This week students will explore and investigate how distances are measured in space.
Students:
Learning Intentions:
To know how distance is measured in space.
To understand that distance is measured this way due to the vast distances involved.
To be able to conduct a scientific investigation to identify the speed of light.
Success Criteria:
I can use my observation, research and investigative skills to answer questions on distance measurement, scientific models and electromagnetic radiation.
I have successfully followed the scientific procedure to investigate and calculate the speed of light.
Outcomes:
SC5-1VA Appreciates the importance of science in their lives and the role of scientific inquiry in increasing understanding of the world around them
SC5-6WS Undertakes first-hand investigations to collect valid and reliable data and information, individually and collaboratively
SC5-7WS Processes, analyses and evaluates data from first-hand investigations and secondary sources to develop evidence-based arguments and conclusions
SC5-11PW Explains how scientific understanding about energy conservation, transfers and transformations is applied in systems
SC5-12ES Describes changing ideas about the structure of the Earth and the universe to illustrate how models, theories and laws are refined over time by the scientific community
Students will understand how distance is measured in space and use their investigative skills to answer questions and complete a table.

Content:
WS7.1d Students process data and information by applying numerical procedures and mathematical concepts.
WS9c Students communicate by using appropriate units for physical quantities and symbols to express relationships, including mathematical ones.
ES1c Use appropriate scales to describe the differences in sizes of and distances between structures making up the universe.
Students will investigate the electromagnetic spectrum and explore how we measure distance in space by using light years.
