Educating students in literacy and numeracy is a key responsibility at Picton High School as literacy and numeracy are ‘foundational skills’ that underpin the subsequent development of more complex skills. Literacy and numeracy skills also underpin workforce participation, productivity and the broader economy, and can impact on social and health outcomes. Individuals without these skills are at risk of not being able to participate in the workforce or engage fully in social and civic life.
Picton High School’s Literacy & Numeracy Leadership team is responsible for creating and monitoring the school’s comprehensive literacy and numeracy plan and goals. The team meets weekly to examine student data, discuss issues related to teaching and implementation, assess the need for staffing and materials, organize professional learning opportunities, promote communication, and monitor and adapt comprehensive plans and lesson content as needed. The Team create data-driven literacy and numeracy initiatives that have both short- and long-term goals that can be monitored and assessed. They ensure that students can clearly articulate their learning goals, specifically in literacy and numeracy, through having a clear vision of the expectations, where they are at and where they need to go next in their learning. The Team ensures that there is effective, collaborative engagement with parents and carers about their child’s literacy and numeracy development and consequently, embed systems for student data to be shared at transition stages, from year to year and between each school setting.
