Week 5 & 6 of Term 3
One of my favourite parts of the day is being out on the gate, welcoming our students as they arrive. There is nothing better than seeing their smiles, hearing their chatter, and starting the day with such positive energy. While I can’t be on the gate every morning, I will always do my best to be there on Mondays and Fridays, so I can connect with our children and families at the start and end of the week. Appin Public School truly is a wonderful place to learn and grow, and I am so proud of the sense of community we share together.
Our Newsletter Focus
Thank you to our P&C and families for the great feedback about our newsletter. One suggestion raised was that the content can sometimes feel a little too full, so together we brainstormed ways to keep the newsletter clear, engaging, and easy to read, while still ensuring our school community is well-informed about everything happening at Appin PS.
Our regular Stage Learning Overviews from the Assistant Principals will continue, as parents have shared how valuable these are for starting conversations with your children about their learning however instead of sharing everything we will have Newsletter features:
Here’s a snapshot of what to expect in Term 4
Week 4: Feature Class – Kindergarten
Week 6: Executive Leaders Projects
Week 8: Student Leadership & SRC
Week 10: Term Wrap-Up
Alongside these features, you can always expect to see:
Attendance updates (a Premier’s Priority)
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) focus
VIP Awards (previously “Aussie of the Month”)
Appin in Action & Highlights celebrating learning and achievements across the school
We truly appreciate your continued support in reading and engaging with our newsletter each fortnight. Together, we are building strong connections between school and home, and celebrating the many wonderful achievements of our students.
Learning & Support
At Appin Public School, we are continuing to strengthen our Learning & Support processes to ensure that every child receives the right help at the right time. As part of these improvements, all referrals to the School Counselling Service will now be facilitated through our Learning & Support Team. This streamlined approach allows us to coordinate support more effectively and ensure clear communication between families, staff, and services. If you have any concerns about your child’s learning or wellbeing, please contact the school office and our Learning & Support Team will guide you through the referral process.
Aboriginal Education
Last week, Mr Henesey and I attended the combined network meeting, where the focus was on Aboriginal Education. It was a valuable opportunity to reflect on the authentic ways we are embedding Aboriginal perspectives into teaching and learning at Appin PS, and to consider how we can continue to strengthen this work moving forward. The discussions were engaging, the collaboration across schools was inspiring, and it was wonderful to see the collective commitment to delivering Aboriginal Education in a way that is respectful, meaningful, and impactful for all students.
Have a wonderful weekend everyone.
Mrs Collins
This fortnight, our professional learning is centred on improving reading fluency across the school. This focus comes in response to our Year 3 and Year 5 NAPLAN reading results, which highlight comprehension as a key area of need. Reading fluency is essential because it acts as a bridge to comprehension. When students read smoothly and with expression, they are better able to understand and engage with texts. Teachers will be trialling high-impact strategies such as readers theatre and echo reading in classrooms. These approaches help students build confidence, accuracy and expression in their reading. We are excited to see how these strategies support our learners and will continue to refine our practice to ensure every student experiences success in reading.
We are pleased to share the strong results from this year’s Year 1 Phonics Screening Check, with 82% of students on track with their phonic knowledge, a significant uplift of 12% from last year. This improvement is a direct reflection of the skill, dedication and collaborative effort of both the 2024 Kindergarten team: Mr Sylwestrzak, Ms Lewis and Ms Paxton, and this year’s Year 1 teachers: Mr Sylwestrzak, Miss Kingston and Mrs Matthews. These results highlight the impact of high-quality, explicit teaching and the way our teachers consistently apply professional learning to classroom practice. Their focus on strong foundational skills is setting students up for long-term success in reading.
Next week, we will be celebrating National Literacy and Numeracy Week! It is a wonderful opportunity to shine a spotlight on the importance of literacy and numeracy in our daily lives. In the classroom, teachers will be engaging students in a variety of fun literacy and numeracy games designed to reinforce key skills in an enjoyable way.
To keep the learning going at home, I have attached some simple activities you can try with your child.
Curriculum Reform Update and Professional Learning
At Appin Public School, our teachers have been actively engaging with the new Creative Arts syllabus as part of broader curriculum reforms across all key learning areas. These changes aim to enrich our students’ learning experiences by fostering creativity, critical thinking, and practical skills in dance, drama, music, and visual arts. By exploring these updated learning areas, our staff are developing strategies and resources to inspire and support every child’s growth. We are excited to bring these innovative approaches into the classroom to help nurture a lifelong love of learning and creativity in all our students.
The Department’s Check-in Assessments
The NSW Department of Education’s Check-in Assessments are underway to regularly monitor student progress in reading and numeracy. These short, focused assessments help teachers quickly identify how well students are understanding key skills and concepts. The information gained allows teachers to provide timely, targeted support tailored to each child’s needs. Check-in Assessments are important because they ensure that any learning gaps are addressed early, helping all students to succeed and build confidence in their learning journey.
We are all learners at Appin Public School!
Stage Snapshot – Learning in Stage 3 (Year 5 & 6)
Classroom Learning Updates
English
Stage 3 students have been busy exploring characterisation in our novel study of August and Jones, diving into how authors develop memorable characters and the ways we connect with their journeys.
Mathematics
In mathematics, students are strengthening their multiplicative thinking by learning a range of strategies for multiplication and division, including how to use the distributive property to solve problems efficiently.
Other Key Learning Areas
Our history lessons have focused on the development of Australian colonies, sparking thoughtful discussions about how communities change and grow. In science, students have been investigating the forces that shape our world, conducting hands-on experiments to explore concepts such as gravity, friction, and magnetism.
It’s been a fantastic term of learning across all areas so far. We look forward to the rest of the term!

