Week 3-5, Term 2
Dear Appin Public School families,
It has certainly been a busy and exciting term, with so many wonderful opportunities already taking place across our school. One of the things I value most about our community is the way our staff, students and families work together to create such positive experiences for our children. Whether it is through volunteering, supporting programs, celebrating student achievement or simply being involved in school life, the strength of our community continues to shine through each and every week.
P&C Mother’s Day Stall:
A huge thank you to our incredible P&C and all of the parent volunteers who supported this year’s Mother’s Day Stall. Events such as these simply could not happen without the generosity of those who give up their time to help prepare, organise and support our students.
It was wonderful to see the excitement on students’ faces as they carefully selected gifts for the special people in their lives. These moments help create lasting memories for our children and strengthen the sense of connection within our school community. Thank you again to everyone who volunteered their time and support — we truly could not do it without you.
Parent Voice:
Thank you to those parents and carers who provided feedback following the Camden Show excursion in term 1. Feedback from our community is valued and supports ongoing reflection and improvement. The school continues to respect and value our partnership with parents and carers in our aim to ensure rich, positive and engaging learning experiences for our students.
As a result of this parent and carer feedback, the school will strengthen our excursion planning with:
· Improved communication processes and expectations for parent volunteers on excursions
· Revised teacher supervision structures will be implemented during large scale excursions to further support student visibility and monitoring
Again, I would like to thank those parents who provided their feedback.
Breakfast Club:
This week also saw the beginning of our Breakfast Club Program. We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we continue to fine tune routines and processes during the early stages of implementation.
Breakfast Club is another fantastic example of the strong partnership between our school and P&C, working together to support the wellbeing and success of our students. A special thank you to our volunteers who have already jumped in to help make the mornings run smoothly. Your support is greatly appreciated and makes a real difference to our students.
Celebrating Leadership and Aspiring Leaders:
I am incredibly proud to share that Mr McClosky has officially achieved his Highly Accomplished Teacher accreditation (HALT) This is a significant professional achievement that recognises outstanding teaching practice, leadership and impact on student learning across the school community.
Highly Accomplished Teacher accreditation is a rigorous process through NESA that acknowledges teachers who consistently demonstrate exemplary classroom practice and support the growth of colleagues. We are extremely proud of Mr McClosky and this well deserved achievement.
This week also provided another exciting opportunity for our staff, with Mr Earnshaw, Mrs Paxton, Mrs Earnshaw, Mr Hennessy and myself participating in a focus group centered around Highly Accomplished accreditation and the avenues of achieving this. The HALT program supports leadership development, collaborative practice and professional growth across schools.
It is incredibly exciting to see so many aspiring leaders within our school community who are passionate about continuous improvement, collaboration and making a positive difference for our students. Appin Public School is fortunate to have such a dedicated and future focused staff team.
High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE):
Congratulations to our Sphero team working alongside Mrs Thomson, who recently placed in the Top 20 in the world against more than 400 schools within their category. This is an outstanding achievement and one our entire school community should be incredibly proud of.
Their success reflects our ongoing commitment to extending students within STEM and providing opportunities for students to apply creativity, critical thinking and problem solving skills in authentic and engaging ways.
Our Maths Olympiad teams have also commenced for the year, with students already enthusiastically engaging in rich mathematical thinking and collaborative problem solving challenges.
Within the creative domain, a number of exciting programs are currently underway involving our performers and musicians, providing students with opportunities to develop confidence, creativity and talent.
In the physical domain, students from our younger years who have been teacher identified have now begun a five week Movement Development Program with Mr Earnshaw. It has been wonderful to see students building confidence, coordination and fundamental movement skills through this targeted support program.
We are incredibly proud of the wide range of opportunities available for our students across academic, creative, social emotional and physical domains.
Aboriginal Education:
As part of our ongoing commitment to Aboriginal Education, we are currently in the process of establishing a Junior AECG at Appin Public School in collaboration with the Campbelltown AECG.
This initiative will provide opportunities for student voice, leadership and cultural connection, while strengthening understanding and partnership within our school community. We are excited about the opportunities this will create for our students and look forward to continuing this important work together.
Younger Years Focus:
As this edition of the newsletter focuses on our K–2 learners, we are excited to share some of the wonderful learning, growth and experiences taking place across our younger years classrooms. Throughout this newsletter you will see the joy, curiosity and enthusiasm our students bring to school each day, and we look forward to celebrating their learning with you.
Thank you, as always, for your ongoing support, partnership and contribution to our wonderful school community.
Have a wonderful restful weekend.

Kindergarten Emu
1/2 Quokka has made a terrific start to Term 2!
It has been so impressive to see the hard work end effort of our students come through in their growth and progress. Our clever quokkas are coming to school each day with a willingness to learn, work and have fun together, creating a positive and engaging classroom environment.
