King's Birthday Public Holiday
The school will be closed on Monday, 9th June for the King's Birthday Public Holiday.
Missing in Action
Firstly, my sincerest apologies for being a little less visible than usual around the school these past few weeks. I haven’t run away (though some may have seen me hobbling rather dramatically down the corridor and wondered!). I had a bit of a run-in with one of our horses—he's absolutely fine—but I ended up in a moon boot. Let’s just say… the horse had a soft landing!! While the Appin staff have gracefully kept everything moving, I’ll be slowly making my way back to full strength and back out into the playgrounds soon!
The Wrap Up @Appin
At Appin, we always value and act on the feedback we receive from our parents and carers. While we've received lots of positive feedback about our school newsletter, we also recognise the opportunity to make it even better—more photos, videos, celebrations, and easier navigation so you can jump straight to the sections you’re most interested in. With this in mind, we’ve switched over to Google Sites as our new platform.
For our community, nothing changes in terms of access—you’ll still receive a link to click through and view the newsletter. What you will notice is a refreshed look, a richer mix of interactive content, and even more snapshots of what we’ve been up to and what’s coming next. We hope these changes make our newsletter even more enjoyable to explore. As always, I’ll be seeking feedback to keep improving and to ensure your voices are heard.
Student Voice
In Term 2, we are offering our students the opportunity to participate in the NSW Public Schools Student Survey. The survey gives students the chance to share their thoughts and feelings about life at school, including questions about their engagement, learning experiences and wellbeing at school.
Hearing directly from our students will help us understand what’s working well and where improvements can be made to our school. The survey is confidential, takes around 10 to 15 minutes to complete, and will be conducted online during school hours.
Participation is voluntary. If you prefer your child not to participate, please complete the opt-out consent form, which is available from: Opt-out consent form_English (PDF 324 KB)
and return it to the school asap. Further information about the survey is available at https://education.nsw.gov.au/npss
Award Winners at Appin
Despite my temporary limp, there’s been no slowing down at Appin PS. Recently, we had the incredible honour of watching four of our students take to the stage at the Macarthur Young Champions Awards. Congratulations to Jessica Brennan, Jonathan Azzopardi, Amelia Byers, and Maddison Ball for their outstanding nominations across leadership, community, academics, and sport. Each received a finalist medal to recognise their achievements—and a huge congratulations to all four of them!
Although I wasn’t able to attend the evening due to my injury, I heard how incredible the night was—and how proud our Stage 3 teachers were seeing their students shine. Special thanks to Mrs Hawkins for leading the stage, and to Mrs Paxton and Mr Earnshaw for their contributions in supporting the nominations and preparing the students so beautifully. We were especially thrilled to learn that Jessica Brennan was awarded the Major Award for Community Service and Leadership—a truly special and well-deserved recognition.
Best Practice in Action
We also recently welcomed executive leaders from the ROAST APCI network—a partnership between Rosemeadow, Oakdale, Appin, St Helen’s Park, and The Oaks Public Schools—as part of a leadership learning tour. Our visitors came to observe best practice in action—and that’s exactly what they saw. From our co-teaching models and student engagement strategies to our data-informed approaches and strong values-led culture, staff and students made us all proud. The feedback was overwhelmingly positive and affirmed the outstanding work happening in every corner of our school.
There is so much to be proud of at Appin—and I’m proud to be part of it, boot and all!
Have a great weekend.
Mrs Collins
Congratulations to Jessica Brennan, Jonathan Azzopardi, Amelia Byers, and Maddison Ball
It has been an absolute pleasure to join the Appin PS team this term as the Instructional Leader. I had the opportunity to attend the recent ROAST demonstration day, where I listened to Appin’s story and saw firsthand the incredible impact of the co-teaching initiative in action.
Since stepping into the role, I’ve spent time analysing our school data and identifying areas where we can make the biggest difference. Sometimes, that means pushing students just below the top achievement bands into the next level. For others, it’s about consolidating key concepts, or helping students access areas of learning that require additional support.
Over the coming weeks, we’ll be rolling out small group tuition programs, where students will work with a qualified teacher in focused groups for a 5-week intervention cycle. These groups are created based on a combination of internal and external data, alongside teacher professional judgment.
Groups may change as student needs evolve—this is normal and responsive school practice. So, if your child comes home and says they’re in a small group for reading, writing, or maths, please know:
👉 This is not a label
👉 This is not a problem
👉 This is good teaching
We are committed to ensuring that every child makes progress, and these flexible support structures are just one of the many ways we achieve that. We appreciate your trust in the process and your support as we continue to tailor learning to meet the needs of every student at Appin PS.
