Overview

During these lessons students will conduct a number of probability experiments and describe their chances of success using words, fractions, decimals and percentages.

Students will learn to:   

• explain the difference between the terms experiment, outcomes, events and sample space

• construct sample spaces

• assign probabilities to the outcomes of events

• distinguish between equally likely outcomes and outcomes that are not equally likely.

Outcomes:

• MA4-1WM communicates and connects mathematical ideas using appropriate terminology, diagrams and symbols

• MA4-2WM applies appropriate mathematical techniques to solve problems

• MA4-3WM recognises and explains mathematical relationships using reasoning

• MA4-19SP collects, represents and interprets single sets of data, using appropriate statistical displays

• MA4-20SP analyses single sets of data using measures of location and range

• MA4-21 SP represents probabilities of simple and compound events 

Students will:   

• use chance words to describe the likelihood of an event occurring 

• order probabilities from least likely to most likely 

• recognise outcomes which are equally likely to occur.

• calculate the probability of an event occurring 

• represent probabilities as fractions, decimals and percentages 

• conduct probability experiments.