In English this term, our focus is on imaginative texts. We have been exploring the author Aaron Blabey and have been reading Pig the Pug, Pig the Rebel and Bad Guys. We have been learning all about character, internal and external traits to be able to successfully create our own characters to shape the reader’s impressions and influence the way a story is understood. Additionally, students have been creatively writing prepositions and acting out directions they have written, which has been a fun and interactive way to deepen their understanding of spatial language and instructions. We will continue learning new sounds in Phonics, practising fluency pairs, and expanding our vocabulary by exploring and learning new words each week.

We are working on how to troubleshoot and problem solve, and are really learning that sometimes technology does not always work and can require lots of patience!
Finally, in PDHPE, students will continue to develop their fundamental movement skills, while also building interpersonal skills to support positive interactions and cooperation with others. We also enjoyed participating in the K/1 Cross Country, and for the first time, our Year 2’s were able to run at the 3-6 Cross Country carnival earlier this term.
We have had a great term so far, and look forward to more fun and learning!
Mrs Keir & Mrs Hawkins
Term 2 has already been jam-packed with exciting school events and lots of incredible learning occurring in our classroom.
The start of Term 2 was focused on Glider students refining their daily classroom routines. One of these, is our paired fluency routine which allows students to read to a partner of similar or different reading ability. Students observe what a good reader should sound like through an explicit lesson on reading fluency and have a weekly focus around the acronym EARS (Expression - reading like a storyteller, Accuracy - reading at a smooth talking pace, Rhythm - paying attention to punctuation and phrasing, Smoothness - fixing up mistakes). Students are now learning to give constructive feedback to their partner and this routine ensures students are reading to a partner every day to continue to develop their reading fluency.
We have jumped into the world of character building with our first unit of the term focusing around how authors create memorable characters. There were belly laughs (from all, including me!) as we read through Pig the Pug, Pig the Rebel and The Bad Guys. Students had a great time testing their abilities in creating their very own Pig the Pug characters and describing them using noun groups, adjectives and even experimenting with dialogue. Our next unit is around Narratives (stories).
Our whole school focus on vocabulary has allowed students to learn about and use Tier 2 and 3 vocabulary words in their writing. As a teacher, it is really exciting to see this translate into their written work and being used in the correct context!
Archie H: Trevor was astonished to see Pig's bad behaviour.
Harlow: Mrs Trunchbull was bellowing at the students in the playground.
Blayke: He was a criminal mastermind and rebellious too.
Noah: Pig has red, bulging eyes.
Sofia: "Hurry up and give me the button!" cried Henry.
In Mathematics, we have been learning to count large collections effectively and have been learning a range of games to improve our number skills. Students have been testing their place value knowledge through a range of activities such as Place Value Wars and Place Value Climb. We have also been learning about equivalence and balancing number sentences, with students exploring how both sides of an equation must have the same value, for example 22 + 11 = 30 + 3. Glider students have loved opportunities to test their addition and subtraction skills on Sunset Maths as a part of the schools subscription to Essential Assessment. This is a valuable learning tool as our students learn how to use the iPads to log on, sign in using their own passwords and explore digital technology in a fun and meaningful way.
1/2 Bilby has made a terrific start to Term 2! It has been wonderful to see the enormous growth and progress the students have made since the beginning of the year. The students are coming to school each day with enthusiasm, confidence, and a genuine eagerness to learn, creating a positive and engaging classroom environment.
In English this term, our focus is on imaginative texts. We have been exploring the Pig the Pug series, along with other engaging stories by author Aaron Blabey. These fun and entertaining texts have inspired rich class discussions about characters, with students identifying both their external traits and inner qualities. Through these learning experiences, students are developing their understanding of how an author’s description of a character can shape the reader’s impressions and influence the way a story is understood. I can’t wait to see the stories they create this term. We will continue learning new sounds in Phonics, practising fluency pairs, and expanding our vocabulary by exploring and learning new words each week.
In Mathematics, we will build on our skills related to whole numbers, grouping numbers, equivalence, and solving worded problems. Additionally, the students will begin exploring maps and positional pathways, developing their spatial awareness.
In Creative and Performing Arts, students will continue their learning in dance, using shapes and movements to communicate ideas. In music, they will develop their playing skills through the use of environmental sounds, instruments, and technology.
Our Science lessons will focus on the design process, where students will define user needs and create solutions. In HSIE, students are learning how people use stories, images, objects, and sites to understand the ancient past.
Finally, in PDHPE, students will continue to develop their fundamental movement skills, while also building interpersonal skills to support positive interactions and cooperation with others. We also enjoyed participating in the K/1 Cross Country and for the first time our Year 2’s were able to run at the 3-6 Cross Country carnival earlier this term.
This term we welcome Holly Rowley, a UOW Practicum student who will be teaching in the Bilby classroom. In week 8, Bilbies will be performing at the K-2 assembly. We are looking forward to showcasing our talents with our families. I am looking forward to another amazing and productive term with 1/2 Bilby class.
The legendary Lorikeets have settled beautifully into Term 2 and continue to impress me each and every day with their enthusiasm, confidence, and positivity. It has been fantastic to see the growth students have already made this year, both academically and socially, as they continue to develop into capable and independent learners.