Recently, we welcomed executive teams from across our network to Appin PS to observe best practice in action. Visitors had the opportunity to see a range of co-teaching models in our classrooms, showcasing collaboration, high-impact strategies, and strong student engagement. It was a proud moment for our team to share the learning journey we’re on—and to celebrate the incredible work happening in every stage.
In English, students have been reading the book "One Small Island" to explore how different ideas are presented in literature. They have been examining how various genres convey messages about argument and authority. After analysing, students have been using what they've learned to create their own persuasive writing and a unique piece that blends elements from different genres. This approach encourages creativity and helps them develop important writing skills.
During mathematics, students have been learning about how visual tools can help us understand our world, focusing on chance and position. They have been exploring different ways to pinpoint exact locations on a grid, like using Cartesian coordinates and learning that probability is a way to numerically express the likelihood of an event happening, ranging from zero (impossible) to one (certain).
Students have been enjoying learning about the Cartesian plane because as it allows them to engage in hands-on activities, create visual patterns, and see how coordinates can be applied in real-world situations, making maths both fun and relevant. They have been able to put these skills into practice in using a variety of different digital tools, as well as some classics, like the game ‘Battleship’.
When teaching students about the Cartesian Plane, we have been using the analogy of a library and a ladder, and likening this to the x and y axis on a coordinate plane. Before you climb the ladder (y axis), you must walk across to it (x axis). You can not walk UP a ladder if you are not AT the ladder.

As part of my Assistant Principal leadership responsibilities, I am proud to be leading two key projects this year that align with our school’s vision and the broader goals of the NSW Public Education system.
Alongside Mrs Kennedy, I am supporting the continued development of Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) at Appin PS. We’ve been working to refine our systems, language, and rewards to ensure greater clarity and consistency for both staff and students. These improvements are already beginning to shine through and can be seen later in The Wrap @ Appin in our PBL highlights section.
In addition, I am leading our Promotions Team, a broader initiative in collaboration with Mr Earnshaw and schools across our local network. This project is aligned with the NSW Plan for Public Education, and focuses on strengthening how we showcase the exceptional, values-driven education on offer at Appin PS—an education that truly reflects the belief that the best things money can’t buy are found right here in our public schools.
Through both initiatives, we are committed to ensuring that our students thrive, our staff feel empowered, and our community—and beyond—can see exactly what makes Appin PS such a special place to learn and grow.
I look forward to sharing regular updates on the progress of this project right here in The Wrap @ Appin, so our community can stay informed and involved.
In English, students have been reading the book ‘Fire’ by Jackie French which is a powerful and poetic picture book that captures the terrifying and emotional experience of a bushfire sweeping through the Australian landscape. The students of Stage 2 have been learning to using similes, metaphors and rhyme to bring the fire to life and engage the audience. Our journey throughout this unit will lead us to creating a poem about natural disasters in Australia, by using imagery, symbols and poetic devices to engage our audience and create a sense of connection.
During mathematics, Stage 2 students have been learning about directional language and landmarks in our unit of position. As part of our integrated learning, students have been exploring the significance of landmarks and how they have been traditionally used for navigation. We’ve been learning how Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples used natural features—such as rivers, mountains, and even the stars—to find their way across the vast Australian landscape. Stage 2 are learning to use directional language to interpret and locate positions on grid maps, as well as describe routes between key points. Through hands-on activities, students are also developing their understanding of chance by predicting and describing possible outcomes from various experiments.
Students are enjoying the hands-on experiences involved in mapping and understanding position. Mulga have enjoyed exploring the school and the natural landmarks. The students have been enjoying providing their peers with directions to a significant place within the school. Where will we end up? The students of Hall having been enjoying their experience to learn about the natural disaster of fires, while creating vibrant artworks.
As part of our mapping and position learning, students have been using ‘Bee Bots’ and ‘Spheros’ to practise giving and following directional instructions. These hands-on tools help students apply their understanding of movement and navigation in a fun and interactive way. Mulga students are currently designing mazes using Minecraft Education, where they are applying their creative and critical thinking skills. Each student is challenged to build a unique maze that their peers will navigate using directional clues, combining digital technology with real-world problem-solving.

