighted just how much our students enjoy stretching their thinking.
This week, I have been visiting classrooms to observe how teachers are transferring their professional learning into practice, particularly in the area of high-impact strategies to support reading fluency. It has been wonderful to see teachers confidently applying these approaches and students fully engaged in their learning. I have attached some photos below capturing both our teachers in action and students enjoying these rich learning experiences.
Professional Learning in Numeracy and Literacy
Over the past few weeks, our stage teams of teachers have been engaged in professional learning focused on deepening our collective understanding of additive thinking and its foundational role in student numeracy development.
Through data-informed discussions, hands-on strategies, and high-impact teaching practices such as Number Talks, teachers are working to enhance student outcomes and confidence in mathematics across the school.
Maths Myth Buster (For Parents!)
“Some kids are just not ‘maths people.’”
🚫 Myth! Research shows that every child can be successful in mathematics when given the right strategies and opportunities to explore. Just like learning to read, mathematical thinking develops step by step, with additive thinking forming one of the most important building blocks.
💡 Fun fact to try at home: Ask your child how many ways they can make the number 10.
Encourage them to think beyond “7+3” or “5+5.” (For example: 20–10, 2+2+2+2+2, half of 20). This simple game grows number sense, flexibility, and confidence — and it’s fun to see how creative children can be with numbers!
Stage Snapshot – Learning in Stage 3 (Year 5 & 6)
English: We have been working closely with Mrs Partridge on a high impact reading strategy - Reader’s Theatre. Using our mentor texts, we create scripts and add a new layer of focus each session, including verbal expression, body language, facial expression, and sound effects. Each week, students perform their scripts in front of the class, building confidence and enhancing their reading fluency and comprehension skills.
The stage final for the public speaking competition showcased confident and passionate speakers who impressed the audience with their clear delivery and engaging topics. Congratulations all of our students for presenting a speech, and to our finalists for their outstanding efforts and excellent communication skills.
Mathematics We have been continuing to strengthen our understanding of converting between units of length (millimetres, centimetres, metres, kilometres) and mass (kilograms and tonnes). A highlight was measuring the perimeter of various buildings around the school, applying our conversion skills in a real-world context.
Peer Support: Sessions have been thriving, with students growing their leadership capabilities and fostering strong connections throughout the school community. It’s wonderful to see our learners supporting one another and developing valuable life skills.

Stage Snapshot – Learning in Stage 2 (Year 2, 3 & 4)
Over the past two weeks, Stage 2 students have been busy learning, creating, and achieving in many areas of their learning.
English
Students in Year 2, 3 and 4 have been participating in class speeches as part of the Regional Public Speaking competition. Each student worked hard to meet the requirements of structure, voice projection, and persuasion. Two students from each class were selected to represent their peers, and we congratulate all students on their efforts and confidence in presenting their speeches. We have also begun exploring the mentor text The Little Refugee by Anh Do. Students have been learning how an author’s perspective and context can shape a story and create a deeper connection with the audience. They have also been identifying themes within the text and discussing how colours and images help to convey meaning. Working in groups, students have provided evidence from the story to justify their interpretations of theme.
Creative Arts,
Students have been exploring tone and levels in music through The Sound of Music. They have been discovering how tempo influences movement and have used this understanding to guide the dances they create.
History
Students have been learning about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art and culture. They have explored the importance of symbols in artwork and how these are used to share stories and record history.
Technology
The students of Stage 2 have been fortunate to receive new laptops, moving us closer to a 1:1 device ratio. With these devices, students have been developing their word processing skills and consolidating their mathematical learning through the Maths Online program. The activities are carefully designed to meet the differentiated needs of each student, with tasks aligned to their current learning within the teaching and learning cycle.
Stage 2 students have shown fantastic focus and creativity across all subject areas, and we are proud of their continued growth and enthusiasm for learning.

Stage Snapshot – Learning in Stage 1
Our Kindergarten and Year 1 students had a fantastic time participating in the Athletics Carnival. It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm, teamwork, and sportsmanship on display throughout the day. A big thank you to our staff, families, and helpers who supported the event and cheered on our students – your encouragement made the day so special!
Students in Years 1 and 2 continue to participate in a child protection lesson focused on understanding personal safety. These lessons help students identify safe and unsafe situations, including understanding that private parts are private, recognise trusted adults they can turn to, and practise ways to say “no” if they ever feel uncomfortable. Through stories and role-play, students explore the importance of speaking up and learned strategies to keep themselves safe in different environments.
During CAPA stage 1 students have been enjoying their weekly dance lessons, developing confidence, coordination, and rhythm through movement. The sessions focus on building fundamental skills, exploring creative expression, and working together as a group. Students have loved learning new routines and using dance as a fun and energetic way to stay active.
During STEM stage 1 students have been introduced to the basics of coding through fun, hands-on activities. They have been learning how to create simple sequences, spot patterns, and use logical thinking to solve problems. Coding lessons encourage creativity, teamwork, and persistence as students explore how digital technologies work and how they can use them to design their own interactive projects.
Students across stage 1 have been engaging in paired reading to help improve their reading fluency. Working with a partner, they take turns reading aloud, supporting each other to practise expression, accuracy, and pace. This strategy builds confidence, encourages collaboration, and helps students develop a deeper understanding of the text while becoming more fluent, independent readers.

