The String Program is available to all students from Kindergarten through to Year 6. Students in the string program who wish to learn the Violin, Viola, Cello or Double Bass are invited to join these ensembles. The emphasis of these ensembles is to learn good instrumental technique, how to read music and ensemble and performance  skills. All new students to the string ensemble join the Beginner Strings program. This program runs during school time on Fridays and students learn the basics of how to play an instrument. Once students complete Beginner Strings (or have already started learning an instrument outside school) they can join the Junior Strings Ensemble. As students become more confident on their instrument students can audition to join the Senior Strings Ensemble, Chamber Strings Ensemble or Symphony Orchestra. Each year students in the Chamber Strings Ensemble perform at the Sydney Opera House as part of the Festival of Instrumental Music. Students in years 4 - 6 have the added benefits of attending the combined schools music camp and ALL students can be part of  Symphonia Jubilate.

Students in the strings program attend weekly rehearsals and attend a weekly private lesson and of course, practice at home. String instruments require a hands-on approach from parents to oversee practise at home and ensure they are communicating with the teacher about what the students are practising each week. Much like learning to read, parents play an active role in their child’s learning at home.
