Week 1 & 2 of Term 3
Welcome Back
Welcome back to Term 3!
What a fantastic start we’ve had. This term is already shaping up to be a busy one, and we’ve hit the ground running with two action-packed weeks full of fun, learning and wonderful opportunities for our students. It has been fantastic to see everyone returning with such enthusiasm and energy, ready to make the most of the term ahead.
🐾 101 Days of Learning in Kindergarten 🐾
Our Kindergarten students recently celebrated their first 101 days of learning, and what an incredible celebration it was! The children looked adorable dressed as dalmatians, while our creative Kindergarten teachers embraced the theme by dressing as Cruella de Vil and her henchmen – it was a sight to behold.
The morning tea with parents and carers was a beautiful opportunity to connect and celebrate together. Families thoroughly enjoyed visiting classrooms for the class walkthroughs and seeing first hand the wonderful learning taking place. A heartfelt thank you to all the parents and carers who came along and made the day so special – it was clear that everyone had a fantastic time.
Sports Scams – Please Be Aware
We have been made aware of unsolicited approaches from travel or sports companies using the Department of Education’s Representative School Sport Pathway event details to market "elite" sports tours directly to students and their families. There has been a recent increase in complaints to the School Sport Unit regarding these activities.
These approaches typically arrive at schools addressed to students or their parents/carers. Please be aware that these schemes are not endorsed, supported or affiliated with the Department of Education in any way. We ask that families remain vigilant and avoid engaging with these companies or offers.
Learning Walks Across Our School Network
As part of our ongoing commitment to improving teaching and learning, our school recently participated in a network-wide Learning Walk with other local principals. We visited MaryBrooksbank School for Specific Purposes (SSSP) and it was truly inspiring to see the incredible learning opportunities available.
During the visit, we observed classrooms with a focus on explicit teaching practices and how High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) is embedded into everyday learning. It was wonderful to see the high levels of student engagement and the innovative strategies teachers are using to support all learners.
These visits also allow us, as principals, to reflect on our own practices and identify ways we can strengthen teaching and learning back at Appin PS. We came away with many ideas that will help us build on the great work already happening in our classrooms and ensure that every child continues to thrive especially our children with neurodiverse learning needs.
Staffing Updates
We are very pleased to share some exciting staffing news at Appin PS. First, a warm welcome back to Mrs Partridge, who has returned to our team. We are also delighted that Ms Martin will be staying with us and working alongside Mrs Partridge in the Assistant Principal Curriculum and Instruction (APCI) role, ensuring continued support for high-quality teaching and learning across the school.
We also extend a big Appin welcome to Mrs Moncada, who has joined us and will be working on Fridays for the remainder of Semester 2 on Hall. She will be co-teaching with Mr Hennessy and teaching the class while he leads Aboriginal Education and Cultural Group. Please make sure to say hello if you see her around the school – we’re thrilled to have her as part of our community.
Bringing in Food for Birthdays
We have recently been asked by a number of parents about bringing cakes or lollies to school to celebrate children’s birthdays. While we appreciate the sentiment behind this, we must follow the Department of Education’s policy around food brought to school.
To ensure the health and safety of all children, we need to be mindful of allergies and food intolerances, and we cannot always be certain of the ingredients in home-baked or packaged treats. For this reason, we do not allow cupcakes, lolly bags or other food items to be brought in for birthdays.
Instead, we offer two fun and inclusive options for celebrating birthdays at Appin PS:
Popcorn Birthday Baskets
Icy Pole Birthday Buckets
These options ensure every child can celebrate safely and equitably. Thank you for your understanding and support in keeping our school a safe place for all students.
Building Connections with Every Child
At Appin Public School, we are committed to building strong, positive relationships with every child. You may have noticed that sometimes I share a hot chocolate, with students who may not always make the best choices during the day. This is not about rewarding poor behaviour; instead, it is about connection.
For some students, a positive relationship with a trusted adult at school can make all the difference to how they feel and behave. Taking a few minutes to sit with a child, share a warm drink, and have a conversation shows them that they are valued and cared for – even when things haven’t gone perfectly.
This approach is part of trauma-informed and restorative practices. It helps students feel safe, supported, and ready to re-engage in learning. Over time, these small but meaningful moments build trust and belonging, which leads to improved choices and stronger relationships.