Stage Snapshot – Learning in Stage 2 (Year 2, 3 & 4)
Stage 2 have had a fantastic start to second half of term with engaging learning experiences across all subject areas.
English
We have begun studying the mentor texts The Little Refugee and We Are Australians. Through these texts, students are developing an understanding of how authors use perspective and context to connect with key themes. They are also creating multimodal historical accounts and free verse poetry, drawing on their personal, social, and cultural contexts to explore their own identity. Over the next five weeks, our focus will shift to exploring a variety of poetic devices to support the writing of original poetry pieces.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students have been learning how to identify inverse operations through the saying “If I know one, I know four.” This has helped strengthen their number sense and problem-solving strategies. We have also been exploring the concept of Mass, comparing the weight of different objects and making connections to real-life situations.
Wellbeing
In Week 4, Stage 2 enjoyed a visit from Healthy Harold. This session focused on relationships, including recognising social settings and cues to help us build safe and respectful connections with others.
Stage 2 have been busy practising both our class song and the whole-school song in preparation for the Busking for Change event, which will be held in the hall in Week 7. Students have been working hard to develop their singing skills and are doing a fantastic job. We look forward to seeing you there and are excited to showcase our performances.
Stage 2 students continue to show curiosity, persistence, and collaboration in their learning. We are looking forward to an exciting few weeks ahead!

Stage Snapshot – Learning in Stage 1
In English Year 1 students are engaging with the book 'Boy' to explore themes of kindness, understanding, and acceptance. Through shared reading and discussion, students are developing their comprehension skills by identifying the main ideas and key events in the story. They are also learning to make personal connections by reflecting on how the characters’ actions show empathy and respect. Activities include sequencing events, describing characters, and using the text as a model to create their own sentences about friendship and caring for others. This learning experience supports vocabulary development, oral language skills, and positive social interactions in the classroom.
During math lessons Year 1 students are actively participating in Number Talks to build their confidence and flexibility with numbers. During these sessions, students share and explain different strategies for solving problems, such as using doubles, making tens, and counting on. This encourages mathematical reasoning, clear communication, and the ability to justify their thinking. By listening to and discussing multiple approaches, students develop a deeper understanding of number relationships and improve their mental computation skills in a supportive, collaborative environment.
Year 1 students also enjoyed a visit from Healthy Harold, who delivered an engaging lesson about the importance of friendships. Through fun activities and discussions, students learned how to be a good friend, show kindness, and resolve conflicts in positive ways. The session highlighted the value of respect, empathy, and including others, helping students understand how strong friendships contribute to their overall wellbeing and happiness.

Stage Snapshot – Learning in Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten)
What an exciting fortnight it has been! Our students were absolutely thrilled to welcome Healthy Harold in the Life Education Van. The visit was filled with fun and engaging activities that helped our children learn about being kind friends. We also celebrated Book Week, enjoying a range of activities that sparked a love of reading and storytelling throughout the school. The Book Week parade was a highlight, with students showcasing unique and creative costumes that brought their favourite characters to life. Smiling faces filled the playground as everyone enjoyed the vibrant and joyful celebration.
In our classrooms, we have focused our learning on how to subtract numbers using concrete materials. These hands-on tools allow children to visualise and physically manipulate numbers, making abstract ideas more understandable. Over the next few weeks, we will introduce strategies like counting back and other methods to deepen their understanding. Concrete materials will continue to be a priority, as they play a vital role in early numeracy to build a strong foundation for future mathematical learning. We have also begun exploring the idea of making equal groups, which serves as an early introduction to division. Students have enjoyed equally sharing collections of objects to form groups with the same number in each.
In English, we have been exploring characters in narratives by reading engaging books such as No Never and The Invisible Boy. These stories provide rich opportunities for students to understand characters’ feelings, motivations and actions. Alongside this, we are focusing on building our students’ vocabulary to make their writing more interesting. By exploring synonyms for common words such as said, good, bad, big and little, students are learning to choose more descriptive and varied words in their writing. Parents can support this learning at home by pointing out these words and their alternatives in books you read together or during everyday conversations. This simple practice helps children expand their vocabulary and develop stronger communication skills.
We are incredibly proud of the progress our students are making and look forward to more exciting learning adventures ahead! Recently, students have also been learning a special song in preparation for our upcoming Busking for Change event. We hope you can make it!