In English, students are exploring imaginative texts through a range of engaging stories, including the hilarious Pig the Pug series and The Bad Guys series by Aaron Blabey. These texts have sparked thoughtful discussions about characters, with students identifying character traits, emotions, and behaviours, as well as designing their own Pig characters. Through these activities, students are learning how authors use descriptions and actions to shape a reader’s understanding of a story. We are looking forward to seeing students apply these ideas in their own creative writing throughout the term. Alongside this, students are continuing to strengthen their phonics knowledge, reading fluency, and vocabulary skills through weekly VCOP activities, word of the week, and paired reading fluency tasks.
In Mathematics, students are developing their understanding of whole numbers, grouping and partitioning numbers, equivalence, and problem-solving strategies. They will also begin investigating maps, directions, and positional language as they build their spatial awareness skills.
In Creative and Performing Arts, students are continuing to explore movement and expression through dance, using different shapes and actions to communicate ideas. In music lessons, they are experimenting with environmental sounds, instruments, and technology to build their confidence and performance skills.
Science this term focuses on the design process, with students identifying needs and designing possible solutions to problems. In HSIE, students are learning about the ancient past and examining how stories, artefacts, images, and significant sites help us understand life long ago.
In PDHPE, students are continuing to practise and refine their fundamental movement skills while also developing teamwork, cooperation, and positive relationship skills. Earlier this term, students enthusiastically participated in the K–1 Cross Country event, and our Year 2 students proudly represented the class in the 3–6 Cross Country carnival for the first time. All of the lorikeets gave a phenomenal effort and made myself, and their parents and carers proud. Keep up the good work, Lorikeets!

Toys at School
At Appin Public School, we are committed to creating a safe, calm and positive learning environment where all students can thrive. As part of our Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) approach, we encourage students to come to school ready to learn and engage positively with others.
Recently, we have noticed an increase in toys and personal items being brought to school. While we understand that students may enjoy sharing special items with their friends, toys in the classroom and playground can sometimes become a distraction to learning, lead to disagreements between students, or cause unsafe play behaviours. Unfortunately, personal items can also become lost, damaged or broken, which can be upsetting for children.
To support student learning and wellbeing, we kindly ask families to encourage children to leave toys and valuable personal items at home unless they have been specifically requested by their teacher for a learning activity or special event. By doing this, we can help students stay focused on their learning, build positive relationships and ensure school remains an inclusive and engaging environment for everyone.
We appreciate your ongoing support in helping us maintain a positive learning environment for all students.
Attendance
Attendance Matters – A Great Start to the Term
We are extremely proud of the strong attendance demonstrated across the school. Regular attendance plays a vital role in student learning, wellbeing, and success, and it is wonderful to see so many students arriving at school each day ready to learn and engage. This reflects the strong partnership between our school and families, who continue to support the importance of consistent attendance. We thank our students and community for their ongoing commitment and encourage everyone to continue striving for excellent attendance throughout the year.
Another huge congratulations to Possum Class, who have recorded the best attendance this term so far, with a whopping 98.4%! We are incredibly proud of your commitment and effort.
From the Office
Updating School
It is very important that we have up to date and correct contact details for our students. If you have a new home address, mobile phone number or email address, please contact our school office to update these details as soon as possible.
Unexplained Absences
Please remember that the NSW Education Act requires that all student absences must be explained within 7 days of the first day of them being away from school. Please contact us promptly whenever your child is absent and let us know the reason for them being away.
A text message will be sent home each day the student has an unexplained absence. Parents have 7 days to reply on the parent portal or contact the school, otherwise unexplained absences become unjustified.
If you have any questions or if you need support with your child’s attendance, please contact the school on 46 311 220.
Safe Eating Reminder
This is a gentle reminder not to pack any food for your child at school that contains nuts, for example peanut butter or nutella sandwiches, dried fruit and nut mixes or packaged bars containing nuts. Whilst our school does not ban these foods, we strongly encourage parents to consider the safety of all students here at our school. We have a number of students who will have an anaphylactic response to nuts that will require the fast use of an Epipen to prevent a potentially fatal reaction. We also strongly encourage parents against packing egg sandwiches or hard boiled eggs for the same reason. We thank you for your ongoing support in this.
Just a reminder that there is absolutely no parking or pedestrian access through our staff car park at any time. If dropping off or picking up from OOSH, please use the OOSH gate provided. Thank you.
Canteen Online Ordering
Mel's Lunchbox provides lunch orders with Spriggy Schools Online Ordering App. If you have any questions, or suggestions, please contact Mel on Mb: 0456 815160.
Lost Property
Please clearly label your child’s clothing or items they bring to school and replace these names when they wear off. Please also ask at the front office for any valuable lost items such as watches, glasses, jewellery etc. At the end of the term, we will donate any unclaimed items to the Uniform Shop or to a charity.
Cooler Weather
With the weather getting cooler, please be sure to send a jacket with your child. PLEASE label all your child's belongings including jackets, jumpers, hats, and coats. Call in to the front office to check if your child's belongings are in the lost and found tub. If they are labelled, we can return items to their rightful owner. Thank you