Please know that while we work hard to support students, we do not tolerate violent or unsafe behaviours. There are always clear boundaries in place to protect all children and staff. We also recognise that when children share their version of events at home, the details can sometimes be incomplete or inaccurate. If you ever have concerns, we encourage you to contact the school directly so we can provide a full and accurate picture of what has occurred.
It is also very important that children do not see the principal as someone to be feared. I want every student to feel comfortable coming to the office or speaking with me, knowing that they will be listened to and supported. Building this trust means children are more likely to seek help when they need it, and it helps us work together towards positive solutions.
I really appreciate the support of our families as we work together to create a school environment where every child knows they matter.
HALT Assessor Training
This week I had the privilege of participating in HALT (Highly Accomplished and Lead Teacher) assessor training. This training allows me to support teachers who are seeking national certification as Highly Accomplished or Lead Teachers – a rigorous process that recognises and rewards the exceptional work of our educators.
It is a privilege to be part of a system that values and acknowledges the dedication and expertise of teachers across NSW. This process not only celebrates outstanding practice but also strengthens the quality of teaching and learning in every school.
Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL)
As you are aware, we are continuing to align our award system with our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) practices and policy. You may notice some changes to the way our reward systems operate as we refine and improve them to ensure consistency across the school.
Miss Kennedy and Mrs Hawkins, who are leading the implementation of PBL, will continue to provide updates and share all relevant information in the dedicated PBL section of the newsletter later in the Wrap. We appreciate your support as we work to create clear, consistent and positive expectations for all students.
Thank you to all our families for your ongoing support as we kick off what is shaping up to be a fantastic Term 3. We are so proud of the way our students have settled back into school and embraced every opportunity for learning and growth.
As always, please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions, concerns or ideas – working together with our families is what makes our school community so strong. We look forward to another exciting term ahead, filled with connection, learning and achievement for all of our students.
Have a great weekend.
Mrs Collins
Last term, I had the wonderful opportunity to step into the role of relieving principal at Oakdale Public School. It was a rewarding experience and a fantastic chance to grow as a leader. However, it is so good to be back at Appin Public School this term, reconnecting with staff, students and families in my role as APC&I. I am also looking forward to working collaboratively with Ms Martin and drawing upon her expertise as APC&I as we continue to strengthen our whole-school approach to teaching and learning.
Since returning, I have loved being back in classrooms and receiving the warm cuddles from our students. I had to laugh when one student asked, quite seriously, “Where have you been? I haven’t seen you for a year!” It was a sweet reminder of how quickly time passes and how deeply connected we become to the students we work with. I have also been so grateful for the kind words and warm welcome from parents/carers. Your support and friendly smiles have made returning to Appin feel like coming home.
On Wednesday, I was interviewed by the Department of Education about the approaches we have taken as a school to implement the explicit teaching of phonics. This recognition came as a result of our strong uplift in the number of students on track in last year’s Year 1 Phonics Screening Check. This success is a direct reflection of our staff’s commitment to targeted professional learning and the consistent implementation of high-quality phonics routines in our early years classrooms. The film captured during the interview will be used as a valuable resource to support other schools and their leaders in adopting effective phonics teaching strategies.
This term, I will be working closely in the Year 1 classrooms, providing targeted phonics support as students prepare for this year's Year 1 Phonics Screening Check, which is scheduled for midterm. By practising these activities at home, you can help your child strengthen their phonics skills, supporting them to be more confident in becoming independent readers and writers:
Digraph search
Choose lots of different texts to read including stories, poetry and information texts. Search for words which include digraphs (2 letters that represent 1 sound) such as 'sh', 'th', 'ch', 'ck', 'ng', 'ph' and 'wr'. Discuss the sounds and the words when you find them. You can play this game as a trigraph (3 letters that represent 1 sound) search for words that contain 'air', 'ear', 'igh' or 'tch'.
I am also diving into our recent Year 3 and Year 5 NAPLAN data to celebrate areas of growth and help guide our next steps as a school. I will be working closely alongside the executive team to analyse trends, identify focus areas and plan targeted strategies that support ongoing improvement. This analysis will be shared with staff during our upcoming meetings, with the P&C to keep our community informed and featured in our next school newsletter to highlight key successes and areas we are working to strengthen.
