Texture changes in music
Introduction
Understanding technical terms
Some common terms for describing texture are:
monophonic (one single melody or layer of sound)
homophonic (melody plus simple chords)
polyphonic (2 or more interesting parts/melodies at once).
Activity 3
Task 1
Watch the video about 'Texture changes in music' (2:47)

Task 2
Ask groups of students to:
look up and paraphrase the etymology of each word (monophonic, homophonic and polyphonic)
or
discuss which texture might be represented by each picture below. Students then draw their own visual representation of the combination of sound layers in monophonic, homophonic and polyphonic music.
Task 3
Use the Google slides template to categorise the images from Task 2 into these textures:
monophonic
homophonic
polyphonic.
Share your completed slide with a friend:
Which images did you categorise the same way?
Which images did you place in different categories?
Share with each other the criteria you used to categorise the images.
