As Semester 1 comes to a close, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to our Student Representative Council (SRC) members for their outstanding leadership and commitment to our school community.

Throughout the semester, our SRC students have demonstrated what it means to be respectful, responsible and active leaders. They have worked hard to ensure that student voices are heard and valued, introducing suggestion boxes around the school, conducting a whole-school wellbeing survey, and meeting with Mrs Collins to share feedback and ideas on behalf of their peers.

The SRC has also helped to bring about positive changes within our school by listening to student opinions, discussing ways to improve our school environment, and working collaboratively to turn ideas into action. Their enthusiasm, maturity and willingness to represent others have made a genuine difference.

We are incredibly proud of everything our Semester 1 SRC members have achieved and thank them for the time, effort and leadership they have shown. Your contributions have helped make our school an even better place for everyone.

As we welcome a new group of SRC representatives in Semester 2, we know they will have big shoes to fill. We look forward to seeing our incoming leaders continue the fantastic work of this semester's team.

Term 2 Attendance Update 

Our school currently has 341 students enrolled and continues to prioritise regular attendance as a key factor in student success.

Our overall attendance rate is 93.2%, which is well above both the NSW DoE state average (88.7%) and our network average (88.9%), and also exceeds the SSSG average (91.3%).

We are particularly proud that 77.7% of our students attend school 90% or more of the time. This is significantly higher than the state average (67.3%), network average (68.4%), and SSSG average (73.8%), demonstrating our strong culture of attendance and engagement.

Additionally, we have achieved 100% attendance data completeness, ensuring our attendance records are accurate, up to date, and meet all Department of Education requirements.

Thank you to our students, families, and staff for working together to support regular attendance. Every day at school provides valuable learning opportunities, strengthens friendships, and helps students achieve their personal best.

As we reach the end of another busy and successful term, I would like to thank our students, families, and staff for their ongoing support and commitment to our school community. I hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved break, taking the opportunity to relax, recharge, and spend quality time with family and friends.

The holiday period is a wonderful chance for children to rest while continuing to learn through everyday experiences such as reading, playing outdoors, exploring new places, and spending time together as a family. This week, Appin Public School proudly celebrated NAIDOC Week, a time to recognise and celebrate the rich histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

We began the week with a special whole-school assembly that brought our community together in celebration. During the assembly, we proudly unveiled our new sport house flags, honouring four inspiring First Nations Australians - Adam Goodes, Jessica Mauboy, Eddie Mabo and Cathy Freeman. We were also privileged to enjoy a range of outstanding cultural performances from students representing Ambarvale High School, Rosemeadow Public School, Curran Public School and Guise Public School. We sincerely thank all of our visiting schools for sharing their talents, culture and knowledge with our students.

Throughout the week, students participated in a variety of learning rotations, providing opportunities to engage with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and perspectives. These hands-on learning experiences encouraged students to deepen their understanding, celebrate the world's oldest continuing cultures and reflect on the importance of respect, connection and reconciliation.

Our 3-6 Cultural Group also proudly represented Appin Public School at the Thomas Acres Public School NAIDOC Week Assembly. Students performed a cultural dance inspired by native animals found in our local area, showcasing their pride in culture, teamwork and dedication. We are incredibly proud of the way our students represented our school and shared their learning with the wider community.

It was a fantastic week of learning, celebration and connection, and we thank everyone who contributed to making our NAIDOC Week celebrations such a memorable and meaningful experience.

Term 2 has been another exciting and productive term for High Potential and Gifted Education (HPGE) at Appin Public School, with students across a range of domains provided with opportunities to extend their talents, pursue their passions and showcase their abilities. 

Maths Enrichment 

Our Mathematics programs have also continued to flourish this term. Our Inspire Mathematics enrichment groups are now underway across years 3-6 with Ms Martin, providing students with opportunities to extend their mathematical thinking through rich, open-ended problem-solving experiences. We also launched the APSMO Maths Olympiad, with selected Stage 2 and 3 students participating in the first of four challenging competitions. The Olympiad encourages students to think creatively, apply sophisticated mathematical strategies and persevere through complex problems, and we look forward to following their progress throughout the remainder of the year. We are looking forward to extending mathematics opportunities in the early years across semester 2.  

Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition 

Congratulations to all Stage 2 and Stage 3 students who participated in this year's Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Competition. Students should be commended for the effort, confidence, and preparation they demonstrated when researching, writing, and presenting their speeches. 

A special congratulations to Zahli, who represented our school at the Local Final held at Picton Public School. Zahli delivered an outstanding speech and was awarded Highly Commended for her efforts. This is a wonderful achievement, and we are incredibly proud of the way she represented our school. 

Debating 

Congratulations to our Appin Waratahs and Appin Koalas debating teams on their fantastic efforts throughout Term 2. Our students have represented Appin Public School with confidence, teamwork, and respectful sportsmanship in debates against St Helens Park Public School, Douglas Park Public School, and Picton Public School. We are proud of the commitment and enthusiasm shown by all team members and wish both teams the very best in their final debate of against Woodland Road Public School in Term 3! 

Visual Art Opportunities 

Our Creative Arts students have been busy developing their skills and preparing for several exciting opportunities. Stage 2 students have been enjoying Lunchtime Art Club, where they have been developing their drawing and blending techniques while exploring a range of artistic styles and media. It has been wonderful to see their creativity, persistence and confidence continue to grow. 

This term also saw the culmination of our whole-school Operation Art selection process. Every class nominated two original artworks, which were proudly displayed in our library for students and staff to view before voting for their favourites. Congratulations to our school finalists, whose creativity and artistic talent were truly outstanding. We are thrilled to announce our 2026 Operation Art representatives: Primary- Imogen M and Holly C and Infants-Blayke F and Eleanor E. We wish them every success as their artworks progress to the next stage of the competition. 

Dance 

Our Senior Dance Group recently attended their first rehearsal for Southern Stars, giving students the opportunity to experience rehearsing alongside performers from schools across the region. They are eagerly looking forward to performing at the WIN Entertainment Centre on 28 and 29 August. Both our Junior and Senior Dance Groups have also been working incredibly hard in preparation for the Wollondilly Performing Arts Festival, which will be held at Picton High School in Week 2 next term. Students have shown outstanding commitment, teamwork and enthusiasm during rehearsals, and we look forward to seeing them shine on stage. 

Stage 1 Guitar Program 

This term, our Stage 1 students have enthusiastically embraced the opportunity to learn the fundamentals of playing the guitar. They have developed their understanding of how to hold the instrument correctly, position their hands and fingers, and play a range of classic beginner riffs. As their confidence has grown, students have also been introduced to more challenging strumming patterns and basic chords. 

It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm for music extend beyond the classroom, with many students choosing to begin private guitar lessons and even inspiring their families to purchase guitars so they can continue practising at home. 

K–1 Sport Group 

Our K–1 Sport Group kicked off earlier this term, with more than 30 students involved and already showing plenty of enthusiasm, confidence and natural sporting talent. 

Throughout the sessions, Mr Earnshaw has been working with students to develop key fundamental movement skills while challenging them to extend themselves in fun and engaging ways. So far, students have focused on sprinting technique, horizontal and vertical jumping, evasion skills such as swerving and sidestepping, as well as underarm and overarm throwing. 

Each session includes a warm-up, explicit skill development and a fun game that allows students to practise the focus skill in an active and purposeful way. Feedback from students has been extremely positive, with many sharing how much they have enjoyed the group and how excited they are to continue developing their sporting skills. 

Mr Earnshaw has been very impressed with the effort, energy and sportsmanship shown by the students so far and is looking forward to continuing the K–1 Sport Group in Term 3.

Starting Time:  2:20pm – 2:50pm (Students will return to class to be dismissed by their teacher at 3:00pm)

Where:  On pathways around our school playground and classrooms

Wear:  Sports uniform, enclosed shoes and your school hat, is essential!

Bring:   Water to drink  (Your Sponsor Card for stamping will be given out by your teacher on the day of the Walkathon)  Parents are warmly welcomed to attend and walk laps with their children from 2:20pm.

AFTER THE WALKATHON 

When you collect your money from your sponsors the preferred option is to use the School Bytes App to forward your funds to school. 

Simply go to the School Bytes App, go to Payments, select Add Other Item, select General from the Category drop down, choose Walkathon from the drop-down list and enter the amount of your donation.  This way a receipt is promptly emailed to you for your records.