In addition, planning is well underway for our upcoming Public Education Week Open Day. I look forward to welcoming families and showcasing the fantastic learning happening at Appin Public School.
It is great to be back!
I am thrilled to share my excitement as I return to Appin Public School for Term 3 and Term 4! My focus during this time will be on supporting the implementation of our curriculum, with a special emphasis on enhancing our mathematics instruction in collaboration with Mrs. Partridge. Together, we will explore strategies and ideas to make learning both engaging and effective for our students.
Targeted Support Groups Taking Off!
I am delighted to report that our targeted support groups are off to a flying start! Students have been actively exploring the purpose of texts and enhancing their reading comprehension skills. This foundational work not only supports their literacy development but also lays a strong groundwork for their mathematical journey.
In mathematics, we are delving into multiplication strategies. We aim to promote multiplicative thinking, which involves understanding how numbers work together to create larger values. This means we are helping students see multiplication to combine groups of equal sizes. This understanding will empower them to tackle more complex maths problems with confidence.
Thank you for your continued support, and I look forward to an exciting and productive term ahead!
Maths Riddle of the Week: Boost Your Child’s Thinking Skills at Home!
Riddles can encourage logical thinking and problem-solving, which are key components of mathematical reasoning. Here's a fun riddle to solve together with your child.
Stage Snapshot – Learning in Stage 3
Welcome back to Term 3! We are excited to share some of the engaging activities and learning experiences that our Stage 3 students have been involved in.
Interrelate Program
This term, students have been participating in the Interrelate program, which focuses on developing their understanding of relationships, growth and development and personal wellbeing.
Peer Support
Students have been undergoing peer support training, in preparation for the Peer Support Program. This initiative encourages students to develop leadership skills and foster a supportive community within our school. Students facilitated their first Peer Support session this week and received great feedback from their peers and staff. Thank you to Mr Earnshaw and Ms Paxton for your organisation and facilitation of this program.
Mathematics
In Mathematics, students have been exploring the place value system, which lays the foundation for understanding larger numbers. They are also delving into negative integers and decimals, enhancing their number sense and problem-solving abilities. We have been exploring the connection between division and multiplication and implementing multiple methods to solve a variety of problems. We encourage you to engage with your child at home by discussing real-life examples where these concepts apply.
English
In English, students are currently reading the text "August and Jones". This unit focuses on building comprehension skills, learning about characterisation, and encourages students to think critically about the text.
We are looking forward to a productive term filled with learning and growth. Thank you for your continued support!

Leadership Focus – School Promotion
As a dedicated member of the Appin Public School community, my role in promoting our school involves actively showcasing our vibrant educational initiatives and fostering a strong connection with both current and prospective students and their families. Currently, I am focused on highlighting our exciting plans for Public Education Week, where we aim to celebrate our achievements and the diverse learning experiences we offer. By sharing information about various activities, assemblies and events that will take place during this week, I strive to engage the community and illustrate the positive impact of public education on our students' growth and development. Through these efforts, I hope to demonstrate Appin Public School's commitment to excellence in education and inspire greater community involvement.
Beyond Public Education week, Mr Earnshaw and I continue to work together on strengthening our partnership with Ambarvale High School, and are in the process of creating a purposeful social media strategy to communicate key initiatives, events and activities that are taking place in our school. We are continuing to develop a school prospectus and pamphlet, to promote our school to prospective students and their families.
Stage Snapshot – Learning in Stage 2
Welcome to Term 3!
We’re thrilled to be back and ready for another exciting term of learning in Stage 2! A big thank you to all the parents and carers who attended our recent parent-teacher interviews. It was wonderful to share your child’s learning progress, celebrate their successes, and talk about the exciting goals ahead.
In English, we’ve kicked off a novel study of The Callers, where students are exploring the fascinating world of characterisation. They’re learning how characters evolve within a story and how authors use detail to bring them to life. Alongside this, we’re continuing to build fluency in reading, strengthen spelling, and explore grammar through writing activities.
In Mathematics, we’re deepening our understanding of number concepts, with a strong focus on addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students are engaging in hands-on activities to develop their number sense and problem-solving skills.