Stage Snapshot – Learning in Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten)
What a busy fortnight it has been in Kindergarten! With so many wonderful events and learning experiences, time is flying by and we can hardly believe how quickly the end of term is approaching. Our students have shown enthusiasm and resilience as they participate in activities both inside and outside the classroom.
We were delighted to celebrate the success of our recent K/1 Athletics Carnival! It was wonderful to see so many enthusiastic students participating with great energy and sportsmanship. A heartfelt thank you to all the parents and community members who attended and supported the children throughout the day. Your encouragement truly made the event special and memorable for everyone involved.
Last week, our students also enjoyed an incursion about electrical safety. Through interactive demonstrations and discussions, they learned important safety tips like staying away from power outlets and not touching electrical cords. We encourage families to remind students about these important safety rules while at home to help keep them safe.
In English, our focus has been on developing narrative skills through exploring picture books rich in imagery. Students have been learning to use time connectives to sequence events clearly in their writing, helping their stories to flow smoothly. Additionally, we continue to build strong phonic knowledge, which supports confident reading and spelling.
In Mathematics, Number Talks have been a key part of our learning, encouraging students to develop mental strategies for solving problems and to articulate their thinking clearly. For our Kindergarten learners, we have been exploring the concept of length, comparing objects to understand measurement in a hands-on way.
Thank you again for your ongoing support—we look forward to more exciting learning experiences ahead!

Hi Everyone! I’m Jess, your Prime Minister and this is my wrap-up!
Recently, I was lucky enough to have an interview with Mr Hennessey. A big thank you to Mr Jordan for filming us. In the interview, I spoke about what we do in Culture Group and some of the goals we want to achieve, as I am a proud Gamilaroi girl.
As you may have seen, we now have a brand new Ninja Warrior course, which was officially opened on our Open Day a few weeks ago. I hope everyone who came along had an amazing time.
Congratulations also to all the Ambarvale art competition winners - you did such a great job and your artworks look amazing!
A huge shoutout to our Southern Stars dancers performed in front of thousands of spectators 2 weeks ago at the Wollongong Entertainment Centre. It was an amazing experience and one that we will never forget! It was such a buzz dancing in front of all those people!
Have an awesome rest of term 3.
Jess out!
Parliament has been really successful this year, and it has been an honour to lead as your Speaker. So far, 15 great ideas have been presented and 9 of them have been passed in Parliament. Some of the ideas that have already happened include Spider Friday, Pyjama Day, our whole-school SRC program and Summer Gala Days. This shows that EVERY student has a voice and that Parliament really matters!
The SRC are also now playing an active role in decision-making. They’ve been bringing class feedback to minister meetings and will now have a formal role in Parliament moving forward.
As the Eco Minister, I’m excited to share some updates from our Eco Committee. Over the past couple of months, we’ve been holding meetings about ways we can improve our school gardens. We even have a professional coming in soon to give us ideas on how to make our gardens more beautiful and sustainable.
We also took part in Plant a Tree Day recently, and it’s great to see our new tree already growing well. Another important reminder is that our SRC have noticed litter around the school. We can all do better by making sure our rubbish goes straight into the bins. Together, we can keep our school clean and green!
This term has been really busy with fundraising at Appin PS. Our Pyjama Day was lots of fun and we raised $248. Soon after, we had our Walkathon which was a big success, raising about two and a half thousand dollars! A huge thank you to everyone who joined in and helped out.
We’ve got some exciting events coming up. On 21 September we’ll have our famous Wheels Festival, and on 14 November we’ll hold Diabetes Day to raise awareness and support for people in our community.
Thanks again to all the students, families and teachers who get behind these events – you make a big difference!
Over the month, we have had a huge amount of sporting opportunities. We finished off our athletics program with the 1500m and 800m races. It was a really successful way to wrap things up. Last week, on September 2nd and 3rd, our athletics squad attended the Zone Athletics Championships – for the 5th year in a row, Appin took out the championship! Well done to everyone who gave their best effort.
Make sure to keep an eye out for Summer Gala Day sport selections next week. This was passed by our School Parliament, and we’re excited to be competing in these sports next term.
Hi, my name is Emily and I’m your Culture and Communication Minister for 2025. Last week, Stage 3 performed two songs: Country Tells Us When (our whole school song) and From Little Things Big Things Grow (our Stage 3 song). This was part of our Busking for Change assembly, which raised money to support Indigenous Literacy initiatives.
Also, you may have seen Mr Jordan, a professional videographer, around our school recently. He’s been filming and taking photos, and we’re really excited to see our new school promotional video once he has finished putting it all together - so keep an eye out!
What an extraordinary achievement! For the fifth consecutive year, Appin Public School has proudly claimed the title of Zone Athletics Champions.
Our students were truly inspiring - not only in their athletic performance, but in the way they carried themselves throughout the entire day. Their respect, politeness, sportsmanship, camaraderie and support for one another were on display at every turn. Whether cheering for their teammates, congratulating their opponents, or pushing through tiredness, injuries, and adversity, our students rose to every challenge with resilience and pride.
A special congratulations to our outstanding athletes:
Maddison B – Age Champion and record breaker in Senior Girls High Jump and 1500m (both long-standing records broken!).
Karim O – Age Champion and record breaker in the 800m and 1500m (records standing for over 30 years shattered!).
Riley L – Age Champion, showcasing grit and determination.
We extend our sincere thanks to Campbelltown PSSA for hosting another brilliantly organised Athletics Championships.
It was an honour and privilege to watch our amazing students in action - champions not just in results, but in character!
Zone certificates will be presented at next week's assembly.
We are also proud to announce that 18 of our students have qualified for the Regional Championships next Wednesday - we cannot wait to see them shine at the next level!
Congratulations again to every student in our squad - your effort, attitude and achievements make our whole community proud.
We are pleased to share that our recent Busking for Change assembly, held in support of Indigenous Literacy Day, was a great success. Each class performed their song beautifully, and it was wonderful to see the variety of music and the effort students put into their performances.
We sincerely thank all families who contributed donations to support the Indigenous Literacy Foundation. Your generosity helps make a meaningful difference.
