Week 3 & 4 of Term 3
Public Education Education Week
Public Education Week was a fantastic celebration of learning, community, and connection at Appin PS! We were excited to launch our new Instagram account, giving families another window into the great things happening at our school. Our Open Classrooms were a huge success, with families joining us to see learning in action and share in the joy of student achievement. The launch of our Ninja Warrior course brought plenty of excitement and energy to the playground, while our assembly was a special moment to come together, celebrate our students, and share our cultural connections with the whole school community. Thank you to all our teachers and staff for your incredible efforts in making the week so special. For those who couldn’t make it, I’d like to share my Principal’s Address so you can enjoy the messages and celebrations from the day.
Principal’s Address – Public Education Week Assembly
Theme: Ignite Your Potential
Good afternoon students, staff, families, and special guests,
It’s such a joy to welcome you all to our Open Day and Special Assembly as we celebrate Public Education Week — a time where we pause to reflect on the power of learning, community, and the opportunities we provide for every child to thrive.
This year’s theme, “Ignite Your Potential,” is something we live and breathe here at Appin Public School. Every day, in every classroom, on every playground, and in every small moment, there are sparks — those exciting glimpses of growth, curiosity, kindness, and courage.
Earlier this term, we celebrated 101 Days of Learning with our Kindergarten students — what a fantastic milestone! Seeing them all dressed up, laughing, and proudly walking into school reminded us that potential starts early. It grows with support, with care, and with joy.
Our Student Leaders have continued to demonstrate their leadership potential, guiding and supporting our newly elected SRC members during their very first Student Council Meeting this week. Their encouragement, organisation and pride in representing their peers is a true reflection of what leadership at Appin looks like.
To all the students who put their hand up to be part of the SRC — even if you weren’t elected this time — please don’t give up. Putting yourself forward takes courage, and there will always be more opportunities ahead. SRC roles are reviewed each semester, so your chance to lead may be just around the corner. Keep believing in yourself, because leadership comes in many forms — and your voice matters.
To our dedicated teaching and non-teaching staff, thank you for sparking wonder and helping every child find their voice, their confidence, and their path. Your commitment to supporting the potential of our students and our school community is extraordinary. The dedication and passion you bring to your work each day is truly inspiring. Appin Public School is a very special place to be part of — and that’s because of the people who make it what it is.
To our incredible P&C, thank you for your constant support. Whether it’s a gala day, a sausage sizzle, or advocating for what our school needs — your commitment helps ignite the potential not just in our students, but across our whole school community.
Appin Public School is a place where every student matters — where every spark is seen, and where every child is encouraged to discover what makes them special. That’s the true heart of public education.
So today, as we share performances, learning, and laughter, let’s remember: we’re not just celebrating what our students can do — we’re celebrating everything they’re becoming.
Happy Public Education Week — let’s keep igniting that potential, together.
Have a great weekend everyone.
Mrs Collins
Last week, our school was buzzing with excitement as we celebrated Public Education Week. At our Open Day Assembly, we were treated to outstanding performances by our Choir and presentations by our Cultural Group, Multicultural Group and Student Leaders, showcasing the diversity and talent of our students.
A huge congratulations to our FLAME Award recipients:
Ivy H, Kiran H, Jett W, Kyah H, Avah M, Elizabeth M, Aiden M, Lachlan M, Scarlett N, Archie R, Trinity N, Koby W, Mila B and Trinity B.
The following students were recognised for their physical potential in sport: Maddison B, Carolyn H, Lawson C, Finn H, Karim O and David V.
Billie T and Amelia B were recognised for their creative potential in visual art.
I am pleased to share our sausage sizzle raised $212.15, with all proceeds generously donated to Stewart House.
This week, I have commenced the Year 1 Phonics Screening Check and it has been pleasing to see students confidently applying their phonic knowledge. This reflects the impact of the explicit teaching taking place in our Kindergarten and Year 1 classrooms.
Here's another phonics activity you can try at home or even when you are in the car:
Take turns at saying a word and coming up with a word that rhymes. For example, if you say ‘bag’ the next word could be ‘flag’. Remember words that rhyme sound the same at the end of the word.
It’s been an exciting term in our Maths Legends and Reading Rockstars programs, with students making fantastic progress and showing a genuine enthusiasm for learning.
In Maths Legends, our focus has been on building multiplicative thinking. Students are investigating arrays and exploring how we can group numbers, laying the groundwork for understanding multiplication. By visualising numbers in rows and columns, students are not only seeing the ‘how’ of multiplication, but also the ‘why’—creating a strong foundation for future mathematical concepts. It’s been wonderful to see students sharing strategies, working together, and building confidence in their mathematical thinking.
Over in Reading Rockstars, we’ve dived deep into comprehension skills and explored a range of information texts. One of the highlights has been deconstructing a Honey Pancakes recipe. Students enjoyed breaking down the text together, discussing instructions and ingredients. The learning didn’t stop in the classroom—some students took the recipe home, made their own pancakes, and brought them in to share with the group. This hands-on experience helped reinforce both their reading and life skills, and created a wonderful sense of belonging in our groups.

