"I am a girl in blue"

United Uniforms

With the end of World War II in 1945, clothing rations increased, allowing changes in styles, fabrics and silhouettes. With modernisation and the need for practicality increasing school uniforms had to be flexible and change with the times. Through all the years our school has continued to don a blue uniform, a tribute to who we are. The girls in blue.

The Inception of our School - Penshurst Central Domestic Science School/Penshurst Girls Home Science High School

In the 1950's it was customary that no presentable young lady would go out without gloves, a hat and matching accessories. As such the original uniform consisted of a light blue tunic, navy box pleated tunics reaching below the knee, ties, blazers, polished black lace up shoes accompanied with velour or straw hats and gloves. Girls were to be check for uniform by prefects each morning at the gate (Penshurst Girls Union, 2005 pg. 54)

As the students required more practicality the introduction of navy slacks as an option was introduced. This along with the blue plaid dress (Penshurst Girls Union, 2005) this also came with navy skirts as option in the uniform choice of girls much needed with Australia's warmer climate.

When Penshurst Girls High School became one of the campuses attached to Georges River College the uniform was kept blue in colour and consisted of navy slacks, shorts, plaid navy skirt, a light blue blouse and matching navy jackets/blazers.