As an Assistant Principal, part of my leadership focus this year is on strengthening community engagement at Appin Public School. I am currently working alongside Mrs Gemma Lewis to co-design a more inclusive and welcoming community hub—a space where parents and carers feel comfortable, heard, and connected.
Our long-term goal is to create an area where families can drop in for a coffee, ask questions, share stories, and interact meaningfully with our school. We're hoping to launch a “Conversation Café”—an informal meet-up space that will run for an hour during both drop-off and pick-up times, creating opportunities for open dialogue and stronger partnerships.
We're still in the early planning phase, but we’re excited by the potential this has to further enrich our school culture. Through our school newsletter, The Wrap @ Appin, I’ll be sharing updates as the project progresses—we’d love your feedback and involvement as we move forward.
Technology and Innovation
There’s been a buzz in the world of technology across our school! We are proud to now offer 1:1 devices for all Stage 3 students and are well on our way to achieving the same for Stage 2. Every classroom at Appin Public School is equipped with iPads or laptops, allowing students to engage in future-focused learning every day. From researching in science, designing eye-catching posters on Canva, to coding and creating in Minecraft Education — our students are using digital tools to deepen their learning in meaningful ways.
We’re also lucky to have the Spheros available in our school library, providing opportunities for all classes to explore coding in an engaging and hands-on way. Recently, our Year 1 Smart class had a fantastic time using the Spheros to build their coding skills through interactive challenges.
We look forward to continuing to grow and innovate with technology at Appin!

Problem Solving Together
In mathematics year 1 students are beginning to explore the concept of measurement by engaging with real-life contexts. Through hands-on activities, they learn to compare, order, and describe objects using terms like longer, shorter, heavier, and lighter. This early exposure helps them connect mathematical language to everyday experiences, building a strong foundation for understanding how measurement is used in the world around them.
In English students are learning to understand the context of stories by exploring who, what, where, and when events happen. Through guided reading and storytelling, they begin to recognise how setting, characters, and events work together to create meaning. This helps them deepen their comprehension and make connections between stories and their own experiences.
Students are enjoying using informal units like blocks, hand spans, and paper clips to measure and compare lengths. Through fun, hands-on activities, they’re developing important skills in estimation, comparison, and mathematical thinking, all while building their understanding of how measurement works in everyday life.
Students are having a great time participating in the Gymtastics program! They’re building strength, coordination, and confidence through fun and engaging physical activities, all while developing important movement skills in a supportive and energetic environment.

As part of my Assistant Principal leadership role, I am focusing on improving attendance at Appin Public School—an area that aligns with the Premier’s Priority and our shared belief that every day of learning matters.
In collaboration with Mr Henesey, I work closely with the Home School Liaison Officer (HSLO), meeting fortnightly to track attendance data, monitor patterns of absence, and connect with families who may need support in maintaining regular attendance. This proactive approach helps us identify concerns early and work together with families to keep every student in school, on time, and ready to learn.
We are currently revamping our attendance procedures to ensure full alignment with the Department of Education guidelines. Our goal is to have clear, consistent, and supportive processes that are transparent for both staff and families.
Each fortnight, I will share information and updates in the Attendance section of The Wrap @ Appin, including helpful reminders, strategies, and ways we’re supporting students to be at school every day.
In our mathematics program, students are exploring numbers and their relationships. They will learn to recognise, compare and order numbers, which helps build a strong foundation for all future mathematics skills. We encourage students to practice counting in different ways, such as counting objects around the house or counting steps as they walk. Our co-teaching time has a focus on additive strategies, which are techniques used to solve addition and subtraction problems.
This week in McRae, Mr. McCloskey changed a mathematics game of ‘Incy Wincy Spider’ to move from a regular game board to a life size version. The children were very enthusiastic and loved using teddies in place of counter. Using the rhyme 'Incy Wincy Spider' to guide the mathematics game, students selected either the Sun or the Rain to role play and roll a dice to move Incy Wincy forward. If they got to the end of the board, they win that round and Incy Wincy goes back into the middle. This is just one way of how teachers constantly create exciting and engaging learning experiences for students!
This term our creative arts focus is on music where students are participating in learning that develops musical skills, including rhythm, pitch recognition, and instrumentation. We use Amplify’s music curriculum to provide interactive and engaging lessons that cater to diverse learning styles. Students participate in lessons that include listening activities, singing, and playing instruments. All students will also create pieces of art work that reflect their understanding of books shared.