Education Week Highlights and Classroom Learning Updates
We recently celebrated a fantastic Education Week, which was a wonderful opportunity to welcome so many parents into our Stage 3 classrooms. It was inspiring to see students take the lead, guiding their parents through engaging activities and sharing their learning journeys with pride.
In Mathematics, our focus has been on understanding area. Students have been developing skills to estimate, round, and measure square metres confidently. We are now beginning to explore larger units of measurement, such as hectares, expanding their practical understanding of area in real-world contexts.
In English, students have been honing their writing skills by creating descriptive pieces. Emphasis has been placed on using precise vocabulary, writing from a first-person narrative perspective, and incorporating figurative language to bring their stories and descriptions to life.
We also had an exciting 2-6 Athletics Carnival, where students demonstrated great enthusiasm and sportsmanship in a variety of events. It was fantastic to see their energy and team spirit on display throughout the day.
Thank you to all the parents who joined us during Education Week and continue to support your children's learning and participation in school activities.

What a Fabulous Fortnight!
We have had such a wonderful two weeks of learning, fun, and community connections!
Our students thoroughly enjoyed participating in the Years 2–6 Athletics Carnival. It was fantastic to see every student showing great skill, effort, and sportsmanship throughout the day.
In Week 3, we celebrated Education Week with students and families. Stage 2 students proudly showcased their learning in mathematics, English, and technology. Parents, grandparents, and family members joined us for some engaging, hands-on activities, which created lots of smiles and laughter. The art gallery was a highlight, displaying stunning student artworks inspired by the theme “How Students Ignite Their Passion.” We were incredibly proud of the creativity and originality in each piece.
In English, Stage 2 students have been building their writing skills with a special focus on punctuation, using our new Punctuation Pyramid to explore different levels of punctuation. We have also continued reading The Callers, creating character descriptions and inferring the meaning behind characters’ actions to better understand their emotions and personalities.
In Mathematics, we have been exploring two-dimensional shapes, symmetry, and transformations. Using the MathsOnline program, students have completed fun activities to reinforce their understanding of how shapes can translate, transform, and transition between positions. They have also enjoyed hands-on tasks to recreate images and demonstrate their learning.
It has been an exciting and productive fortnight, and we are looking forward to continuing to grow, learn, and share more wonderful experiences in the weeks ahead.

Last week, our school joined together to celebrate Education Week, recognising the importance of learning, growth, and community. Students, staff, and families participated in a range of activities that showcased our students’ talents and achievements, while highlighting the joy of learning. It was a wonderful opportunity to reflect on how education shapes our future and to celebrate the dedication of our teachers, the curiosity of our students, and the support of our community.
Stage 1 students have been exploring growing and shrinking patterns in Mathematics, learning to represent these sequences in tables and use them to make predictions. They have also been developing their understanding of two- and three-digit place value, building confidence in reading, writing, and partitioning numbers.
In English, students have been engaging with the text Pearl Barley and Charlie Parsley to identify and use subordinating conjunctions in their own writing, creating more complex and detailed sentences. They have also been analysing the story through the lens of perspective and context, considering how characters’ viewpoints and background information influence meaning.
During PDHPE, students are learning about how their bodies change over time and the factors that make each person unique. They are exploring the physical, emotional, and social changes that occur as they grow, and celebrating the qualities and characteristics that make them special.

