Something Fishy

Through participation in the Passion Project - Something Fishy

Students participated in a range of hands on fishing skills such as casting, rigging, tying knots and making lures. Through participation they develop new skills and knowledge about fishing and a greater understanding and appreciation for our marine environment. They have learned about NSW recreational fishing rules and regulations, and the importance of sustainable fishing industry.

This Yellow Fin Bream is my target for this month. I have caught many bream in the past, but only a few on lures. Any Bream over 40 cm in length is a very good fish.

My current goal is to catch a 40 cm plus Bream, on a lure this month, Dec 2020.

The legal length in NSW, for the Yellow Fin Bream is 25 cm, and there is a bag limit of 10.

The biggest Bream I have ever caught was 46 cm in length, that was in the winter of 2003 at Red Rock, NSW.

I don't have a photo of that Bream. .

I do have a photo of a nice Bream, one 43 cm, I caught this year fishing the the rocks at Merewether, May, 2020.

This guy fell for a well presented bait - pink nipper. Fishing with a 12lb nylon line and leader with a very small sinker. I was fishing the wash in close to the rock shelf.

When fishing the rocks, it is always good to have a plan of escape, where and how you will get out in the event you do get washed in. Also have a good look at the rock you will be fishing off, if it's wet and slippery be aware of the danger. Check the surf and observe how much water is washing over the rock. Things to consider is the tide coming in or going out and is the swell increasing or changing direction. It is good to go fishing with someone else, preferably someone with experience.

I have a lure much like a pink nipper, I intend to give it a real crack this Christmas, fishing the shallows in Lake Macquarie.

The Rebel Crawdad below is similar to the one I have had success with in Lake Macquarie.

Pink in colour to almost transparent, with a bigger bib to enable spinning to a depth of about 4 feet - 6 feet.

The one I most use, the Teeny Wee is about half the size as the one illustrated below and weighs only 8 grams.

Very light spinning gear is required to fish with this lure due to its light weight.

This guy is a legend and Lake Mac is the Hotspot for fishing if you are an estuary Fisho .

This month December 2020, Flaties are now on the chew. Use Pumpkin seed coloured minnows or grubs on the sand-flats and you should clean up.

Don't forget if you have caught a feed, let the bigger ones go. They will be rowed up. The bigger ones are nearly always females ready to lay their eggs in summer.

NSW DPI bag limit is 10 Flat Head, minimum size 36 cm with no more than two over 70 cm.

This is my go to website for all the information I need to plan fishing trips.

It provides everything from weather forecasts , wind, air pressure, tides, water temperature, ocean swell Information, lunar phases and much more.

If you are serious about catching fish you will find this site very useful.

Mum and dad will need a fishing licence, but if you are under 16 years of age, your OK to fish without a licence.
