Social media is fun and an easy way to stay connected with others, but it comes with risks. Some of these include:
Spending too much time online and disconnecting with the real world
Becoming a victim of cyberbullying
Ruining your online reputation
Having personal information exposed online
Becoming a victim of online scams
Reduced self-esteem
This is why cyber safety is so important. Follow the tips below to protect yourself online:
Don't broadcast your personal details (e.g. your home address, mobile phone number, date of birth)
Always check location services and keep them off
Don't share your passwords with anyone
Log out when using public computers
Recogonise fake accounts and use the block feature
Do not post or send pictures you wouldn't want everyone to see
Kids Helpline has some great resources to support you if you are experiencing cyberbullying. Their website includes videos and tips, and a section where you can report the cyberbullying.