During Public Education Week, our classrooms came alive with excitement and discovery as we opened our classrooms to families and friends, hosted a vibrant Art Expo, and launched our new Ninja Warrior course. We enjoyed welcoming you all back for Open Classrooms to witness the inspiring learning environments across Kindergarten. Since the unveiling of the Ninja Warrior Course, Kindergarten students have enjoyed being taken to have a turn during sport and will be invited to use it during breaks on Mondays.
Our learning themes this week focused on deepening students’ understanding across key subject areas. In Science, students explored the fascinating worlds of Earth and space, investigating natural phenomena and our place in the universe. History lessons invited students to delve into personal and family histories, helping them connect with their roots and appreciate the stories that shape their identities.
Mathematics classes focused on recognising and creating patterns, as well as building strong foundational skills in addition and subtraction. Meanwhile, English lessons immersed students in the art of narrative writing through the exploration of fairy tales, with a special emphasis on constructing compound sentences to enhance their storytelling abilities. Last week, students enjoyed exploring recipes during writing and wrote out a recipe for fairy bread. As a treat, teachers organised for the students to create their own fairy bread and they enjoyed eating their creations.
Looking ahead, we are excited to visit Healthy Harold next week where students will focus on friendship and social skills. We are also waiting in anticipation to see the wonderful Book Week costumes during our Book Parade next week.

A massive congratulations to all our students who took part in Monday's Athletics Carnival! Every competitor gave their absolute best, displaying fantastic sportsmanship and team spirit throughout the day. The smiles were big, the cheers were loud, and by the end, there were definitely some tired legs making their way home on the buses!
Next Monday, we will be completing our 800m track event on our school oval. The following Tuesday, August 26th, we will be running our 1500m event.
The Zone Athletics Championships are on September 2nd & 3rd at Campbelltown Athletics Stadium. Mr Earnshaw and Miss Duggan will be taking our Appin squad to compete against our local schools.
We had two outstanding performances at our athletics carnival on Monday. Firstly, we had a record-breaking moment to remember - Maddie B shattered a 10-year-old Senior Girls High Jump record! The previous mark stood at 129cm, and on Monday Maddie soared over an incredible 140cm. Well done, Maddie!
Secondly, we had a young athlete show courage and determination through adversity. Poppy C severely injured her ankle in the opening stages of her 100m heat. Instead of giving up, she powered through and finished her race in order to earn points for her house. It is this kind of unwavering spirit that we love seeing in our students - a never give up attitude and remarkable resilience!
Congratulations to both of these incredible young female athletes!
We still need to complete our Senior Girls Discus event and our 800m and 1500m track events.
Killalea State Park Excursion
Last week, our cultural group students from Years 2-6 enjoyed a memorable excursion to Killalea State Park. The day began with a traditional Smoking Ceremony, followed by ochre body painting. Students then participated in a series of engaging workshops, including bush tucker and traditional medicines, artefacts, and boomerang and spear throwing. These activities provided a rich opportunity for students to deepen their cultural knowledge, connect with traditions, and learn new skills in a hands-on environment. It was a wonderful day of learning, connection, and celebration of culture.
Sims
Celebrating Learning in Our Classroom
This term in Sims, students have been working hard across all areas school!
In Mathematics, we are exploring the properties of quadrilaterals, building our understanding of their edges and vertices. In English, students are developing their spelling skills through memorising high frequency words and exploring the power of persuasive writing through our class text Hey, Little Ant by Phillip and Hannah Hoose. This is a story that encourages empathy and critical thinking.
In Health, Sims students recently took part in a fun and engaging activity where they explored what makes them similar to – and different from – their classmates, helping build a stronger sense of identity and belonging. We are also busy practising for the upcoming Athletics Carnival, showing great enthusiasm and sportsmanship.
In STEM, taught by Mrs Kelly, students have been learning about forces, investigating how objects can be pushed or pulled through hands-on experiments and inquiry-based learning.
We're proud of the growth, curiosity, and effort our Sims students continue to show every day!

Postive Behaviour for Learning - Values in Practice Award
We are excited to introduce our new Positive Behaviour for Learning – Values in Practice (PBL VIP) Award which will replace the current 'Aussie of the Month' award. This initiative aims to recognise and celebrate students who exemplify our school values of being safe, respectful, learners and are directly correlated to our whole school behaviour management system. This is one of the highest honours a student can receive at Appin Public School. The PBL VIP Award acknowledges well-rounded students who uphold these values across all areas of school life in the classroom, on the playground, and within our wider school community.
Each term, one student from Kindergarten to Year 2 and one student from Years 3 to 6 will be selected to receive this award in Week 5 and Week 9 assemblies. Teachers across the school nominate two students who they believe exemplify our values. Recipients will be those who not only meet, but consistently model, the expectations of Appin Public School, setting an outstanding example for others to follow.
We can’t wait to see who will be our very first VIPs!
