Topographic Map of Katandra Reserve

Part 1_Orientating a map.pdf

What is the contour interval for this map?

How high above sea level is St Johns Lookout?

What is the height above sea level at Seymour Pond?

Use the 'Reading a Topographic Map' resource to the right to look at the shape of a gully. How many gullies can you see between St Johns Lookout and Seymour Pond.

Note: This map is downloadable in the teachers pack (tab top right of page) or can be reproduced in six maps online mapping tool.

2. What is the climate like at Katandra?

Rainfall

Study the graph and consider the rainfall for our area on the Central Coast.

1. Rainforests need 1200mm of rain each year. Looking at the graph, did we get enough rain to keep the forests on the Central Coast healthy?

2. What do you think would happen to our rainforest’s flora and fauna if the areas received less than 800mm a year?

3. Which month had the maximum amount of rainfall? Approximately how much?

4. Which month had the minimum amount of rainfall? Approximately how much?

5. Why do you think February, March and April had the highest amount of rainfall?

6. The Mean Average of rainfall is 1328.5mm for the past 96 years. Discuss what this means for our rainforests on the Central Coast.

Temperature

Study the graph and consider the temperature for our area on the Central Coast.

1.   What time was the temperature taken?

2.   Explain why you think it was taken at this time of day?

3.   Which month had the maximum temperature? Approximately how much?

4.   Which month had the minimum temperature? Approximately how much?

5. What is the difference in temperature between the highest temperature recorded and the lowest temperature recorded?

6.  What do you think would happen to our rainforests if the mean temperature for each month was above 23 degrees?

7.   How could Climate Change affect Katandra Rainforest?

Humidity

Study the graph and consider the humidity for our area on the Central Coast.

1.   Explain what relative humidity is?

2.   What do we measure it in?

3.  What do you think would happen to our rainforest’s flora and fauna if the relative humidity was on average between 20 – 40 percent?

4.  Which month had the maximum relative humidity percentage? Approximately how much?

5. Which month had the minimum relative humidity percentage? Approximately how much?

6.  Why do you think July, August September and October had the lowest percent in relative humidity?