🏀 Carolyn Selected for Basketball NSW Talented Athlete Program 🏀
Earlier this month, our very own Stage 3 student, Carolyn, was selected to attend the Basketball NSW Under-13 Talented Athlete Program Camp at Penrith Regional Sports Centre. This prestigious program brings together just 25 of the most promising basketballers from across the Sydney metro region, making Carolyn’s selection an outstanding achievement.
The camp, run by Basketball NSW, is designed to develop the state’s best junior athletes and is led by highly regarded Australian basketball coaches. Carolyn embraced the opportunity with gratitude and determination, representing herself, her family, our school, and our community with pride, humility, and grace.
Following the camp, Carolyn received glowing praise from the Coaching and Development Manager, who highlighted her character, effort, and kindness - qualities that make us especially proud.
We wish Cally every success in her basketball journey ahead. With her talent, work ethic, and values, it’s easy to imagine a bright future - perhaps even one day in the WNBA!
🏃♂️ Karim Shines at the Australian Cross Country Championships 🏃♂️
Last weekend, Karim travelled with his family to Ballarat, Victoria, to compete in the Australian Cross Country Championships. Lining up against the very best middle and long-distance runners in the nation, Karim produced an outstanding performance in the Under-11s race, finishing 28th in Australia over the gruelling 2km course.
This incredible result places Karim inside the top 30 runners in the country for his age group - an achievement that reflects his hard work, dedication, and humble spirit. True to form, Karim competed fiercely but with the humility and sportsmanship we so often see from him.
To top off an already memorable weekend, Karim even had the chance to meet former Olympian Steve Moneghetti - a photo that perfectly captures the moment: a former Australian Olympian alongside a future one!
We could not be prouder of Karim for representing himself, his family, and Appin PS with such determination and pride.
Next Tuesday and Wednesday, Mr Earnshaw and Ms Duggan will accompany a squad of 42 students proudly representing Appin Public School at the Zone Athletics Championships. Our school athletics program has now wrapped up, with the final 1500m event held on Tuesday.
Our athletes have trained with determination and commitment, and they are ready to take on the best from across our area. The Appin team will be striving to secure an incredible fourth consecutive Zone Athletics Championship.
We wish the very best of luck to all of our talented athletes - your hard work and school spirit make us proud!
PSSA Gala Day #4 will be held in Term 3, Week 8, Friday, 12 September, 2025.

Soccer players are to have soccer boots and shinpads. Gala Day socks are available to purchase for $14.00 from the front office. Students will be transported to the various grounds by seat belted buses. The bus will depart school at 8:45am sharp and return to school by 3:00pm. Parents are welcome to attend.
On Monday, the students of Appin Public School took part in our annual Book Parade, celebrating this year’s theme Book an Adventure. The playground came alive with colour and creativity as students proudly showcased their adventure characters in a range of incredible costumes.
The parade began with our Year 6 students walking hand in hand with their Kindergarten buddies—a wonderful tradition that was enjoyed by all. From explorers and travellers to characters who embark on epic journeys in their stories, the costumes truly captured the spirit of adventure.
The event was made even more special with lively music and the fantastic compering of Nixon and Emiline, two of our dedicated library monitors. Their energy and enthusiasm helped make the day memorable.
It was a fun-filled celebration of reading, imagination, and creativity. We hope our guests enjoyed the event as much as we did!
On Tuesday, four of our Stage 3 students, Eliana, Oscar, Oliver and Kohan represented our school at the Interschools Chess Challenge Semi-final at Canley Vale. Each student demonstrated great focus, determination and skill throughout the day. They should all be very proud of their efforts and the way they represented our school.
Magee
Celebrating Learning in Our Classroom
Magee has had an exciting and productive term, making significant improvements across all areas of learning. We’ve enjoyed engaging with our community during Open Day and Book Week, and we love sharing our work, classroom, and learning experiences with our families.
Students have been investigating growing and shrinking patterns in Mathematics, learning how to represent these sequences using tables and apply them to make predictions. They have also been strengthening their understanding of two- and three-digit place value, gaining confidence in reading, writing, and breaking down numbers.
In English, students have been exploring the text Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley, focusing on identifying and using subordinating conjunctions to enhance their own writing with more complex and detailed sentences. They have also been examining the story through the lens of perspective and context, considering how characters’ viewpoints and background shape the meaning of the text.
This term, we have also started fluency pairs, using a "Good Fit Book." Students enhance their fluency by reading a familiar book aloud to their partner, with each student taking on the role of "coach" to provide feedback and suggest ways to improve their partner’s reading fluency.
In PD/H/PE, Magee recently participated in a fun and engaging activity that helped them explore what makes them similar to and different from their classmates, fostering a stronger sense of identity and belonging. We also had a great time learning about the qualities of a good friend during our visit to Healthy Harold.
Magee did a brilliant job at showcasing their dancing talents at assembly.
