As was briefly described in the video above, digital citizenship can be broken down by looking at the two words to understand it’s meaning. Digital relates to using technology to communicate and citizenship means that you belong to the community or group of people you are communicating with (LearnEnglish Kids, n.d.). In real life you are a citizen in several communities, like Bexley Public School or being a citizen of Australia. In these communities there are rules that we live by, such as cars needing to stop at a red light.
When you interact online you are a citizen of the digital world and there are rules to follow which help you be a great digital citizen. It’s not surprising that the PBL expectations of being active, respectful, and safe which we use when communicating with people at school are able to be used online too.
Just like when you have fun and learn with your friends at school, being part of a digital community gives you many more opportunities to create, innovate and thrive with others (Hollandsworth et al., 2011). What an opportunity!
On the other pages on this site you can explore some ideas around being an active, respectful and safe digital citizen – ideas which will help you become a fabulous digital citizen!