As part of my Assistant Principal leadership role this year, my focus is on strengthening early intervention and improving transition practices across the early years at Appin PS.
I am currently working alongside local preschools and day care centres to establish strong, collaborative pathways that allow us to identify and respond to student needs early. This includes ensuring students receive the right support before they start school and that families feel confident and informed throughout the transition process.
In addition, I support and manage our Integration Funded students, working closely with our support teachers to develop and maintain personalised Learning Portfolios. These portfolios allow us to monitor progress, tailor support, and ensure a shared understanding of how best to meet the individual needs of each student.
This work is grounded in our commitment to inclusive, responsive and high-quality education—ensuring every child gets the best possible start to their school journey. I will also be contributing to our Feel Good Focus—a space in The Wrap where we share tips, reflections and wellbeing wins to help us all thrive together
I look forward to using this space in The Wrap @ Appin to share how our work is shaping positive change and strengthening outcomes for our students and families

To acknowledge National Sorry Day and Reconciliation Week, our students took part in a range of meaningful activities. Throughout the week, classes watched educational videos and participated in lessons that deepened their understanding of the Stolen Generations and the importance of reconciliation. On Wear It Yellow Day, the whole school proudly wore yellow to raise funds for Children's Ground, supporting First Nations-led education and change. Over the last fortnight, our cultural group had the opportunity to participate in an incursion about Aboriginal tools and has continued to deepen their knowledge through stories shared in our yarning circle and connected cultural activities
Wear It Yellow Day
Thank you for your support in our Wear It Yellow Day that was held on 27th May, 2025. It was lovely to see lots of students and teachers wearing yellow. An amount of $270.00 was raised and will be donated to Children's Ground - a First Nations not-for-profit organisation.
Multicultural Public Speaking Competition
Congratulations to all of our students who proudly represented our school at the Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition! Each speaker demonstrated confidence, creativity, and a strong voice when sharing their speeches. A special congratulations and best of luck to Isabella Goldsbrough, Eden MacGee, Jessica Brennan, and Oliver Closter, who will be progressing to the Local Final at Elderslie Public School in Week 7.
Last week, our debating teams – the Koalas and the Waratahs – went head-to-head with Woodland Road in two exciting debates. The Koalas argued passionately that all students should have to complete homework, while the Waratahs put forward the case for every classroom to have a pet cat or dog. Although both teams narrowly lost their debates, they showed incredible teamwork, resilience, and strong speaking skills. We’re proud of their efforts and look forward to seeing them in action again this week as they prepare for their next debate. Good luck, teams!
Mulga
Powerful Persuasive Writing processes
This term, Mulga students have been diving deep into persuasive writing techniques. We've been exploring the power of high modality words and emotive language to influence our audience and strengthen our arguments. Our focus topic has been Ned Kelly: Villain or Hero?, and to support our understanding, we read Ned Kelly and the Green Sash. This sparked thoughtful discussions about the differences between objective and subjective language—learning that objective writing focuses on facts, while subjective writing introduces personal opinions.
Magical Mathematics
In Mathematics, we’ve been developing our skills in multiplication and division by applying a variety of strategies to solve problems and justify our reasoning. Daily times table practice is helping us improve our recall and build confidence in our number fluency.
Connecting to Culture, Home and Family
Last week, we acknowledged National Reconciliation Week with meaningful learning and reflection. As part of our celebration, our class performed My Island Home by Christine Anu—a powerful song that represents the importance of family and the places we call home.
To deepen our understanding of connection to Country, home, and community, we explored the symbols commonly used in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artworks. After learning about the meaning behind these symbols, students created their own artworks to represent the people in their lives who make them feel safe, loved, and at home.
This creative process gave students a chance to reflect on their personal connections and to celebrate the important role family and community play in their lives. It was a thoughtful and moving way to honour the themes of Reconciliation Week.
Creating, Coding and Critical thinking
We have been exploring the world of Minecraft Education, where we've begun recreating our school environment. This exciting project encourages teamwork, creativity, and problem-solving as we work collaboratively to design realistic and detailed models of our school grounds.
PDHPE – Athletics Super Skills
As we prepare for the upcoming Athletics Carnival, our class has been developing essential skills for track and field events. We've been focusing on relay and running techniques, using hurdles and agility ladders to improve our speed and coordination. In the coming weeks, we’ll continue building our abilities in shot put, discus, long jump, and high jump.
Mulga is looking forward to continuing a term full of learning, collaboration, and growing confidence!