Our Technology Committee, led by Mrs Muntz, is committed to supporting staff through professional learning and helping bring innovative and creative practices into our classrooms. We’re looking forward to an exciting new term full of digital discovery and hands-on learning!
Stage Snapshot – Learning in Stage 1
It was a pleasure to see those who were able to attend the parent-teacher interviews—thank you for your ongoing support.
Over the next fortnight, Stage 1 will be exploring persuasive texts, with a focus on structure, modality, and forming arguments. To support their learning, students will be studying Hey, Little Ant by Phillip and Hannah Hoose.
Students will also continue to build their understanding of letter-sound combinations as they progress through each level. In Reading, the focus will be on developing fluency, with students working towards reading multiple words automatically without needing to decode previously taught vocabulary. Comprehension will also remain a key focus throughout the semester.
Stage 1 students have also begun presenting ‘news’ during the first part of the day to help refine their public speaking skills in preparation for their class speeches in Weeks 7 and 8.
In Mathematics, students will continue to strengthen their number skills by exploring place value in greater depth and applying efficient strategies for addition and subtraction. They will also enhance their problem-solving abilities through ongoing Number Talks and by breaking down worded problems.

This is just the beginning of a delightful journey that will continue throughout Term 3.
Our visits aim to foster a love of reading and build strong connections between our school and the community. Over the coming weeks, Ms. Lewis will be visiting our three local day cares, bringing stories to life and inspiring the children with the joy of books.
In addition to these visits, we are excited to announce that the children from the day cares will also have the opportunity to visit our school library throughout the term. This will provide them with a chance to explore our collection and develop their literacy skills in a fun and engaging environment.
As part of our commitment to continuous improvement, we are preparing a survey for our current kindergarten students to gather their reflections and reviews on our transition to school processes. Your feedback will be invaluable in helping us enhance this experience for future students. This survey will be sent out in the next couple of weeks.
We are in the early stages of planning our Orientation sessions. We encourage you to keep an eye out for more information as we finalise the details in the coming weeks. These orders will be delivered to our school when they visit. Thank you.
Last term, our students had the exciting opportunity to participate in our school parliament, where they exercised their voice and voted to establish a Student Representative Council.
The Student Representative Council (SRC) is a group of students elected by their peers to represent their class and share ideas that will help make our school an even better place. Each class from Stage 1 to Stage 3 will have two SRC members who will meet twice a term with Mrs Collins and the Ministers. These meetings will give students a voice in school decision-making and provide opportunities to work on projects that support our school values.
This initiative was driven by the students’ desire to contribute more actively to school life and have a formal platform to share ideas and improve student voice. As well as meeting with the ministers and Mrs Collins, council members will present motions from their class in parliament, meet regularly as a council to discuss and action the ideas of their peers, work collaboratively on projects that enhance our school community, and have various opportunities to display and develop their leadership skills. To ensure many students have the chance to participate, new SRC members will be elected each semester.
The SRC members for Terms 3 and 4 will be announced in next week's assembly. We are proud of their enthusiasm for leadership and look forward to seeing the positive impact they will have in the coming terms!
The SRC will:
Improve student voice at Appin Public School.
Represent the ideas and opinions of their classmates in SRC meetings.
Develop leadership, teamwork, and public speaking skills through their role.
Work with ministers and school leaders to develop student-led initiatives.
Share important messages and updates with their classmates after SRC meetings.

As part of our commitment to promoting healthy eating habits and supporting our students’ wellbeing, we are excited to remind everyone about our Crunch and Sip program! This initiative encourages students to bring fresh fruits and vegetables to school, which they can enjoy during a designated Crunch and Sip break throughout the day. Crunch and Sip is a great way for students to refuel with nutritious snacks while staying focused and energised for their learning. During these breaks, students can enjoy a variety of fresh produce, which not only contributes to their daily fruit and vegetable intake but also supports their overall health.
Tips for Parents:
Pack a Variety: Encourage your child to bring a mix of their favourite fruits and vegetables. Some easy options include carrot sticks, cucumber slices, apple wedges, and grapes.
Get Creative: Involve your child in choosing and preparing their snacks. This can make them more excited about eating healthy!
Stay Hydrated: Don’t forget to pack a water bottle to keep your child hydrated throughout the day.
